John, regardless of whatever you want to believe and accuse me of, your association with the Liberal Party of Canada won't help your wifes situation as her university is also famous in Korea for being quite left leaning. Unlike the US, alumni of Korean universities are fully public and the reason goranmoomin is saying there are lot of PhDs and university professors having difficulty with their US visa is related to what was written here that was flagged:

I'm very intimate with the details for what sort of Koreans do not get their visas and as long as she didn't participate in the anti-Yoon protests (which US views largely as anti-US), expressed support for Lee Jae Myung (a staunchly anti-US [1] and pro-China president accused of election fraud)[2] or have implied support for the Chinese Communist Party or made sympathetic remarks regarding North Korea she will be fine. If she is an academic in Korea than the dragnet will be cast even wider, who she interacts with what are their past activities will impact her. In fact most of the visa denials from Korean academic institutions which lean heavily to the left so this association alone might be to her disadvantage.

There might or might not be several Korean telegram groups that actively scan Korean social media and report anti-US, pro-China, anti-Yoon protestors and they have been very successful in getting tens of thousands of visas denied.

The telegram groups that might or might not exist employ both automated and manual approaches. Web crawlers with a bunch of Korean mobile proxies to scan KakaoTalk, radical feminist, far left communities that archive their posts. Some of them will even infiltrate private chat groups and capture their private messages and report them directly to US authorities. Many of these 'social network sanitzation' services are total scams and cannot evade these ideologically motivated citizen SIG/HUM groups.

Don't ask me why this is happening in Korea, I'm just reporting the details, just know that its highly effective, highly motivated and almost entirely voluntary. Already large businesses in Korea are panicking because they cannot send their workers to the US [2]. Only Samsung managed to obtain a week long visa to manage their facilities. Hyundai appears to be the only exception as they've announced massive investments in the US.

Don't let her bother deleting or hiding her social media, as that will even attract more scrutiny. If she has any of the items I mentioned then unfortunately her visa denial is guaranteed.

Your political bias is obviously getting in the way of a fair impartial take on the situation. Lee Jae Myung is absolutely calling for the removal of USFK and even published on record of calling it "an American occupation of Korea". Previously his comments towards what Korea should do in case Taiwan is invaded sparked outcries for what was essentially kowtowing to Beijing and not assisting Taiwan or US/Japan navy. Telling people to ignore this verifiable public statements as "alt-right" or "fake news" only reinforces the sensitivity surrounding Lee Jae Myung's outright censorship (within hours of becoming president has virtually taken down all critical Youtubers calling out his past crimes, including multiple convictions related to fraud which as of recent saw his right hand man get 11 years in prison, not to mention the transfer of $8 million USD to North Korea during his time as a city governor in Seoul area which directly violated US sanctions).

One needs not do much more than simple googling to find Lee Jae Myung is not good news to US alliance, especially one that sees US Forces Korea as an "occupying force".

United States was initially negative towards the martial law that failed but the Trump's camp largely views it positively after the election fraud evidence presented by International Election Monitoring Team, a group of American ambassadors and policy makers.

Please stop treating HN users like children, they have access to the internet, they can translate the Korean articles or even watch the latest shocking report on the state of election fraud in South Korea, view the evidence presented and make up their own minds [1].

KCPAC and CPAC are closely aligned due to the shared US-Korea alliances and its clear you think any conservative views/groups are far-right which is exactly what people who are on the extreme fringes like to label any opposing view as such.

You are shooting the messenger and accusing me of racism for simply presenting another side of the situation in Korea which you claim monopoly over. It doesn't take much effort to you to just label every piece of verifiable facts as "far-right" to get people to stop looking but the Overton Window has shifted.

Also, accusing me of being agent and trying to flag my comments as you've done previously isn't going to do anything for you, all it does is make you look like you are trying to censor and push your side of the coin.

Perhaps, we should comb through your social media history to see if you are as clean cut as you claim? I think it's highly unwise for you to dox yourself like this especially given the light of the specific telegram groups I mentioned (they are not restricted to just people posting in Korean or Koreans in Korea btw).

Not sure why you are being downvoted, it makes perfect sense that if you do not like America and you harbor anti-American statements you should not enjoy the privilege of being allowed into the country.

Not only hypocritical but selfish to demand you be let in to the country you hate.

its not soley for money and thats not why attention is important and matters for a large platform
thats a great excuse to avoid answering my question, not that i care very much for your opinion but i find it ironic that you would use censorship to deflect attention from a non issue
Re:SymbolicAI: A neuro-symbolic perspective on LLMs on Friday June 27, 2025 @10:16PM (#44401911)
what are the implicaitons and actual real world application of this? better agents? more accurate, debuggable LLM answers?
Not sure what the issue here is, if you change your location a lot using VPN, it will trigger their bot detection and lock you out, its a feature.

