the impression i get is that people don’t per se assert that exploitable bugs exist in Lean, but that the volume of (code) proofs published represent a new magnitude of challenge to the integrity of Lean.

the obverse would be to assert that Lean (or any other theorem prover) is infallible under all circumstances, present and future - an even weightier claim in my opinion.

Re:JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:33AM (#50130145)
some of the pain of RAW is mitigated with good workflow. shoot RAW+JPEG and when culling, delete the RAWs you won’t edit. keep RAWs for any outstanding shots. that clears up a large proportion of the issues.

JPEG engines are getting better and more configurable (Fuji recipes, LUTs on Panasonic) which makes this workflow more viable.

what i’d love is a good intermediary archival format that is more space efficient than RAW while keeping more editing latitude than a JPEG. using a dynamic preserving tone curve like Log in 14 bits and compressing it losslessly. although i wonder if that would be much better than compressed DNGs.

perhaps my requirements aren’t that complex but i find Affinity mostly a great replacement for InDesign. there are some annoyances and unintuitive limitations but its all workable.
Re:Open-Source Rust Alternatives to Adobe Apps on Thursday October 08, 2026 @07:14AM (#50004420)
this one is an actual duplicate:

i personally like affinity better than the FOSS photoshop alternatives, mostly for UX reasons. what i still haven’t found a good replacement for is Lightroom. i use darktable but the way the interface is laid out is antithetical to getting into an efficient flow state. and i say this despite the fact that i consider the output strictly superior to Lightroom (or in fact anything i’ve ever used).

the makers of the github CLI ‘gh’ which is github themselves.

oh this is amazing. funny that they are self aware enough to talk about reducing context switching

nvidia investing in every aspect of the hype cycle is terrifying. as an ai skeptic i almost don’t want the bubble to burst anymore, i don’t know if the economy can recover at all. perhaps a new economic paradigm will emerge, but if so, the transition is going to be rough.
exactly. i really feel the bloat of wordpress but it’s so much easier than setting up a CMS infrastructure.

solve the land use problem for growing cattle feed if you want it to be maximally ethical.
Re:Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @07:52PM (#49618822)
his whole point is that specifically problems that have been held as important by consensus in the field are a finite resource. obvious example being the Clay millennium prize problems. seems like they function to shape the direction of future research into useful directions. which is to say, the process of developing a solution itself generates more useful problems.

of course thrrr are tons of problems once you remove this social consensus based filter. if i’m not mistaken Ramanujan left a book of dozens of unproven theorems, for one quick example. i don’t think that that has opened up dozens of fields of mathematical research.

Re:DaVinci Resolve 21.1 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @01:16PM (#49613321)
regardless of whether it’s possible, there is enormous value in the community, ecosystem, and learning materials centred around Reaolve as it is right now. the workflow has been refined over years. no one shot slop effort will have that network effect behind it, and if the workflow isn’t a drop-in replacement it’s dead in the water anyway.
the browser is definitely becoming more OS-like. that’s the Chromebook bet. but for proper office work you need good file management. if they’re not keen on trusting cloudy solutions by the big corps then FOSS on bare metal is the way to go.
Re:Statichost.eu – European static site hosting on Saturday September 05, 2026 @07:38AM (#49575586)
i was also extremely confused by this
Re:Statichost.eu – European static site hosting on Saturday September 05, 2026 @07:34AM (#49575567)
simply put, they aren’t the big bully. they don’t have the worlds strongest army and control of the most important currency to strongarm pretty much anyone who stands in the way.

i agree with your sentiment though.

yeah but processors phone home anyway at a level beneath the OS and there’s no european chip development worth mentioning. so i’m not sure real sovereignty is ever going to be possible. crazy considering ASML being in europe.
Re:More German than many Germans on Thursday August 06, 2026 @06:30AM (#49194866)
good lord i did read right through that. how someone could come to that conclusion is beyond me
why would that “crowd” present themselves as bots by modifying their user agent string? the point is to poison someone’s agent with sponsored “knowledge” over time.
Re:More German than many Germans on Monday August 03, 2026 @06:40AM (#49153913)
i read it as a Hamburg thing. my experience is mostly with NRW and i don’t recognise anything of this article in it. hierarchical, conservative, suspicious.
Re:More German than many Germans on Monday August 03, 2026 @06:38AM (#49153894)
yeah Munich if anything is extremely hostile to integration. i know several people who moved there and got burnt out trying to integrate. with previous knowledge of the language.
Re:A Rant About “Technology” (2005) on Sunday August 02, 2026 @11:40AM (#49145588)
there is almost no sci-fi with at least some invention and speculation that bends known physics and/or engineering, either implicitly or explicitly. novels that seem very “hard” often ignore effects that would ruin the plot, and make up physics. it might be plausible and compatible with known physical laws, but it’s speculation plain and simple.
Re:Has the New Cocaine Arrived? on Sunday August 02, 2026 @11:33AM (#49145534)
most drugs get people talking but there’s something especially cocky about the cocaine types. i’ve never done it but i can occasionally tell when someone’s used it regularly because of a particular bluster they develop.
Re:Has the New Cocaine Arrived? on Sunday August 02, 2026 @11:31AM (#49145520)
maybe my take on this is weird but spending more than 5-10 on entry is a sign it’s commercial and not really gonna be fun. the more informal the better. club goers from Londons legendary decades also describe going in for a fiver to the best parties. once the commercial interests step in, it’s a crowd of people spending to be where it’s cool to be. the cool is already elsewhere. we saw this happen in real time with Berghain over the past 5-8 years.

blows my mind that there’s not a single open solution for mobile wallets and nobody is saying anything.
Re:A Week in Matrix on Sunday August 02, 2026 @06:09AM (#49142936)
XMPP, then. it’s the continually inventing new protocols (insert XKCD comic) that i’m protesting against.
Re:Nerd culture is murdering intellectuals on Sunday August 02, 2026 @06:07AM (#49142925)
i think this has more to do with the innate tendency of a capitalist media machine: getting people into an addictive hype cycle of merchandisable content is profitable, having them read at home isn’t. content that makes one think and question takes time and effort to process and raises the bar for the audience, lowering the profit potential. making stuff that seems clever without being so is even better, the audience feels good about themselves.

Adorno reasoned this decades ago. it’s not difficult to understand why media industries in modern states produce such little thought provoking material. some of it has to do with the fact that it’ll never be popular anyway, but a difference in complexity of material is observable over time and also between countries with more and less capitalist economies.

Re:A Week in Matrix on Saturday August 01, 2026 @06:33AM (#49133067)
as someone who wasn’t online in the IRC heydays i really wonder why we can’t just build on it, instead of inventing new protocols
Re:A Week in Matrix on Saturday August 01, 2026 @06:12AM (#49132964)
tried this and it’s not always an immediate eyes-light-up. it’s a bit frustrating really, the chasm between what people know and what they need to know.
playback in Resolve would probably just use hardware decoding and barely hit your CPU or GPU. RAM usage would also not be much.
Re:Teaching Kids Forth on Thursday July 30, 2026 @04:48AM (#49107461)
i can’t imagine prefix or postfix being easier for most people to understand.
