Couldn't resist. A little listening while reading. Ott - Adrift In Hilbert Space. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Zn_XuEdYs&list=RDo6Zn_XuEd...
Re:I'm Tired of Being on the Network on Friday September 25, 2026 @10:26AM (#49845156)
The article started off good and I followed it with concurrence. Then he took a turn and went off on a tangent and never returned. He got sucked in to his own tech bubble. I see what he's saying but make those hard choices and draw your own line. I don't have any social media accounts, streaming services and I don't watch TV except for the occasional college game I get online or through OTA. If you don't want to be trapped in it, then just remove it from you life. I don't get all the app update notifications as I'm on Graphene OS and have all notifications turned off unless it's from someone in my address book. The phone is convenient and a useful too but you don't have to be a slave to it or the buzz, it's a choice.
Re:Sony Deletes 551 Movies PlayStation Owners Paid For on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @11:38AM (#48748653)
Not the first time and not going to be the last. Unless you can download it to hardware you completely own and can make a backup, it's not really yours. Online purchases I can get on with, like Bandcamp are pretty good. I bought the new Globular album on CD and it took 10 days to get to me from the UK. I also had access to high quality downloads. That works, these other models do not.
Gimp is unintuitive for a lot of people including myself. I've tried it for years and just don't like the way it works. Forcing people to do it your way is not always the best way. This is an option, it's not forced on anyone and it's great for those that want to transition. People have requested it for years.
A docker release would be great. Looks like a more modern version of ManyNotes.
Re:This Month in Ladybird - April 2026 on Sunday May 03, 2026 @09:14AM (#47996652)
This is great. I'm building a site that has JavaScript but is fully functional without it, this would be fun to see how it renders it. I use htmx, AlpineJS and Vanilla JS just for additional help for users with forms and search but works fine without it. Thanks for sharing this.

I will recompile ladybird too. Last time it had made great progress but was no where near read for regular use.

Re:PiCore - Raspberry Pi Port of Tiny Core Linux on Wednesday April 15, 2026 @10:23PM (#47787925)
I added rsgain to piCorePlayer. Should be in the latest repository. Great utility IMO.
Re:Three hundred synths, 3 hardware projects, and one app on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @08:26AM (#47674203)
Thanks! I have never heard of it. Need to buy my son a new ipad so I can use this with his old one.
Re:Steam on Linux Use Skyrocketed Above 5% in March on Thursday April 02, 2026 @08:51AM (#47613779)
If you're coming from photoshop then PhotoGIMP is a good patch for gimp. I never understood why GIMP just didn't take this approach to begin with or at least make it a built in option.

Have you checked out Ladybird, it's independent.
Re:I'm OK being left behind, thanks on Friday March 20, 2026 @11:13AM (#47455766)
Solid piece, very wise. AI is fun but where I find it useful with code is first writing more thorough comments and then writing the base of your tests.

Writing the actual code that's efficient is iffy at times and you better know the language well or you'll get yourself in trouble. I've watched AI make my code more complex and harder to read. I've seen it put an import in a loop. It's removed the walrus operator because it doesn't seem to understand it. It's used older libraries or built-ins that are no longer supported. It's still fun and does save me some time with certain things but I don't want to vibe code much because it removes the joy out of what you're doing.

Re:Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years? on Friday March 20, 2026 @11:01AM (#47455570)
Wayland is the future and yes it took some time but I've been using it for a while. Sure there are annoyances but nothing terrible.

People complained about pipewire and wireplumber too, but they're fantastic. It's great in the DAW. It just takes a long time to get everything compatible.

Re:Astral to Join OpenAI on Thursday March 19, 2026 @11:24AM (#47441070)
UV, Ruff, and Ty are all very good things, hopefully that doesn't change and gets better.
Re:Give Django your time and money, not your tokens on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @11:40AM (#47414214)
Thank you. django-dramatiq has been fantastic.
Using VSCodium I was having issues with python type checkers for quite a while. I did the basedpyright thing for a while but that was painful. It's a bit too based for me, and I'm not sure i'd call it based. Right now I have uv, ruff, and ty and I'm happy with it. It's super easy to update and super fast. I didn't realize the coverage wasn't as good as some others but I still like it. I may have to try pyrefly. Never heard of it until this post, so thank you.
Re:What makes Intel Optane stand out (2023) on Sunday March 15, 2026 @12:42PM (#47389099)
Sure, they were expensive but they have great endurance and sustained read and write speeds. I use one in my car for camera recordings. I had gone through several other drives but this one has been going on 3 or 4 years now without issue. I have a couple more in use too. It's a shame this tech is going away because it's excellent.
Re:Ask HN: How to Be Alone? on Monday March 09, 2026 @11:37AM (#47310471)
Start doing daily outdoor walks or runs, whatever you prefer. Spend more time outdoors and away from noise if you can (easy for me to say as I live on the edge of a forest). Join some hiking clubs, you'll meet all kinds of interesting people. Learn to meditate and take some breathing exercise classes (locally or online) and get off the medications as quickly as you can.