You can always ask for a refund in situations like this and resubscribe to x premium.

A real problem with these platforms not just x is mass reporting, fake DMCAs all pose vulnerabilities which are hard to address.

Even on HN, if you have non-conforming opinions of those with higher points, you will be censored, flagged etc.

Re:Backyard Coffee and Jazz in Kyoto on Monday June 23, 2025 @02:42PM (#44358739)
They idealize Japan through fetishized objects. If you showed the picture of that same coffee shop in Philippines or some south east asian country, nobody in the West would care.

But attaching the Japan label suddenly makes it more appealing as it invokes many distorted (and misinformed) aspects of Japan.

It's the same annoying vibe that Koreans get when they come across a foreigner who is into Kpop. Most Koreans do not care for Kpop as do most Japanese do not care for Anime.

Yet these exports create a parasocial relationship with a foreign country that when broken turn them into passive aggressive bigots.

The more you covet the harsher the rejection. Japanese and Korean society simply has no place for outsiders. Having a Japanese passport doesn't make you Japanese as it will not change your ancestral history, having your gender changed on your drivers license doesn't change the biological history and so on.

I dont think they care as long as the content is good. Even memes popular at that demographic are AI generated today.
This type of comment I find very peculiar, it attempts to normalize the intimidation and censorship of truths when we know that isn't the consensus nor desired.

Overall, very disappointing to come on HN and find any thread critical of this one country results in mass flagging, censorship and hasbara EVERY SINGLE TIME

I do wonder with all the criticisms and faults EU and West points out in other parts of the world, this one country gets a complete pass that overrides and contradicts every single value that they supposedly stand for at the risk of appearing like they have no value or morals.

The rest of the world is getting tired of this double standard. It's justified when we do it and it's a crime if others do it. It's no wonder the youth and global opinions have turned sour.

why this VPN in particular?
I always wonder what it takes to start a VPN? It's super saturated yet there's clear winners. Also I wonder how the operator is able to side step liability for obvious illegal use cases.

The internet has become a very hostile place and its not just surveillance but peer to peer political persecution where someone doesn't follow the script or believe the same thing they do and they lash out and try to censor them by mass reporting or DDOS

I miss the old internet where we used to escape to avoid reality, now we go offline to avoid the internet.

Its the result of managed breeding by slave owners not uncommon with the black demographic in Americas and shouldnt be used to argue "race is a construct its not real"
race is NOT a social construct for the same reason Japanese and Finnish and Africans are totally distinguishable. The American liberal progressive definitions simply are constructs to dilute culture into a bland, boring, politically correct minefield to keep the masses controllable.
Prior to industrial revolution, mass immigration was difficult, not only because of logistics but tribalism.
"traditional races" Still going strong outside the anglosphere and western europe. There is no concept of "traditional" or "progressive", these are uniquely political concepts applied to race specifically in the West.

ex) Koreans still maintain the purest racial pedigree followed by Japan. There is almost no desire to "mix" or accept them since the identity is purely derived from ethnic purity which has been vilified since WW2.

Definitely not helping stereotypes
Re:Trends โ€“ Artificial Intelligence on Saturday May 31, 2025 @02:09AM (#44142208)
I think biochemistry might be the biggest beneficiary of "good enough" AI. Much of the expensive and slow parts of discovery (like creating new drug or making sense of some crazy complicated protein structure) are already speedrunning and while I'm on the conservative side of estimates, with mathematical certainty will see groundbreaking new drugs, discoveries from biochemistry field and not in the distant future but in a few years.

For the other stuff like automating white collar jobs, good enough might not suffice due to the intricate dependencies and implicit contracts formed naturally out of human groups.

Creative jobs will be the most impacted by "good enough" depending on the number of features. For 2d art it was almost certainly over (unless you add text feature to it like manga). You can see with increasing features, like starting with general photography, stock photography and now product photography are overnight made redundant. ex) with the latest Flux image editor negates a need to hire a photo editor, photographer, camera equipment, lighting, product artist. Veo3 not quite there but handles speech features in video generation that other models did not and getting closer to replacing videographers. I think 3d model is the next frontier here following the trend but is still quite difficult as it involves mesh generation/texture/rigging/animation/physics that also must come with shaders and interaction with other 3d models.

