Re:Agentic Coding Recommendations on Friday June 13, 2025 @05:28AM (#44267033)
I have tried both, and aider is far less able when it comes to navigating your codebase, and self driving investigation. You are very involved in context management with aider, whereas claude code can use cli commands to do a lot of things itself.
Re:Rest in Peace Mikeal Rogers on Tuesday June 10, 2025 @04:38PM (#44241214)
Shit, never expected to see an announcement that a friend had died through HN. Learned a lot from you Mikeal, you will be missed.
Re:Designing Electronics That Work on Wednesday March 19, 2025 @02:57AM (#43408951)
Apparently the ebook has “sold out” so this is just marketing for the new paid ebook preorders.
What is propaganda? I was asking for a proper carbon model, not a link to an opinion piece.
Thats not really what I asked.

But in this situation would you not be better off taxing the soy imports and fining waste outflow?

Are there any reliable numbers on the holistic impact of ruminants? All of the carbon they emit came from the atmosphere via their plant diets, and a huge volume of that carbon is sequestered in the soil via their excrement. Ruminants help the soil, as opposed to modern agriculture which is largely reliant on fossil fuel derived fertilizer.

I have yet to see a paper that models this. Most of the estimates are purely based on output, which seems disingenuous at best.

Re:Live Map of Swiss Trains on Saturday January 06, 2024 @12:40PM (#38893377)
Looking at this from a swiss train. It seems to be 10-15 minutes out of date compared to GPS.
Re:Philips Hue will soon force users to create an account on Thursday September 21, 2023 @01:30PM (#37600988)
Does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement bridge that works with home assistant? It seems I’ll be throwing out the hue bridge and never buying a phillips product again.
Re:Bicyclists Deserve the Right to Free Movement on Wednesday August 30, 2023 @12:52PM (#37325003)

Re:Dropbox telemetry can't be disabled on Thursday April 27, 2023 @06:52AM (#35726150)
I'd love to be able to get rid of it completely, but I don't know of a good solution for syncing files to an iOS device from a linux machine.

Recommendations very welcome!

The SCD40 series is a pain to calibrate - it will drift out of calibration unless it's left outside at some points. It's not ideal for consumer electronics.
Where are you shopping? It’s not even close to that at migros.
Re:Ask HN: Is Vim still worth learning? on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @06:50AM (#33967623)
I don't think that's true. There are precious few UI guidelines that persist, and GUI design has been on the forefront of many fads. Looking at the touch-first UI of today, I have very little confidence that a GUI will look anything like it does now in 10 years.

Meanwhile, I can use vim over ssh from an iPad if I need to - my tools have come with me.

Re:Ask HN: Is Vim still worth learning? on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @05:59AM (#33967157)
Yes definitely. Vim will be around for the rest of your career, long after VSCode or other IDE's have come and gone. Investing in tools and workflows that are properly open source, and have serious longevity has a big payoff.
Re:The value of owning more books than you can read (2018) on Monday August 15, 2022 @06:23AM (#32467893)
At that scale you might solve the carbon sequestration problem
Re:Essential Climbing Knots on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @03:59AM (#32409005)
Definitely, it’s such a satisfying knot to tie too. And after that perhaps the figure 8 on 2 bights (bunny ears).

But then we are into the weeds…

Re:Essential Climbing Knots on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @03:36AM (#32408825)
These are decent for climbing, but for the rest of life you also want the bowline, which is easy to untie after being loaded.

Ring bend should only really be used for webbing.

So what if the company you work for requires github?
Re:French mayor demands €15,000 fee to climb Mont Blanc on Friday August 05, 2022 @11:25AM (#32357491)
If they can't manage to get people to be well equipped before tackling the peak, what are the chances they are going to be able to enforce a permitting system?

Honestly, as someone that has climbed Mont Blanc twice, what is necessary is not more red tape, but to actually enforce the current equipment rules at the Gouter. And based on the importance that mountaineering brings to the area, it wouldn't hurt to go and knock down the loose rock in the Gouter couloir.

Re:Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2022) on Tuesday August 02, 2022 @09:26AM (#32318183)

    Location: Zürich, Switzerland
Remote: Strongly preferred, CET or similar.
    Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: Generalist, so whatever is necessary for the job at hand. Rust, javascript, typescript, python, golang, etc etc...
    Résumé/CV: https://peterbraden.co.uk/resume/
    Email: [email protected]
I'm looking for a full time role as either a full-stack developer, or a software team lead / manager.

I have 15 years of SWE experience, primarily with front-end development, but also backend, management and product management. I like to solve problems, so I'm more motivated by the goal than the tools at hand.

Re:Eating meat is good, says the philosopher on Thursday July 28, 2022 @11:55AM (#32266051)
Actually the article is asking whether a good but curtailed life is better than no life at all. Which is a more interesting question.
Re:Building a fast all-SSD NAS on a budget on Thursday July 28, 2022 @02:28AM (#32261075)
What do you use to mount this on a mac? My bottleneck with my NAS is the atrocious speeds I get over samba or NFS, and even after spending a ton of time messing with the configs, I can’t get more than sluggish speeds.

Re:Jennifer Egan's Fiction and Visions of the Future on Friday June 24, 2022 @11:26AM (#31863652)
Finished Candy House recently and found it fairly mediocre. She seems to prefer writing about people than thinking through the consequences of the technology she introduced, and as a result, the Sci-Fi aspects feel awkwardly bolted on to the story, rather than having any real consequences to the people in it.
But all of this caution is negated by feeding cattle antibiotics as a matter of process on feedlots.
Re:Show HN: Personal AI Writing Assistant for Mac on Thursday June 09, 2022 @07:06AM (#31679752)
This seems to violate many of the OpenAI release guidelines (I am currently working on guiding a project through them, so am painfully aware of their stringency).

Notably it:

- Anthropomorphises the AI agent

- Claims 'actual' intelligence

Re:Breaking PCBs for Science on Wednesday April 06, 2022 @03:26AM (#30929395)
Bleh, Imperial measurements (and how confusing is it to refer to ‘mils’) and the conclusions are hidden away in a PDF.

Not a great read.

Re:Ask HN: When did 7 interviews become “normal”? on Monday April 04, 2022 @12:28PM (#30908550)
Maybe better to look at the definition of asian than white, Asia includes the subcontinent.
