My ex-manager once told me whenever he decides what to eat for a meal, he prioritizes calories per $.
I don't know. VB is still 10x easier than React. The gap is so obvious.
Just because your enemy wears heavy armor doesn't mean you should be naked.
Addiction to comedy shows?
LOL, let me give it a try.
HN addiction increases depression severity among already depressed developers because of all the fancy cool new stuffs others are playing around while they are stuck with outdated tech stack in day jobs just for money.
I'm on call during the Christmas week 2nd time in a row in my team. Nothing earth shattering so far. There's one issue that could be resolved earlier (by the previous oncall) so it wouldn't cause more delays in other parts...
Merry Christmas to all those are on call now.
Yes it's crazy, to say the least
in exchange for the Chinese market I guess
On one hand the US government has been complaining about too much misinformation on FB and on the other hand it has a portal to control misinformation on social network? There must be some link broken in these two?
It's reported Steve Jobs did ask Intel to provide CPU for the first gen of iPhone, but the offer price was too low so Intel would lose money. If you were the CEO of Intel, how would you explain it to the board that "we should make this deal with Apple even with loss, because I think iPhone will be the next big thing"?
By the same logic: if FTC thinks net neutrality is bad, it probably is...
Because FTC isn't the defendant. How would anyone share counter evidence to the plaintiff?
That's fine. You probably never played a data warehouse. No big deal, we all have our own areas mastered and gaps elsewhere.
surprised Spark isn't there
Nothing extra? You haven't read the article clearly
What do you think about Roblox and Minecraft then?
The case of Giphy is really absurd.
In some sense, it's no accessible just like Google and Facebook in China. Or you can say Tiktok does not operate inside China because there's another China specific version Douyin (from the same company).
> Java has Play
Is Play still (or ever was?) the go-to web framework for Java?
I'm really sick of this argument "companies don't want to follow the same rule in China". No they are not the same rules and it's not "don't want" but "can't". Take Yahoo for example, the formal CEO Jerry Yang lost his job as Yahoo China followed these "rules" back then to give email information of some dissent to Chinese government.
In China, when the government asks a company to do something, the company has no choice. When was the last time you heard US companies follow arbitrary ask of US government?
I miss VB too. It's amazing how simple and intuitive it was comparing to how we create UIs nowadays.
Ask any TikTok employee how many meetings they have each week with people from Beijing HQ...
Let me remind you that once upon a time a US company gave some email data to the authorities of China, the CEO of the company was sued in US and later resigned. That company was Yahoo!
1) In FB's own words:
https://about.fb.com/news/2022/02/meta-is-absolutely-not-thr... so mass media just put the word into FB's mouth
2) On "China didn't ban ...", that's the case for Google and Linkedin China, but it's actually a kind of "soft" ban that the cost to meet the regulatory requirements is too high to afford even for biggest companies in the world.
3) FB case was a bit different. It was never given any opportunity to operate in China, so FB didn't "chose" to leave. We would never know what FB would do if given the chance. Maybe leave all user data there inside the great wall, as Apple does in its special version of iCloud in China.
Then you try to use those 8 possibilities (if not all) in the next round to eliminate some or most of them to quickly narrow down the scope of guessing
Not sure if it's just me, I just feel MIT tech review has too many sponsored and political stuffs...
As if all other tech companies are too boring to talk about