Software engineering falls somewhat in the creative field but also shares the complexity from white collar jobs for the same reason that will prevent it from being completed automatable with "good enough".

The hallucination issue is less of an issue and an old trope. The truly challenging enemy of AI of "good enough" is due to "not enough context" and "poor context compression and recall". The problems I listed in white collar and software engineering jobs is context problem. The compression of contexts cannot be stable as the former isn't solved. The fast efficient recall of contexts then cannot take place due to poor compression and so on.

This is just my observation of seeing how things are progressing. I do feel that we will see something different from LLM altogether that could solve some of the context issues but a major misalignment of incentives is what I think would prevent an AGI know-all-see-all type of deal. ex) you might not have any incentive to share all the essential context with the AI because you might become irrelevant and want it to stay in the dark. you might have a union or some social organization to legislate monopoly of human knowledge/skill workers in a field.

but perhaps THE most difficult problem even after we solve the context problem is the inability for the God AGI to be awake or conscious which is absolutely critical in many real world applications.

I like to focus more on the very near impact of what AI is currently doing in the labs and its impact on humans than worrying about who and when all of the other problems are going to be addressed.

Whether we get a UBI-first socialist world order or a continuation of technological feudalism with the poors still using GPTs while the rich sell the energy and chips (software would almost be worthless on its own by then) is the least of my concern.

I'm an optimist and I'm very excited for the very-near and immediate impact of our currently available AI tools doing the "good enough" in very positive ways.

I can't tell if it uses firecracker but thats my main question too. I'm curious as to whether microsandbox will be maintained and proper auditing will be done.

I welcome alternatives. It's been tough wrestling with Firecracker and OCI images. Kata container is also tough.

Re:FLUX.1 Kontext on Friday May 30, 2025 @03:05PM (#44139042)
I find that people who are hypersensitive to racism are usually themselves pretty racist. It's like people who are aroused by something taboo are usually the biggest critic. I forget what this phenomena is called.
That only happens when the person disagrees or has a bone to pick and its existed long before LLM calling each other "bots" or "spooks" or whatever label to discredit and get others to avoid interaction.
Doubt it because if it was obvious they would immediately point it out.

Based on the sheer number of upvotes and replies I see, its obvious nobody can tell.

I just don't think there is anyway to stop these agent posts especially after the last few releases of LLM models.

If an individual like me can pull this of imagine what others can do.

How does this compare to Anubis, another similar PoW based CAPTCHA?

Paired with this, and if there is a way to block out DDOS https traffic then we might be able to stop dependence on Cloudflare altogether.

I've been running an experiment on HN since last november using agents. My goal is largely for educational purposes and the ramifications are grim as nobody has been able to detect them.

I see people still interacting with them, upvoting their comments and being clueless that they are talking to a bot. If HN users can't detect them then reddit and X users do not stand chance.

Re:Will Jesus Christ return in an election year? on Thursday May 29, 2025 @04:55PM (#44130309)
Interesting but US isn't the only country that does this. There's an entire religion that was imported out of virtue signaling politics that rose out of the economic comforts afforded by this "protestant theology" that defeated a major superpower.

Fast forward to today, that foreign religion has multiplied (largely due to religious customs) while the local population has dwindled and lost much of its power owing to a political ideology overriding theology.

I see this foreign religion not being compatible with the host country's religion or value system and that many are rallying behind a sort of pan-Western theology to counter the many social issues throughout.

They chosen Asian traits that Western beauty standards fetishize that in Asia wouldn't be taken serious at all.

I notice American text2image models tend to generate less attractive and more darker skinned humans where as Chinese text2image generate attractive and more light skinned humans.

I think this is another area where Chinese AI models shine.

the difference means getting funded or not. people fake testimonials and put logos of large companies too on their saas.

some people even buy residential proxies and create accounts on communities that can steer them towards specific action like "hey lets short squeeze this company let me sell you my call option" etc.

there's no incentive to be honest, i know two founders where one cheated with fake accounts, github likes and exited. the other ultimately gave up and worked in another field.

the old saying "if you lie to those who wants to be lied to you will become wealthy" rings true.

however at the end of the day it is dishonest and money earned through deception is bad.

i think these fears are very much warranted. its too easy to sneak in a listening device or even cameras or other ways to capture sigint without either

i do think this is more of a symbol in that Trump appears to be shifting suddenly away from AIPAC and Israel in general after the Waltz-Signalgate where he was spying for Israel.

Rumor has it that Trump exploded with anger when he found out and is pulling a 180 on policy in middle east and both saudi, qatar have stepped in with liquidity.
