And when it is it will still get stuck in loops.
My first impression was this could have been written by a rogue opencode agent. There's nothing in the article to suggest this is the story of a real person.
Re:Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:55AM (#50326274)
Not surprising UK and Japan share trains as well as so much, thanks for the example!

I have some vague recollection of being confused by this when in London a while a back. I think, instead of buying a ticket from a seemingly unrelated company I ended up re-searching at the source. Can't remember a price difference, most likely there wasn't, but it felt shady. So I guess integration still isn't necessarily a great UX...

Re:Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:13AM (#50324169)
I think a fundamental issue is just that there are so many train companies. I don't think many (any?) other countries have quite so many, even JR isn't just one company. Even when individual companies put some effort into a renewal making things easier, when the experience starts from first finding out even which company to book from, there's a huge barrier to entry.

I think it is possible to define a booking standard so a meta provider could handle things, like trip.com etc for flights, maybe someday.

Re:Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:07AM (#50324132)
It really depends on industry and size - notably, it's ironic but smallish-medium businesses are the most stuck in old practices. They don't have shareholders or the org structure to change things, while the largest companies, makers, ad agencies, etc have largely moved forward to more outcome focused process. The hierarchy definitely still slows things down, requiring a lot of paper approvals to actually do anything. But holding your tongue in a meeting is frowned upon at at least many large cap.
Re:Ghostty 1.4.0 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @06:15AM (#50271298)
Out of curiosity if Kitty works well for you what would be the reason to switch to Ghostty? I've never tried Kitty before but now want to see what it's like since it seems quite advanced.
Re:A Markdown File Should Just Open on Saturday October 24, 2026 @08:11AM (#50220521)
I just want Google Docs to properly support Markdown. Everything else after that.
No one here seemed to understand your question, which is one I had too. Probably because no one but the board have the answer.

My guess is you can expect a stock price crash if your founder-star CEO moves away from HQ? It would mean tech stocks behave quite differently from e.g. Starbucks. Also seems like a literal chicken race since Mark would be affected even more than the board if that happened on top of everything else.

I guess most likely is they just needed a reason of some sort to report to the SEC so that's what they used. Much nicer sounding than Mark threatening to replace the board, or the board are obviously his puppets, or anything else that happens at a founder-controlled (via low-vote shares) company.

This made me wonder and checking rotten tomatoes, those are indeed some high scores. Time seems to be an exception and everything it said makes sense to me as someone who hasn't watched it.

Don't worry too much, while a certain sphere will watch this movie I doubt "most people" will watch it. Personally I won't watch it only since it's been a long time and I have no interest in this topic anymore. I suspect this will be common.

> means "LLM cheating" is going to be a serious problem to be solved before we'll trust them with anything meaningful.

Would have been great if this was solved before anyone started trusting them with anything meaningful.

> There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data.

If my blog got DoS'd from HN was remotely close to any of these, would be perfectly normal but as it stands this is exactly why gatekeepers are perhaps inevitable, but should never be reveled.

Did anyone read the paper or just decide to respond based on mostly racist preexisting bias?

This isn't even a research paper really, it is a survey paper that just looked for other papers. One point stood out a lot

> All but one survey from the 2020s were online surveys

This is already bias let alone what bias may be within each survey which isn't fleshed out in the linked paper. I wouldn't be surprised if at least one survey was run on NicoNico or similar platform.

The adult video industry continues to thrive and P2P just grows, including reaching sex tourism status thanks to the cheap yen, in both directions if looking at the growing denied entries to Japanese hostesses.

Sorry if you have some anime based preconception that Japanese people are pure or something but they are normal, and not Christian. Japanese people still have sex, look into the real facts.

Yes the current administration is generally responsible and yes they have caused a lot of problems. But can't we be clear this is primarily an Elon problem? No way of knowing but I would be surprised if in a timeline where Elon backed Harris and got her the win, DOGE would not have happened with similarly little impact.

I know many people in big tech that complain about the administration and drive a Tesla to work. People with plenty of wealth to change cars etc if willing. They enabled DOGE.

> Firefox is slow again

Currently I am feeling this too but only for one site, GitHub. Which is where is spend most time during the day...

Quite sad, I don't know if it's GitHub's fault or not but Firefox needs to figure out what's going wrong here soon or people like me may be literally forced to Chromium.

