I make it work with 420k combined income, and I’m able to save 20% (with a kid on the way not sure how this will change but that’s also why we have been saving aggressively prior).

You don’t need to send them to private school and rent a swanky place or buy a 2M home. You can get things below the median and it’ll be ok, you’ll live.

The concern is that “bad apples” get into indices and then that starts to rot people’s futures. I’m not sure how that will play out (indices can kick them out, or if the company really fails the market cap will reflect that and the index can “heal”). I’m guessing Enron was part of the index at some point, but we survived that.

That’s why the Mac mini and studio are selling like hotcakes. Massive unified memory with massive cpu performance, with a solid hardware. If I had 3-4K burning a hole in my pocket I know what I’d be getting.
It seems to me that both parties are finding fewer things to agree upon, while thinking negatively of the opposition and positively of their own. It’s become more of a “my team” thing, and the policies are good if we do it and bad if the others do. Of course one party is far more authoritarian than others and the choice is clear to some, but given political engagement in this country I see more disagreement than agreement when it comes to deciding on policies for the common good.

Capitalism is just another farce without good regulation.
> antifa supporters on HN

Come again? If you have umbrage against antifa, surely you’re pro fascist?

> Most Americans remember how we couldn't even question COVID, DEI or kneeling for blacks and support law enforcement efforts

What do they even have anything to do with each other, except for them being right-wing talking points?

It feels more like a reverse psyop, like “look we are wearing masks now, isn’t this what you wanted”?

As long as the sides keep reducing common ground, the farther away from government for the people, by the people we go.

> The article is talking about a license plate scanner website that was being used to track the movements of ICE vehicles, follow them and harass agents.

I fail to understand why this is a problem when they do the exact same thing to civilians? On top of that there are companies like Flock who monitor civilians when ICE isn’t there.

I don’t get why you love ICE so much and want to protect them like they’re doing you some big service and not going around instilling fear in others. Have you been living under a rock?

> a massive organized anti-ICE operation?

What operation? Did they go around hacking into servers and invade their privacy?

> Headline makes it seem like ICE just did this in a vacuum.

Would they not do it in a vacuum? There’s been a a vagrant disregard for laws on their side. Why are they getting the benefit of the doubt here? It’s very clear they have been targeting certain demographics and political leaning from its institution.

My “hot take”: they’re going the direction of Disney/Marvel hybrid. Have a few handful of IPs that are extremely successful, milk it out with licensing deals in every vertical (toys, games, merch, cross-dlcs, books, etc). They’re just missing theme parks. The actual game development portion would probably be very small.
Re:Apple Music 404 Not Found on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:09PM (#50213913)
Very disappointing that the Music app on iOS doesn’t render the page. Would have been super cool to scroll in the app with some haptic feedback along with the click sound. I can understand why it won’t be there as you can’t directly navigate to a pre-determined page, but instead they force you to portal through their search button.

Even still, I’m a little sad knowing what could have been! :(

> Have you tried?

Just in one of the super blue states. My buddy lives in Texas, he’s got a couple of guns and says is easy to get.

> There are far more grown men driving lifted trucks with glow lights on them than serious threats.

The problem is these guys join ICE or act like they are, and that’s a serious threat. If you brandish Stars and Stripes / Dont Tread on Me, even if you’re a poser I’m not going to take a risk of finding out. That in itself is powerful.

> Is it practical to give weapons and combat vehicles

I get what you mean, but with how easy it is to get a gun (especially in red states), it is practical in the sense that it seems pretty easy to do and there’s no shortage.

But should we? I agree with you, absolutely fucking not.

> privacy, checks and balances, and responsibility

In their eyes it goes like this:

Privacy:- why do you need it if you have nothing to hide?

Checks and balances:- you are the balance and I’m here to check you

Responsibility:- it is my responsibility to check you

I want to say I’m being sarcastic but I don’t know anymore. Arguably their motivation is to hunt and jail people, so it feels like “personal gain” on the fringes. No job is so far removed that it’s devoid of personal gain.

