News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

My, my, how low we have sunk. It used to be "I won't jump into the comment section without first reading the article", now it's "I won't read the article without first reading (and possibly engaging in) the comment section". Shame.

Also, how is this headline click-bait? If anything, it's anti-clickbait, dull, matter-of-factly, and not really that inviting.

Re:Overgrown, when plants invade your abandoned tabs on Monday October 26, 2026 @07:21AM (#50241960)
Wow, I start to feel bad whenever I get above maybe 10-15. I can't imagine what it must look like inside your head if you're ok with 12k. :)
Maybe they started deleting everything, before disabling their accounts? One can but hope. :)
It's worse. Even if you talk to them, explain in detail why and how Meta and their products are evil, they will just nod, frown, go "yeah, that's serious, someone should do something", and then they will turn around, check their Whatsapp messages and post a story on Instagram about their lunch.
Re:Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:06AM (#50163255)
The flying drone is more agile, as well as moving faster and less predictably. More difficult to hit than a ground vehicle.
Your comment is halfway towards shameless whataboutism, but I'll bite.

The huge difference here is that for these billionaires, everybody else is a "far away consequence". It's as if I kept tossing my garbage into my direct neighbor's window and flushing my toilet into their kitchen sink.

It can always be more down, and people can always panic more.
Yes, but me playing cookie clicker (or fortnite, or whatever, competitive tic-tac-toe) does not bring with itself suffering and poverty for millions of others. Whereas them chasing their virtual money high score ruins societies.

They are all psychopaths, devoid of normal human emotions.

Because admitting there are problems causes the stock market to go down.

Also the paths in the snow that are gradually disappearing when left unused.
...and have it fail spectacularly when deployed in an environment that requires reliability performance and high availability. Yes, I honestly can't wait to see those horror comedies unfold, but hopefully far away from me. :)
Re:Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @07:37AM (#49891490)
From the screenshot on the project website, it seems "@serv.er" is part of any remote nickname, so I'm assuming the nicks are in per-server namespaces, which prevents any nick collisions.

Although it must wreak havoc on many IRC clients, since the @ sign has a very specific meaning in the IRC protocol. :)

Re:Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC on Monday September 28, 2026 @09:59AM (#49878083)
This has been an issue for as long as IRC itself has existed. There are solutions to resolve such "netsplits" and "netjoins", but they all rely on the servers in the network being trusted and not malicious.

With Parley, where anyone can bring their own instance, and they are not guaranteed to not to be malicious, that could be an interesting issue to solve.

Re:There are no "rogue" AI agents on Sunday September 27, 2026 @04:03PM (#49870290)
Forget russia, we have emboldened, determined and dangerous fascist USA already to worry about.
Are we, though? Going to want to scale this up, I mean.

Unless economic systems around the world change significantly very soon, this AI replacement you so cavalierly mention would cause significant portion of human population to reach poverty, causing much unrest and mass deaths.

Re:Goodbye Google on Friday September 25, 2026 @03:26AM (#49841281)
How much of what you list has been "democratized"? Apart from the forum, and probably the browser, nothing. And both of those things are of questionable goodness to humanity.
Re:Goodbye Google on Friday September 25, 2026 @03:23AM (#49841255)
That depends on your definition of winning. Some of us couldn't give a rat's ass about speed, and for me Chrome lost because it's not an user agent (as in agent working for me, the user) anymore, it's a Google agent (as in working for Google to spy on me, the user).
Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Friday September 25, 2026 @02:59AM (#49841082)
Why would Fdroid do that? They even package and offer some of these alternate clients in their own repository.
Re:Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop on Thursday September 24, 2026 @07:21AM (#49829076)
KDE Connect is a great program in this regard, allowing you to share all kinds of things, including contacts or clipboard contents, between connected devices.
Re:Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @05:29AM (#49813551)
I suspect that at the time they had to make a decision, Rocky Linux was not in good enough state, so they went with Debian, and now they already standardized around Debian, so no need to change.
Re:ZuckOff Know when a camera is in the room on Monday September 21, 2026 @07:31AM (#49785874)
I'm guessing it's not even aware of it. The billionaires all live in their own reality.
Re:Replacing Pull Requests with Delta on Friday September 18, 2026 @08:43AM (#49753608)
That's like not putting protective guardrail on a staircase, and instead having first aid kits and emergency phone number on hand. In other words, dumb and irresponsible. Possibly illegal, depending on the case.
Re:Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust on Thursday September 17, 2026 @03:53AM (#49737719)
It's become so bad that even quality history youtube channels are frequently using euphemisms like "moustache-man" instead of just saying "Hitler", to avoid their videos being buried by The Algorithm, and therefore cut severely into their viewership.
Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @06:30PM (#49733940)
If you ask LLM to code something for you, and you then work on the code, then yes, there is partial ownership. Just like if you had asked another, maybe junior, developer to write a piece of code, and then you helped them make it better.
Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @02:53PM (#49731332)
That's just it. you didn't "build so much", you didn't build anything. You asked someone (or something) to build it for you.

How can people look at LLM-generated code and think "this is mine, I made this" is beyond me.

Re:Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @02:38PM (#49731133)
I would immediately stand up and walk out of there. That's my time you're wasting!
Re:Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:06AM (#49728213)
Neat, how can I turn it off?
Re:Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap on Saturday September 12, 2026 @06:48PM (#49678022)
After you create an OSM account, there is also https://maproulette.org, which has tons of little tasks to fix, grouped into challenges, and many of them can be done using just the aerial photos, from the comfort of your seat.

Then there is also mapping for humanitarian purposes, https://tasks.hotosm.org/, which has mapping projects prepared by disaster response teams, and you can help by updating maps of areas recently affected by disasters. E.g. recently there was a lot of mapping in the area hit by the August river flood in Nepal.

Re:Mistral raises €3B on Thursday September 10, 2026 @05:55AM (#49641093)
We're still deep in the research and exploration phase, who knows what will huge oodles of compute be useful for in the end? Maybe it will end up being used by the owning corporation or local nation state, against similar amount of compute wielded by another corporation or nation state.

After all, what else than governments and corporations will be left after the rest of us poors will inevitably be priced out of the economy?

Re:On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:21AM (#49625354)
Yes, last night we all voted and decided to move to its successor RSB instead.
