Re:I Returned My iPhone Duo on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:44AM (#50301669)
I love mine. The build quality is excellent. The two screens are useful in different environments or for different tasks - quick glance at a message vs reading a book. The large screen especially is a great replacement for my Kindle. Now all I carry for phone calls, photography, music, reading and work (T3 remote to my Mac mini at home) is this one device. Combined with a good dictation software like Aqua Voice it’s a jack off all trades for me. Not returning it anytime soon :)
Why not publish this worldwide? Unavailable in the Germany AppStore.

How is a majority vote (of both states and represented population) and a parliamentary vote undemocratic?
Looks pretty! But how is this any different from claude.ai/code (web)?
Arc Browser does that already, also for downloaded files. Looks neat.

I guess it's good to join forces on this. However, I really hope the Texts app on Mac will survive this merge as it is lightyears ahead of the UI insult that Beeper is. I migrated away from Beeper to get rid of the ugly interface and in order to not depend on bridges on some server somewhere (yes, I can host them myself, but who wants to?) anymore.
Re:Ask HN: Where do you get your health news? on Sunday November 05, 2023 @02:47AM (#38149163)
I quite like examine.com for a seemingly independent “audit” of health- and supplement-related data. It’s not perfect but the database of knowledge is growing and their business model seems more aligned with my interests than with those groups often funding biased research.
It’s very hard to get the permission to run diesel generators for anything else than backup power here. And even then, it needs to be timed very precisely to be in line with regulations.
Re:The world’s most liveable cities in 2023 on Thursday June 22, 2023 @02:10AM (#36428537)
Burning cars on the street would sure affect the livability in my neighborhood. The French are passionate people when protesting. And they protest a lot. Makes sense to me to me to mention it. It’s not about the right to assemble, otherwise I’m sure Hong Kong would be on the first spot on the list.
Having hired dozens of developers in Berlin over the last 10 years, I can confirm that these numbers look awfully low, at least for any major city in Germany. Munich should be even higher, Hamburg comparable to Berlin. 80k max is maybe for a mid level dev, surely not for anyone considered senior. Or I always overpaid, but then salaries should be related to the contribution to the overall success, not on the average of whatever other companies, so no hard feelings here.

Re:Ask HN: Why are there no 5G USB-C dongles for laptops? on Wednesday May 03, 2023 @04:52AM (#35799731)
I’ve been looking for the same to no avail. I’d buy one for my MacBook in an instant but the only things available in Germany are bulky hotspot devices with built-in batteries for 300-700€.
You can get a PR faster (3y) if you’re here on a blue card (which is likely true for all non-EU tech workers).

Universities are not all free for non-EU citizens and some programs (generally English-speaking) Masters are (properly, not the 400€) paid for citizens and non-citizens alike.

A permanent residency (PR) in Berlin does not require German language skills anymore. Maybe this is official or just established practice but regardless, there’a no reason not to have your PR if you qualify otherwise.
The average outage time per year in Germany, as far as I remember, is below 2min. The uptime of my non-USV-backed server at home supports that, but that’s only anecdotal data.
Re:Kagi: A Premium Search Engine on Friday January 07, 2022 @03:14AM (#29836416)
Same here, I can't wait for an alternative with actually useful search results and good filters. Search is one product I use often every day but I'm stuck with either privacy-respecting options that don't yield useful results, Bing-themes or Google, which used to produce decent results but increasingly is just full of search spam. Good luck with this, I'm happy to pay!
Sam is doing an awesome job. On an M1 mac, the official dropbox client is a total no-go from a resource usage point of view. Maestral is a lifesaver for me/my memory usage.
