GraphQL is less complicated than querying dozens of interdependent REST queries.
Well they don’t need Reddit to see who is seeding. But posting to Reddit can easily be done through Tor or proxies.
I assume the pirates are using Tor or a proxy anyway though?
Re:Figure out who's leaving the company: dump, diff, repeat on Friday February 09, 2024 @08:39AM (#39314731)
I once discovered that a very large org had AD configured in such a way that you could see “last seen at” timestamp for everyone profile in the company.

It would have been trivial to track everyone’s hours using this, which would likely have been unpopular.

Why do we need a templating language at all? Syntax is inferior to data.
Re:Python types have an expectations problem on Monday January 29, 2024 @03:26PM (#39182010)
But if x is an int, the result is an int

If x is a list, the result is a list

I don’t think that the type system can describe this.

You probably should have your dog belted in to a chest harness.

Check your insurance policy.

The hardware is better because of RnD, funded by high margins due to software lock-in. Not sure why people struggle to see the connection here.
Re:Fossil Is Quitting Smartwatches on Saturday January 27, 2024 @04:04AM (#39153920)
How would most things work on such a small screen?

I think the Apple Watch will become increasingly standalone.

Re:A Love Letter to Intellectualism on Saturday January 27, 2024 @03:30AM (#39153767)
There was also much more low hanging fruit back then. Making significant contributions to a field only required scratching the surface.
This is the problem. Microsoft does not have a strong product function in Windows so no one can push back on this bullshit in the first place.
I once would have agreed with you, but the advertisements and pushiness in Windows are simply unacceptable at this point.
Telegraph readers skew wealthy so probably own a private vegetable patch.
Re:Embracing Common Lisp in the Modern World on Thursday January 25, 2024 @03:09AM (#39127343)
How would they define lisp?

To me Lisp means programs in list syntax with prefix notation.

Re:Programming Language Checklist (2011) on Wednesday January 24, 2024 @10:08AM (#39118194)
To me what’s missing is a functional programming language that is statically typed and has an extreme emphasis on performance. C++ meets Haskell, but not terrible.
Re:Programming Language Checklist (2011) on Wednesday January 24, 2024 @10:05AM (#39118157)
Zig, Odin and Jai are the main contenders.

I don’t think backward C compatibility is a good idea, since the C syntax has issues. Instead a transpilation tool from C could be built.

Re:Programming Language Checklist (2011) on Wednesday January 24, 2024 @03:13AM (#39114887)
C# is more like Java than C++
Re:Programming Language Checklist (2011) on Wednesday January 24, 2024 @03:08AM (#39114857)
Quite funny, but I want people to advance the state of the art.

Does C++ / Java / Python really represent the high water mark of programming languages? I sure hope not…

Exclusivity made everyone think so. Groundbreaking marketing, for a webmail service.
Re:The Case for Rust in the base system on Sunday January 21, 2024 @03:11PM (#39082513)
What if Rust compiled to C? Wouldn’t that be a good way to support long tail platforms with low effort?
Re:Boehm-Demers-Weiser conservative C/C++ Garbage Collector on Sunday January 21, 2024 @02:17PM (#39081866)
Immutable structures cannot be cyclical. Maybe I’m missing something?
Re:Vistex CEO Sanjay Shah dies on stage after freak accident on Sunday January 21, 2024 @04:13AM (#39076896)
No less of a disgrace than if it happened to an entry level employee.
Re:The quiet death of Ello's big dreams on Saturday January 20, 2024 @03:40AM (#39065744)
Elon could have bought 4chan and saved himself a bunch of time and money.
Wow, you could be describing me at 9. I even did the pages of design drawings all over the place!

what worked for me is to start with Game Maker from YoYo Games.

You can get started with drag- and-drop GUI blocks, but eventually move to a Basic-like scripting language. You can only make simple games but it is powerful enough for commercial 2D projects. Hotline Miami was made in Game Maker, for example.

Do not embark on managing a project for him!

The scope will be impossible and lead to disappointment. Instead, try to be a guide through tutorials and help if he gets stuck on a specific problem. Interest will wane in a specific idea and he will hop to a new one. This is fine, because the objective is to learn to have fun. Be a teacher not a producer.

This was my gateway to “real” programming, CompSci and a career.

Re:OpenAI is working with the US military now on Wednesday January 17, 2024 @05:03PM (#39034161)
USA is a large closed economy. China is a large open economy. I’m simplifying, but the bottom line is China definitely doesn’t want a Cold War scenario.
This is why I’m sympathetic to direct action. What on earth else can young people do?

But boomers can only think about being made late for work

Is there good evidence behind this view? I don’t mean to be rude, but I’ve only seen it from reactionary commentators and right-leaning news outlets.
Drives me mad when people just fling ChatGPT responses over the wall and expect me to do the quality control.

If that’s all you bring to the table… well, I can use ChatGPT myself and we can save on head count.

Re:The golden age of Kotlin and its uncertain future on Thursday January 11, 2024 @02:35AM (#38948958)
Syntax may be overrated but expressiveness is not.
Re:Netflix never used its $1M algorithm (2012) on Thursday January 11, 2024 @02:12AM (#38948819)
A bit like gyms, then.

Maybe Netflix should add loads of learning content so people feel good about their sub.
