Russia, almost certainly, used Wikileaks to dump hacked documents in order to influence the 2016 election. The CIA is also accused of hack and dump operations more recently -- welcome to the 21st century.
Re:Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020? on Tuesday February 04, 2020 @12:24PM (#22238252)
I've been reading "Sleeping on the Wing" on and off recently -- I think it's meant more as an intro for older school kids but I've never read poetry outside of school and it's been an interesting overview of different poets and styles.
Do you find it similarly interesting that a 5 year old account with 3 other posts and a few comments posted a 1.5 year old article and managed to get over 300 upvotes on it?
Works at my local Safeway, as of yesterday. There was a period of time over a year ago during which Jenny's number didn't work at a different Safeway but it's been reliable at this one, so far.
Your vague plan of just stop corporate lobbying immediately fails because the negative incentives for someone in congress vastly outweighs the positive.
Re:Ask HN: How do you handle logging? on Wednesday August 28, 2019 @05:20PM (#20824080)
We're in the middle of a cloud migration, but in our dockerized environment we're sending logs directly from stdout to cloudwatch using Docker's cloudwatch plugin.

In our legacy environment we're writing to files and sending them up to cloudwatch using awslogs.

Cloudwatch is kind of ass for logging, but they added insights somewhat recently; it upgraded cloudwatch logs from being unusable to just being a pain in the ass to use.

This works for us so far because it's super simple and we don't have a major need for log analytics, just the occasional production debugging session.

I did a PoC for fluentd + logdna/logz/etc and that also seemed to work pretty well.

This is just cheap twitter advertising -- the only thing different about this(from Wendy's twitter advertising) is that Amazon is harnessing Twitter's outrage lust to get more eyeballs on their ambassador's nice words and it looks like it works.

Don't interact with advertisements, folks.

It is quite amazing that different situations are different.
There's no such thing as a free speech absolutist and YouTube was never a free speech platform.

I've used both and there isn't really a reason to pick one over the other.
And then there are the people who delude themselves into thinking privacy will save them from governments.
I have been using it for a little over 2 years (6p and refurb Pixel XL) and it's been fine. Though I haven't had to contact support...

Re:Summary of the Amazon S3 Service Disruption on Thursday March 02, 2017 @01:31PM (#13776788)
Database backups, puppet modules, a couple low traffic static sites, assets for one of our projects.
I work at an established company and most of our apps are still deployed with RPM and puppet.

For our dockerized services we use Nomad internally and for a different product we've built in AWS we're using Elastic Beanstalk with all of the resources defined in terraform.

We use jenkins to manage the CI/CD for each method.

It's insultingly sexist to suggest that 51% of the population should finally have representation in the highest office in America?
Re:Paris Shootings and Explosions Kill Over 100, Police Say on Friday November 13, 2015 @11:16PM (#10564429)
I, and I hope most others, lay blame at the feet of those who committed the act. I(a nobody) think I've been too quiet about defending our Muslim friends from being lumped in with bad people just because you share a religion.

I don't know many Muslims and it's just too easy to let bigoted remarks go, but this attack feels like it could really bring out the worst in reactionary people. So stay safe and know at least one person has your back.

Re:14-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Bringing Homemade Clock to School on Wednesday September 16, 2015 @12:29PM (#10227806)
Right, but this is a child who is an American citizen, not a Saudi who's been in the country for a few months.

I mean, I can't imagine what kind of monster automatically jumps to bomb when a kid makes a clock. Is that how we want to live, constantly being suspicious of everyone different?

Re:Why Docker Is Not Yet Succeeding Widely in Production on Tuesday July 28, 2015 @12:00PM (#9962475)
I'd really love to include docker in our puppet testing framework, so we can do actual meaningful tests without deploying to real environments.

But, dealing with all of the problems of deploying docker to production doesn't look worth the time investment for a medium sized company IMO(we're at ~1700 vms)

It's also possible that she murdered 14 children, but it's all conjecture unless an actual reason is released.
I guess people take their pointless internet comments way too seriously.

This is why I use Lastpass.

Re:I quit the tech industry on Wednesday June 10, 2015 @08:30PM (#9696633)
You should definitely do what makes you happy.

However, the blog post seems a bit braggy. A lot of us experience the same things, but we don't have a safety net(other than the gubmit I guess), it breeds jealousy. If I were in the same situation I would have left off the part about cashing out and paying the mortgage and not created a patreon without something to back it up immediately.

It would have been better if it just listed the reasons you're leaving and maybe some insight into how you might fix some problems.

> who don't actually understand technology work and have different priorities than I do

I'm no expert or anything, but I expect this is pretty much the same in any industry. People really don't care about your work until they need something or you're blocking them.

Re:It's the Future on Tuesday June 09, 2015 @07:49PM (#9689285)
That's great if it's just you and you don't care about your site breaking because you didn't test your code outside of your Mac.

More users, more developers, larger sites require more than just Jim Bob installing CentOS and tomcat on a pizza box.

It doesn't always require Docker + this tech or that tech, but you will have to put some automation in place.

Re:Why can’t we read anymore? on Monday April 27, 2015 @11:04AM (#9446725)
Not saying you have it, but this is a common symptom of ADHD.

I'd recommend the book Driven to Distraction, it's pretty informative!

Re:Georgia Tech Student Indicted in UGA Hack on Monday January 05, 2015 @05:53PM (#8841799)
I sat next to a guy at a bar after that happened(worked for the company that was going to put it back up, I think) and he said the guy who got it down just unbolted it and used some rope to lower it down. Didn't seem very complex.

He then put it in his own truck and drove off, so he was pretty quickly caught.
