Re:Vibe Engineering on Wednesday October 08, 2025 @06:54AM (#45514652)
Willison has an impressive record for coining terms. But feel like he may have missed it here. In the context, 'engineering' doesn't feel that different to 'coding'. The sloppy sounding part is 'vibe' and that's not been removed.

Remember the EU started as the EEC. More feature creep in realm of transnational governance.
Re:Changes at Basecamp on Saturday May 01, 2021 @07:30AM (#27005386)
I hope it works out for Basecamp. It is simply not ok to allow anxious or bitter people to be wearing each other out with political beliefs when they are being paid well to do a job. The twitter parade of martyr complexes is predictable but it is disappointing that so much talent has lost perspective on what professional conduct looks like in a workplace.
Re:WhatWG: Proposal – Update XPath to at least v2.0 on Tuesday October 13, 2020 @11:40AM (#24766634)
Agreed. I find it rather alarming that an influential member of the Chrome team is talking like this. All our e2e test suites are built around Chrome and XPath because of its expanded abilities over CSS

Re:Brexit Deal Fails in Parliament on Wednesday January 16, 2019 @06:43AM (#18919992)
Everyone has a plan right now in the UK parliament. Probably over half of parliament is hoping to push the UK into a 'cancel Brexit' scenario, despite claiming they respect the referendum result. Possibly a third of parliament have given up on the prospect of a reasonable deal with the EU and are holding out for a no-deal WTO exit. A minority are still seeking a last-minute deal that everyone can agree on.

It has always been my belief that a good trade deal between the UK and the EU is only possible if the UK is actually willing to go no-deal WTO first. Simply because the EU never concedes anything in good faith when it comes to negotiations.

Really? Surely this claim would require the sequencing of the T-Rex genome, which I'm guessing is an impossibility.

Guitologist channel on YouTube is great for walkthrough amp repairs and conversions
Angular 2 in beta made bold claims about being 'production ready' which reads 'almost done', it was frustrating just how long it then took to become what I would consider production ready.

I consider Angular 4 the first release to produce just about acceptable sized app bundle. On the whole though it's a very ambitious project and I think it will be increasingly hard to ignore, we've currently no intention of changing framework.

Re:Brexit court defeat for UK government on Thursday November 03, 2016 @06:25PM (#12868571)
I wouldn't. Overturning a high turnout national referendum result would probably result in violent riots.
Re:Why Are the Highly Educated So Liberal? on Friday June 03, 2016 @06:50AM (#11829505)
Pithy answer 2: because they are economically privileged.

The headline is a broad generalisation, and as another broad generalisation poorer people are more religious and more conservative because they have harder lives, bleaker temporal outlooks and hope for a better life 'beyond'.

Re:Britain is the most corrupt country in the world? on Wednesday June 01, 2016 @04:58AM (#11812985)
So the most ruthless mafia operate among international organizations, but from London, thus making Britain the most corrupt country in the world? Perhaps they never leave London, not old enough to travel alone, or they don't know how to use the internet.

There's nothing new under the sun, just the sensationalist Bremain propaganda you'd expect a few weeks before an EU referendum.

Re:Keep your identity small (2009) on Friday May 20, 2016 @04:20AM (#11736271)
It's usually inappropriate to draw in politics and religion when they are off topic, but sometimes they are involved. Ethics are involved frequently with technology, so politics and religion are not that far off.

Though really, It's pretty shallow to draw like for like comparisons between religion/politics and JS discussions. JS is trivial. Most tech discussions are trivial the day after they've been had.

Re:Front-end Developer Handbook on Thursday October 29, 2015 @06:30AM (#10470069)
High level in many areas "full-stack" is not as mythical as is suggested, it just takes someone with the right aptitude, and a long time over a lot of roles to get there.

Whether it does such a person any favours in the employment market is another question as you can't build businesses on rare commodities.

Re:Front-end Developer Handbook on Thursday October 29, 2015 @06:24AM (#10470054)
Dense, opinionated and somewhat bewildering. Which in a way represents the world of "front-end" in 2015 very well.

Re:Grid Style Sheets – CSS polyfills from the future on Wednesday March 19, 2014 @11:02AM (#7429047)
The design of the site is excellent, but...

Vanilla CSS isn't that bad. Existing preprocessors have made it much nicer to use without changing the basic formula and workings of CSS.

GSS is a fairly radical departure and as such it should offer big returns which I'm not seeing. Moreover, I don't see that it's solving a problem that needed solving in the first place.

Re:Absolute Horizontal And Vertical Centering In CSS on Thursday November 07, 2013 @02:25PM (#6691777)
There are, in-fact, and have been for a while several known ways do do this in CSS 2.1 this just being another with a similar long list of restrictions and context requirements.

http://css-tricks.com/centering-in-the-unknown/

They're all much of a muchness, at least we'll be able to just use flexbox soon enough.

Re:Solved By Flexbox – Cleaner, hack-free CSS on Wednesday September 25, 2013 @04:23AM (#6443292)
FWIW modern flexbox techniques also work in IE 10, you just need the right polyfill since that browser uses a slightly older version of flexbox syntax. For examples:

Re:Show HN: Logos in Pure CSS on Saturday June 01, 2013 @04:11PM (#5805763)
As others have pointed out, well crafted or not, it doesn't add anything new to what people know can be done with CSS if you hack it hard enough; 5 years ago someone made a Homer Simpson in pure CSS (before border-radius) and it worked in IE 5.5: http://www.romancortes.com/blog/homer-css/

If you think SVG is a craftless 'just export it' type of technology then you're not really getting it - it's xml - human readable and editable.

You get a lot more out of it if you know how to read the source, add/remove/alter the elements by hand if needs be. So plenty of valuable skills to develop, things to learn and opportuties for push yourself without resorting to yet another demonstration of how it's possible to simulate vector illustration if you apply copious amounts of divs and CSS.

Re:Show HN: Logos in Pure CSS on Saturday June 01, 2013 @03:21AM (#5803132)
Why see it as negativity?

SVG is a core web standard that is woefully underused considering how well it is supported. These complex 'you can do this with CSS' demos are always impressive, but they have little practical use; considering the underuse and lack of knowledge about SVG right now, it seems a little perverse to me that people keep making them.
