Re:E-waste: Five billion phones to be thrown away in 2022 on Saturday October 15, 2022 @07:52PM (#33219758)
Sorry, but this comment seems racist pure and simple. As if only the third world has to care about the environment. It's on all of us to make a difference, however small.
Re:E-waste: Five billion phones to be thrown away in 2022 on Saturday October 15, 2022 @07:36PM (#33219660)
It may well be, but the dismissal of it just because you could do more is even worse without action.
Re:E-waste: Five billion phones to be thrown away in 2022 on Saturday October 15, 2022 @07:23PM (#33219579)
This is true of course, but we shouldn't discard any attempt to improve the situation, just because there are bigger fish to try.
Re:E-waste: Five billion phones to be thrown away in 2022 on Saturday October 15, 2022 @07:19PM (#33219559)
To me this seems to be a case of whataboutism. Just because there are worse things to do environmentally speaking does not mean that this is not a problem.

Loads fine on my 100€ phone on Firefox, even the Lorem sample page

Good point, I had forgotten about that!

And obviously they collect data and essentially make a pinky promise they are not using it.

Apple has no stake in telemetry that you know of

> The 1880s German immigrants to the US completely missed slavery and the Nazis so its tragic for some kid of that heritage to be grouped into the generic white guilt idea if they accidentally walked into a segregated space at Berkeley, for example. Its just not nuanced enough.

What difference should it make for you? I honestly don't get this idea of inheriting guilt or being directly responsible for the actions of your forebears.

So it's possible and you reply to a person telling you about a legitimate usecase but you continue to go on about how it is totally useless?
Just a simple question. Do you believe in freedom of speech? In freedom of the press? If yes, why do you think it would be shocking if you are spied on?

You are being spied on at this moment. So what are you going to do?

Amazon's product offering is also seemingly getting worse, lots of five-star rated products which feature obviously paid reviews and are cheap copies. Other retailers feature good-quality brand names.

For technical hardware I can recommend geizhals.de over idealo.

Why would you censor the word motherfucking?
Re:Signal Adds Cryptocurrency Support on Wednesday April 07, 2021 @10:45AM (#26725686)
> Ah, fair. I think you could also argue that you have to trust Intel if you use Signal anyway.

Agreed :)

> So in a world where you end up having to trust someone, being able to continuously exercise that is important.

Also agree here. I would prefer if you could minimize the number of actors you have to trust though.

Re:Signal Adds Cryptocurrency Support on Wednesday April 07, 2021 @10:05AM (#26725144)
> No you don't - no-one's forcing you to use it.

I was phrasing that unclear, I meant that you have to trust Intel if you use Mobilecoin.

> What's important is that you get to continue to consciously exercise that choice.

Why wouldn't you be able to exercise that choice?

Re:Signal Adds Cryptocurrency Support on Wednesday April 07, 2021 @09:18AM (#26724465)
It's not just opposition to cryptocurrencies per se, the choice of Mobilecoin is also problematic[0]. On top of that you have to trust Intel.

Thanks for this answer, I don't go into the gym so I only knew steroids, and wasn't sure about the rest.
What is a PED? You mean performance-enhancing drugs?

I wanted to read the article you linked to, but seems like they have a region lock for EU countries. Its been what, nearly three years since GDPR took effect?

Re:Show HN: Kloudi – Locally-hosted universal CLI on Tuesday February 09, 2021 @05:53AM (#26075991)
Why are you using fullstory.com on your website? This does not inspire confidence in a product that is also available for selfhosting.

(Also: There seems to be some sort of scroll hijacking which makes the performance of the website rather slow)

Re:Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce on Wednesday January 13, 2021 @12:40PM (#25765381)
I agree, on top of that the animation while scrolling feels like scroll-hijacking. At first I thought the page is somehow laggy, when it isn't.

You have to differentiate between claims made against him and what he did in reality.

Most of those claims seem to be fabricated and/or were even redacted by the sources, see:

Maybe displaying it in table Layout for all IE11 users would be a better solution.
Re:Warning: 2016 MacBook Pro is not compatible with Linux on Thursday November 10, 2016 @05:19PM (#12925041)
What are those reasons apart from having a "better" ui? (Which is highly subjective and if you use a tiling wm Linux is probably the better choice).

What turns me off OS X is the lack of a good package manager with up to date packages. Has this changed?

Re:In India, a Rich Food Culture Vanishes from the Train Tracks on Saturday September 17, 2016 @09:06PM (#12523398)
You mean the western toilet in the higher classes of the train?

I've found that Indian toilets are more hygienic while travelling India, because you don't touch the toilet at all. Just bring your own toilet paper.

Re:Bad predictions about the internet on Thursday August 25, 2016 @07:29AM (#12358213)
In Germany you can just go into any bathroom and drink the water / refill your bottle there.

The public WiFi is terrible though, I agree.

You could also try a shared flat (WG). I'm paying 320€ per month (Warmmiete) in Wedding. It might not be the coolest place in town, but it has certainly more bars and nightlife than Mitte.

Also its about 10-15min into Mitte by bike or public transport.
