I don’t see a problem. Isn’t that the official random number?

https://xkcd.com/221

That doesn't explain why they took the SR-71A off display. What would they need the actual plane for? They must have enough engineering diagrams to build up computer models for whatever new plane they would design.

Why call up the old engineers?

My guess this started as a misunderstanding and nobody wants to admit it.

Like Four Seasons Total Landscaping or Tools For Humanity and Bruno Mars.

Is this another Four Seasons Total Landscaping or when Tools For Humanity announced a partnership with Bruno Mars instead of Thirty Seconds to Mars?

Maybe someone in power made a comment like "We need an awesome project like that futuristic black airplane from the 1960s" and through multiple layers of incompetency an effort to restore the SR-71A that had been on display in a museum for 26 years started.

And now its too far along for anyone to say it was a stupid misunderstanding.

I have children and I’ve never heard any arguments for DLS that make any sense.

Most of the time people conflate longer summer days with DLS.

The situation with dark mornings is winter not standard time.

My children are already waking to school in daylight this time of year prior to the switch to DLS.

As others have said. I would rather permanent standard time but I’ll take permanent DLS. Moving the clocks twice a year is insanity.

Sleep is the bottleneck.

I call my personal methodology PDD, Pain Driven Development.

Fix the thing that is causing the most pain. Or is likely to cause pain in the near future.

I also was bit disappointed when it wasn't smart wheels. Then I got impressed to see it handle the drops and stairs.

I’m a fan of authentic retro hardware. That sounds like an awesome cabinet, I would love to spend hours and pockets full of quarters playing on it.

This post caused me to go down a rabbit hole about CRT simulation.

Looks like it is a thing.

Re:Studios: Please Don't Spoil the Movie We Are Seated to See on Thursday October 10, 2024 @03:09PM (#41802315)
My younger kids hadn’t seen the Matrix and I thought the 25th anniversary release in the theater would be perfect.

Leading up to it I tried to create the mystery for them that I remembered 25 years ago.

All of the mystery was destroyed with the featurette.

I was so annoyed and disappointed. But they enjoyed the movie so that was good at least.

Re:Apple iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max on Monday September 09, 2024 @04:24PM (#41493255)
I would be fine with the Pro models getting larger screens if they would shrink the standard phone. I'm still trying to survive with my 12 mini for as long as possible until the battery dies. I tried a standard iPhone 15 for two weeks last year and I wasn't happy with the larger size and returned it.

The mini was a great form factor, fits in more pockets comfortably and the whole screen is within reach of my thumb when using the phone one-handed.

Excellent article. Very well presented with just the right level of detail and drama.

I had no intention of learning about ADB or crazy Apple USB power-on hacks but here I am having had a great time while doing just that.

10/10 would recommend and now this blog is on my reading list.

I agree with you but handing the power to the Executive Branch doesn't solve the problem.

The people need to demand more from their elected officials but the two parties have done an outstanding job getting us to fight with each other so we forget how the corporations are controlling everything.

I want to respond with a Beowulf cluster joke.

Then I remembered this isn’t slashdot and it isn’t 2001.

Now I’m reminded of how old I’ve gotten.

Re:Hexsheets: Hexagonal Spreadsheets on Tuesday August 06, 2024 @02:03PM (#41173455)
This is crazy and amazing, thanks for sharing.

I now want Matt Parker to do a video about it.

He loves both spreadsheets and hexagons.

I was thinking the same thing. Skip the extra testing and yolo that thing to the moon.
A few months ago I paired for the tree data to figure out the best place on our property to place some planter beds.

I’m very happy with the results. It confirmed my guess that a specific section gets more light over the year even though there is a bit more shade in the mornings until late spring.

I had been doing a similar 1kw trickle charging setup for 3 years. While it was sufficient for daily driving we would go on longer drives regularly, mostly on weekends so 2-4 times a month.

It was annoying mental overhead to have to plan out the charging so often.

Three months ago we ran 240v to the garage and now have 12kw charging at home. It has been a game changer! We don’t have to think or plan around the charging. Every morning the car is at 75% (the limit we have set). And if we are going on a long drive I can move it to 90% or 100%.

I really regret not getting the level 2 charger years ago when we got our first EV.

Projects like this are a great way to appreciate how much can fit into an IC.

Reminds me of the Megaprocessor project.

Re:Time to delete your Glassdoor account on Thursday March 14, 2024 @02:16PM (#39707213)
I haven’t used Glassdoor for years. I just checked and my account didn’t have any personal information listed. My name and other fields in my profile were “*”

I didn’t see a way to delete my data but I don’t think they had much in the first place.

I did use the “deactivate account” option.

Re:I was kidnapped by my runaway electric car on Wednesday October 04, 2023 @04:34PM (#37771334)
> ''After that, a police officer jumped into my car and did something which seemed to keep the car still."

How can they leave it at “did something”. That is a very important part of the story.

There is a lot here that doesn’t make sense.

He had to drive for a long time to be able to call and wait for the police to arrive.

Too many things don’t seem plausible.

Re:The iPhone 13 mini is dead on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @01:52PM (#37499507)
I love my iPhone 12 mini I'm glad I was able to get a full rebuild under warranty 6 months ago. The main board died but as a side effect the battery life is back to a like-new state.

I don't really want to get a "full size" phone. My only hope is this phone lasts until the next SE refresh and that it is a decent phone.

I have a Tesla Model Y and I like to do UX testing the first time they ride in my car.

People often have a harder time figuring out how to use the external door handles than getting out.

People more often find the manual door release before the automatic button.

I feel bad for the guy that got stuck but I think this is more of a panic situation where he felt there wasn’t a way out before trying to find the manual release.

[edit] to be fair both button and manual methods are very user friendly. They are both in very common hand resting locations. After you use the button once you never need to think about it again.

Re:Most cars still cost more to charge than to fill up with gas on Wednesday August 02, 2023 @06:08PM (#36978415)
This matches my experience with our two EVs.

One thing to add is that range increases a lot when driving below 45 mph. For city driving we get a lot more range for the same cost.

Switching from a minivan to a Nissan Leaf for around-town driving was a huge cost savings per month.

Re:A Room-Temperature Superconductor? New Developments on Tuesday August 01, 2023 @01:46PM (#36959588)
What has happened to HN the past few months? So much AI, Superconductors and open source air quality monitoring.
Re:Open Source Outdoor Air Quality Monitor on Saturday July 29, 2023 @09:05PM (#36926605)
Power of Ethernet would be a nice option.

Wouldn’t data over usb-c require a computer to drive it?

Re:Forget Solar Panels. Here Come Rain Panels on Friday July 28, 2023 @05:50PM (#36913837)
Wow, I totally forgot about solar fricken roadways. That video was 2014.

Looks like they ended up getting over $6m in funding. I can’t tell how alive they are but they received some FCC approval for the wireless connectivity in Jan 2022.

“So you are saying there’s a chance?”

https://solarroadways.com/faq-funding/

When CEOs make statements like this I assume they know they are lying for sake of the company.

What makes this more interesting is that he clearly believed it was safe. So he wasn’t necessarily unethical. It is more that he was a bad engineer and a poor judge of risk.

The article says prices went up 50% during the pandemic and now have fallen 18%.

This sounds more like a mild correction not a crash.

I feel bad for people that overpaid at the peak though.
