If it means that the world is a better place afterwards for them, some hardship for us all is not a bad thing. That includes me and my family. It's not an anarchist pipe dream. It happens when the government sends your country to war as well don't forget.
I talk to a lot of people from the rather war-torn bits of Eastern Europe and they'd do it again to be free from opression.
People are definitely evil when they shrug off the moral implications of what they're doing for a pile of cash or turn a blind eye to the consequences of doing something. There are a lot of evil people on here and each little action adds a paper cut to society.
The best interim approach is to destroy all means of facilitating the dictatorship. In this case that means destroying the tools by which we work, destroying the banks, the commerce regimes and the communication and logistic platforms muck like the Russians did when they pulled out of the Eastern Bloc. No one has to be hurt to do that but people will go hungry, jobless and penniless. This will however open their eyes to the situation.
I'm not advocating this as a solution nor would act upon it but I'm without a better option in my mind.
Edit: to the down voters. This is not reddit. Don't down vote because you disagree, down vote because it's not relevant. This is relevant discussion.
I haven't built my own PC for a number of years and probably wouldn't consider it any more to be honest (MacBook FTW). I will however recommend this to anyone who does ask me about self-builds :)
You have Ctrl-F as discussed which is completely different to the rest of windows.
You have alt-S for send as well which is used in some language for special characters.
And the most annoying is shift+enter. When you want a single line break in an HTMl email it sends it instead. This has a warning now.
No end of grief those have given me.
Nor has the master programmer worked for a company populated by utter morons who leave a large minefield in every task where all one-day estimates turn into one week ones the moment you start sharpening your tools...
(that's reality in corporate land)
Too bad I'm sitting here reading HN and playing my piano for a bit between emails...
Closed source proprietary crypto, you just don't know who wrote it, who audited it and who backdoored it and who knows of any flaws in it.
Open source crypto, it's there. Go read the source. Anyone can and it's open for audit.
There aren't enough eyeballs I agree but there are infinitely more trustworthy people looking at it than closed source.
Ex IBS sufferer here.
Fixed it myself after 3 years of hell from doctors who quite clearly were a) short of any realistic knowledge on the matter and b) quite clearly using me as an experimental subject for everything the drug company was pushing at the time.
Worked out how to reset it myself: just drank water for the best part of two weeks and low end carbs (bran flakes with water on) and nothing else. Felt like crap for about 4 days then started to improve. After my butt stopped wrenching daily, I introduced normal foods back one at a time over the space of 3 months, ending with meat and heavy carbs.
I got these steps from a microbiologist rather than a doctor.
That worked for me wonderfully.
That is my philosophy.
Managing licenses sometimes has a large overhead as well.
Fuck all extra value. 395 seats for nothing. Not only that, it's a pile of crap. It's slow, unreliable and requires so much configuration to bend it into an acceptable shape that it has cost probably 20 days' work on top of that and requires someone to spend 2-3 days a month on it. It has also gone down twice due to workflow failures and indexing bugs which have taken a day to resolve bouncing back and forth to support (they are actually quite good). We also integrate with Crucible which barely works on a good day and we've resorted to restarting it twice a day to stop it leaking memory and hanging. Plus it takes 9 whole days to index our repository after an upgrade!!!
And we can't go hosted because X isn't available and Y isn't available. Also hosted LOST a load of people's data a year or so ago.
Believe it or not, including the pricing strategy and administrative overhead we could have wrote our own tailored software for less after 3 years.
Bad product selection on our part, but despite the marketing and general buzz around Atlassian being the opposite, it stinks as a platform. Nothing but pain.
I have all of that and pay nothing. It builds up otherwise very rapidly.
For example the company I work for currently churns out a mere $16k a year for JIRA now that the pay pay pay has caught up...
I got taught BASIC (BBC BASIC) and some ARM assembler [1] in 1992 at school in maths.
[1] ARM assembler because our maths teacher was moonlighting selling RISCOS software and was quite helpful.
They were an aerospace/defense company building IFF units no less...
(No joke)
Then when I snuff it, capital gains time...
If you want quality try bytemark/bigv or Colo with exonetric.
Edit: I tried linode and was pretty happy but I don't trust something so far from home. Also tried digital ocean but the lagging kernels shot it for me.
I hope we don't get another YML, an inferior and minute subset of XML's capabilities with all its problems and none of its advantages and tooling. I've used XML for years and once you understand it properly it's fine.
Call me old school but I find lightweight markup to be a hack job.
b) the problem is complicated. Complicated problems need lots of lines of code. 100kloc isn't much. The thing I'm working on has 5.2Mloc and took 25 people 20 years to write. To the layman it probably looks like it does less than this typesetter meaning it's a bad metric to use.
My MacTeX installation is about 1300Mb if that's any gauge.
CVS works because they didn't fuck it up.
One of the really cool things is they had developed a method of determining what keys were pressed on a typewriter by the sound back then (these were IBM ones so this wasn't hard) and had to design ways for the sound to be dampened enough to not reveal it outside of the communications rooms. Even things like heating pipes were carefully dampened.
What you need to look at is high finance, defence and global infrastructure corporations.
I'd be a noisy activist but I'd rather subvert the system silently and educate my children to be ethical, upstanding and to quietly have zero respect for implied authority. Better a grey man[1] than a dead man walking.
[1] from the survivalist wingnuts, but a valid philosophy: "Grey man - an individual who possesses the skills, ability and intent to blend into any situation or surrounding without standing out, concealing his or her true skills, ability, and intent from others."
