I have been unemployed for almost 3 years, exactly your situation. I had savings and told myself I would do something on my own but never did, I just goofed off the whole time. I went through periods of getting motived to do something but quickly fell off it again. I have been applying more steadily now but I feel it's too late, i have been without work for so long i think i am getting filtered out plus my experience isn't great. And i have little motivation to study for engineering roles because i am not good at leet code and many companies still do that.
Lately i have been setting a morning alarm and trying to do some workout immediately. get the body moving rather than just start the day goofing off. i also had success with setting an actual schedule with alerts, but unfortunately iOS is buggy and just stops alerting sometimes for my calendar events. the biggest thing is that you form a habit around goofing off and you need to break that habit. i would also recommend the app Cold Turkey, in fact writing this reminds me i need to install it on this mac because i keep using it to goof off on HN and reddit.
Anyone running Intel macbook because Homebrew dropped support for them because Apple dropped support for them. You can still use Homebrew but it means rebuilding from source. I downloaded uv recently and it took about 8 hours to fully install because it had to build llvm, uv, some other stuff all from source.
Over a decade ago i worked at a company with a BI tool that was exactly this, minus the AI of course. it was just PHP pages backed by embedded SQL built by a non engineer. anytime someone wanted a different slice of data, the person just copied an existing page and swapped out the sql and the column names. URL query string was used for the different parameters of the SQL statement, i forget if it was open to sql injection but it was an internal tool only. even after implementing a BI tool everyone still used the PHP pages because it was faster and easier to just bookmark the specific page you want with the data you wanted.
much like low code tools, most people dont want to mess with self serve BI. AI might help with that but i think the tool in the article opens the door for people creating slightly different versions of the same thing. also, claude is awful at visualizations. every one i see looks the same, crammed full of bad charts and too much text, poor color choices, and no real value in terms of story. still, this is an interesting implementation of that concept.
Second sentence form the article, "If vibecoding is what people say it is, the world should be drowning in vibecoded artifacts right now." My answer: it is. Maybe we don't have a bunch of photo editing apps but it sure seems like we have a lot of vibe coded commercial and non-commercial projects being created. If i have to see one more vibe coded agent harness I might actually lose it. And I wouldn't call it all slop
Isn't there still incentive because the data itself is valuable so attacks would continue?
Did you explore any of the libraries or frameworks that are meant to bootstrap a SaaS with all of the batteries included?
How are you dealing with porn verification laws? I have an idea for something porn related but it feels like there is a lot of red tape now that I don't want to deal with but I haven't done all that much research into it so I am probably wrong
My friend works in corporate accounting. He said his company is outsourcing a bunch of accounting functions and laying people off (I don't know the specifics). They are outsourcing to India and the outsourced company is already using AI for stuff compared to his company that isn't. He thinks many companies are going to outsource.
The linked Github seems to have the 2nd edition in the form of notebooks,
https://github.com/jakevdp/PythonDataScienceHandbook/blob/ma..., under the Using Code Examples section, "attribution usually includes the title, author, publisher, and ISBN. For example: "Python Data Science Handbook, 2nd edition, by Jake VanderPlas (O’Reilly). Copyright 2023..." compared to the OP's link which has "The Python Data Science Handbook by Jake VanderPlas (O’Reilly). Copyright 2016..."
i am american and think "next best thing" means second best. maybe "next big thing" would be better but is a bit generic
Potential game - click a random date and decide if the content is from 2024 or not. I really like "Web 2.0 is a bubble for 3 reasons" from OP's link. I feel like there was a time when that same post applied to Web 3.0 showed up every week on HN.
Check out this Reddit comment (not mine)

Quote: "Multiple sensor versions apparently. I checked we haven't received a sensor update since the 13th so it must be something else they're updating to cause it.
So much for our Sensor Update Policies avoiding things like this..."
Edit to add: Based on the Reddit comment and this thread, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41004103, I would put this on CrowdStrike doing something that was unavoidable by the customer (CrowdStrike could have avoided this). But maybe there are some customer settings that could have prevented this.
Same thing happens to me except it's Sophia (I am a dude)
El Pais looks to be a Spanish paper. So this might just be different translations and they were deciding how to quote with those translations.
Yes! Incredibly annoying. Just checked my iPad and I had 2 notification markers or whatever they are called (the number on the Settings app icon) telling me about "special offers" since I recently purchased an iPhone and one to set up Apple Pay. On my Mac when I wasn't signed into iCloud I would get occasional popups telling me to sign in. Thanks Tim Apple
Someone mistyped a number somewhere and now my phone number is associated with a random person. Every election cycle I start getting texts that I never consented to and I have no recourse because it's always a different number and seemingly different organization sending the texts.
Note sure what you mean with copying the Windows approach, but that line is talking about expenses. It says that part of the increase in expenses was due to Apple spending more on advertising their products. I don't think there is a concern with Apple spending more on advertising.
Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones for $228 (normally $350) at pretty much every store (Sony, Amazon, Best Buy, etc). Just got them and they are great but I never had wireless headphones. They do take 10-20 seconds to connect to my iPad, but that might be because they are also set up with my phone.
I considered the newer version but the reviews made it seem like it wasn't a huge upgrade and in some ways a downgrade, like the newer version doesn't fold to a smaller size.
I love how this got 4 different answers.
I still use TV Guide to check what is on for sports, but only a few times a month. I don't normally watch TV and I just have an antenna directly hooked up to my TV. TV Guide is faster than the guide on my TV and I can look beyond the next hour.
I recently came across this series on Coursera, Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking Specialization:
https://www.coursera.org/specializations/logic-critical-thin...I haven't started yet, but the syllabus for each course seemed interesting and covers off on the thinking part. You can take the classes for free if you audit them though the website throws the payment option at you.
I had a physical version of this a couple of decades ago as a kid. I can find similar products searching for "perpetual calendar". The one I had included a slider to select the month. It also had the day of the week at the top and a small circular peg to place over each day.
I worked at a company that had similar situations, so here are some thoughts.
Make sure you really understand what it is they want and how they will use your product. Our company would speak with companies and it turned out that our service wasn't exactly what they wanted, it just sounded like what they wanted. Basically the value prop wasn't understood. Or they liked our features, but really wanted a competitor feature we didn't have. In these cases we spent time across multiple teams trying to close these deals and it led to nothing.
Also, make sure you really understand all of their requirements. We spent a bunch of time speaking with one company, spent time during a trial to impress them, then at the end it didn't close because they wanted us to have a specific industry certification that we didn't have and weren't planning on obtaining. They went with a competitor.
Another problem we would run into is that we would trial with a company, then whoever our contact was would quit. Then whoever replaced them either didn't think our service was needed, or just couldn't continue speaking with us because they had to get settled into their new role.
Pricing was also an issue sometimes. Make sure you speak about it upfront. Again, we had companies not close because pricing came up at the end and they didn't want to pay.
Personally I felt like we spent too much time chasing big companies because the business side always thought closing one would open many doors. We did close some big companies and the revenue was good, but it never really led to more business.
What is the purpose of each notebook?
This is the same in the US based on my experience
This is light on details. Blizzard had their own channel up and was playing the music. This clip is from Twitch's channel. Lots of streamers were restreaming the event and right before this performance, there was a message that said, "The upcoming musical performance is subject to copyright protection by the applicable copyright holder." I imagine only Blizzard themselves had the rights to stream it. You can watch it on Blizzard's channel