Seriously never used Chrome?
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:05AM (#50086360)
This was my first and naturally last experience with Gemini maybe around 2.5 or 3.0. Impressive they can keep up the consistency this well.
I would love to use GrapheneOS but Google Pay is a requirement for me. Platform is a moat, and I think the above comments about Harmony solidify that if your country has the will to create a home grown platform, it can happen. I don't think any other country would be able to make that work (maybe AI changes things dunno)
Re:Deno Is Joining Cloudflare on Sunday October 11, 2026 @11:17AM (#50044227)
It felt very marketing rather than technical to me. Sorry fallen was probably too baitworthy, shift in role / priority probably but either way, it wasn't a fun read for me. Thanks for asking though!
Re:Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:21AM (#50043611)
> I say that doesn't logically compute.

Not sure it's logical but I would say there are millenia of history to show the trend, and more so there is no logic or evidence to show American freedom has been in good faith (many were slaughtered satisfying manifest destiny).

FWIW I'm not anti-America. But I am anti-idealist (and as above, I see no reason to believe America idealist) since there is nothing to show ideals actually hold up. For humans to live together, it's better to acknowledge this and create "logical" frameworks rather than rely on idealism.

Re:Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Sunday October 11, 2026 @07:31AM (#50042067)
Right I didn't read too much into the word "initiative", the ICC would obviously not exist if the US didn't want it to (the UN wouldn't exist if they didn't want it to, let alone want a tool for leverage) so of course it wasn't established specifically to target the US. So the poster was mostly talking about using it as a tool against the US now, not from founding, was my reading. Basically I can only see my own comment acknowledging American hegemony as "americacentric" (the current world was created by america), not the original one. Was there something else you meant?
Re:Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Sunday October 11, 2026 @01:51AM (#50040164)
It's not entitled to anything, it just acts in its own interests like every single country (yes every single one that's the definition of a country). IIC sanctioned Israel, a key American vassel. America dismantles the ICC. Same story that has been happening for millenia. This form of geopolitics is what we humans have built.

Complain about the geopolitics, call out humans for where we have gotten, maybe even take some responsibility for it. But calling out one player for the sake of self gratification will either replace that player with a different one, not change the way we have decided to govern.

Re:Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Sunday October 11, 2026 @01:43AM (#50040129)
America has been the most powerful state, like Britain was before, like China, Persia, etc before. This is reality, not a view. In history, there are few periods without a concept of "most powerful state" since humans built geopolitics into the most efficient way to advance the species (most animals are cooperative instead).

It's normal for times to change and finally cracks are showing in American hegemony (AI dominance will either make or break it). But ignoring that is just ignoring reality.

Re:Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court on Sunday October 11, 2026 @01:38AM (#50040111)
That seems to be what they are arguing. Not sure what you are arguing really.
Re:Deno Is Joining Cloudflare on Sunday October 11, 2026 @01:29AM (#50040077)
My biggest takeaway from this is how far Kenton has fallen. That's one of the most cringy blog posts I've ever read.
Thanks for the explanation! Wow releasing regressions only for older devices, that's something.

GrapheneOS looks really good thanks for working on it. Unfortunately Google Pay is critical for me and it's unfortunate Google is gatekeeping that, but I will look on jealously.

I had assumed this was just Google effectively "ending support" for my 9a by forcing some AI thing into my lowish RAM. I can't believe even the latest Pixel users are having this problem since I thought they actually QA those.

Sorry but at this point, for me it is shame on every Googler for continuing at a company that has absolutely no interest in user experience anymore. It's on you, directly or indirectly.

Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:06AM (#49892564)
Smart people delegate to dumb people. Of course ideally dumb people get slightly smarter. From my experience sonnet is mostly for opus or fable to delegate to. So delegates getting more useful is always a good thing.

Seeing 2000 years of history being replayed by the AI startups is pretty weird right?

I noticed Sol seems to get rate limited enough to get pretty annoying now. Same for me with every model release that isn't really better than the last, leaving the old model doesn't mean much when they start shifting over capacity.
This is a government that needs anything to distract from its failures indeed. But that's not changing unfortunately - given there seems to be no real direction to fix the economy that is currently in a gutter, I think it's pragmatic to restrict immigration. Crime is skyrocketing, both Japanese and immigrants - even the Yakuza are getting into scam operations on Katagi, i.e. normal people. This basically never happened before and is a turning point. It's what happens in a bad economy and will just continue to get worse.

Low wage immigrants will not be able to fix the economy (demographics related decline is still decades away, yes it is important long term but not if the fundamentals don't improve). They will increase crime though since that's just what happens when you are poor in a bad economy. There won't be culling of poor locals but restricting inpu where possible, immigration, seems ok given the overall picture.

Re:Wall Street Is Growing Skeptical of the Data Center Boom on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @03:39AM (#49797820)
While it seems there are other examples in the article, still, leading with Wall State is skeptical of SoftBank doesn't make the point land very hard.