Maybe that last part was a smidge too radical.

> If you're enforcing the law, you need to actually know its contents and how it works.

Not disagreeing but I can’t see how this would be practical. I think any college degree should be the absolute minimum though.

Re:Hello Toronto – Waymo Is En Route on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:04PM (#50127164)
While it might create new jobs, I don’t think what it affords you would be better.

Take the gig economy for example. There has been a rapid uptick of it taking a slice of the labor pie. If the majority of labor shifted to that, you’ll have plenty of new jobs but your quality of life will be substantially worse.

> $299 is not cheap … But even if it did cost $10, it would still be a waste of money because you spend $10 on an useless product

Moving goalposts aside, how do you know it’s useless? You might not have a use for it, but it’s weird to make such blanket statements for a product that hasn’t even been out yet.

> Schools aren't forever… Some may last for decades, and some for centuries. Some have already lasted far too long.

That seems a bit ironic?

> Grandma Sally isn't going to live forever. The house winds up on the open market in order to seek satisfaction of Grandma's debts

Not always, grandma can pass the home down to whoever. IIRC there are ways to do it without triggering a reevaluation on the original purchase price.

> Uncle is a financial planner and advised grandma to sell her house to Grandma's House LLC for $1 and pass ownership of that LLC to the offspring, avoiding prop 13/prop 19 reassessment in california.

Pretty unbelievable, really. They get a free house and tax bills from decades ago. The whole thing is made to screw over future generations, and act like it’s all hunky dory.

SF history very much indicates that prices will continue to appreciate and sustain pretty comfortably.
> Of course, let's let yet another corporate land grab take even more residential property off the market for profit-based motives.

The premise does not warrant this conclusion.

Why can’t she pay from her retirement accounts? 20K/yr isn’t all that much considering today’s cost of living. The stock market has skyrocketed in the last decade and change.

I also don’t buy 20K of property tax on a 500K home, that’s a 4% tax which seems unlikely in Chicago.

Something isn’t right. Poor financial planning maybe?

> So we should judge each piece of evidence in a vacuum?

I mean… little drops of water make the ocean, so if the complaint is with the drop then yes. Doesn’t mean the ocean is poisoned by some of these droplets though.

Two things can be true at the same time - Facebook as a whole is untrustable but you can use Muse Glimmer from them without giving them this data.

All gambling is probability-based, but not always the other way around. I think it is important to distinguish gambling as a hobby vs risk taking in a crowded market when running a company in the Valley. The article from what I can tell doesn’t really try to separate this, and that is certainly worth lamenting.

You said:

> Because when you log in you don’t want to be logged out at (what, for you, will appear to be) a random time of the future.

> That’s a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist. Nobody considers not getting logged out randomly a problem.

Isn’t this contradictory? The double negatives are really throwing me for a loop. Regardless, it’s extremely common for you to be force-logged out of a session for any portal that has sensitive info.

You’re never logged into your bank forever, SSO logins expire. The ones that don’t expire are stuff like YouTube or Netflix, but only if you use it (length of refresh token validity). Checkbox for keeping a session valid is a legitimate solution and I’m grateful it exists. Why do you say it’s a problem that doesn’t exist, when you yourself said it does?

I do not understand your thesis.

Why should it last forever?
The “anti” cancels each other out. So we are just left with “trust (me, bro)”
We are ruling by imagination now?

> you could say that congress has delegated "judicial and legislative" powers to the executive, whose will is embodied in a democratically elected president.

Bullshit. No, you cannot say that. “The non-delegation doctrine is a constitutional principle that Congress cannot delegate its legislative powers to another branch of government or to private entities.”

You get two downvotes for lies, one for each post.

Teapot Dome had an investigative Congress who actually did their job. Plus Fall went to prison. Neither of this is going to happen today.
