Yep! Might be a more common term among electricians.
The precipitation thing is actually pretty unintuitive. Go look up the actual definition and tell me if that's what you expected.
Yeah, and I was hoping that you could still look at high-level averaging over a country ("maybe the bad data will average out") but when I looked at a few hotspots it appears that those all came down to a couple uncalibrated-looking devices.
Not very useful or interesting in its current form, unfortunately.
You're missing a bit of political context.
That's... kind of the point. Catastrophic failures usually have non-technical contributory causes as well, and we ignore that at our peril.
Well, that and the reductions in funding.
More on the "other components" issue -- a lot of people have issues with some of the fermentable carbohydrates (e.g. fructans) in wheat, which also happen to be present in the other gluten-containing grains. "Have gas" is a bit of an understatement. For some people this can lead to cramps, vomiting, and other fairly severe digestive problems.
So people on the low-FODMAPs diet end up using "gluten free" as a convenient shorthand for "doesn't contain these particular grains".
Maybe! I expect a lot of animals construct narratives to make sense out of the world around them.
What's great about this is that the primary thing exposed (credit card info) is also one of the
least worrying things to have exposed, as a user.
You can just get a replacement credit card.
Since we know that essentially nobody is using homomorphic encryption, the original point stands.
Boy, people sure do love turning data points into stories.
So, completely ignoring the abusive CEO as an issue of its own, I think there's one very important aspect of AI usage that's already clear from the article:
« Workers describe an environment where employees have genuine concerns about security or being asked to develop security products with AI, but feel unable to voice them »
It's very hard to build reliable and secure products in a fearful environment. This sort of thing has come up in root cause analyses of disasters. We don't need to know whether Proton has defined "guardrails" for AI usage, or what the processes are like; there will be problems, gaps, and employees will be unable to raise those issues with management. That's all I need to know, really.
You can absolutely shake people out of their ways without being a raging asshole.
For the kind of end-to-end encrypted support they advertise? Tuta is the only one I know of.
Email more broadly? I can heartily recommend Fastmail.
I don't really send anything sensitive over email if I can help it. Signal is a much better choice.
Posting the CEO's own words seems pretty fair to the CEO.
Someone in the comments on a previous 404 article listed a few things -- nothing necessarily "cancellable" in its own right, but drawing a pattern:
https://www.404media.co/proton-to-re-interview-staff-about-a...
- Praising the Republican Party and endorsing a Trump appointee.
- Andy choosing a username with 88 in it (a common Nazi dogwhistle) but then claiming it had a different meaning.
- Sponsoring a far-right French YouTuber and claiming they had no idea.
Again, nothing hard and fast. But it meant I was not at all surprised to find out how fucked up the company is on the inside.
...no? That's just called being a crumple zone.
There have been a number of signs over the past few years that they are very much not the good guys.
Take a(nother) look at the post he linked to. Comments were broken previously, but they're showing up now.
Pyon indeed seems like a complete asshat.
No, HN has a braindead feature that autostrips certain words from titles.
New technology bears additional focus.
FYI, your site is blocking me for some reason. I'm just on a regular residential connection in the US, no VPN or whatever. Something's screwy in your WAF.
It didn't look like the usual Claude slop to me... but I also didn't find it readable at all.
That doesn't really clarify things much. Surely you can answer that question yourself?
I am very confused about this comment and this submission.
If you're using Firefox, hit Ctrl-Alt-r and it looks however you want it to.
It's worth it to someone.
I have to say, I'm not convinced those studies are legit.
I prefer the chaotic option of MITM-in-the-middle.
(Mallory-in-the-middle is OK too.)
