News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

This reminds me of those break-through articles about using Scotch tape as mass storage medium.
How will you solve cold-start problem for new content that might be more relevant but is missing user-feedback?

Good catch. From their website "Promoting an American public policy based on individual liberty, limited government, free markets and peaceful international relations."
In addition to that, the physical experience works almost always. In the digital world, you might have a connection problem with your router, Spotify app (replace with your app of choice) freezes and so on. The reliability is what I miss most.
Re:Alexander the Great versus the Elephants on Thursday February 02, 2023 @09:11AM (#34626695)
Wonder how pervasive Elephants and other animals that are now endangered were at that time.
Re:Why Cassettes? on Friday January 06, 2023 @11:02AM (#34276229)
I think many artist interviews or respective wiki pages mention how their early taste in music was influenced by wondering through their parents music collection - be it tapes, vinyl or CDs. With everyone on their own Spotify account that sounds way more complicated.
Denmark has the same policy, maybe Sweden too?
Re:The Car-Replacement Bicycle (The Bakfiets) on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @07:08AM (#32577766)
Could not agree more. Most city infra is not built for bakfiets-style bikes so they clog bike lanes. Paired with an electric motor they are dangerous given the speed they can go and their intrinsic weigh.

Most of the time I see people carry a single child or a bag of goods at best. Quite similar to how often people use SUVs for actual offroad riding, like never. Don't get me wrong, if you are transporting stuff on a daily basis these are great. But it seems for the majority of time a normal bike plus backpack or child seat would have been sufficient.

Re:YDB – An open-source Distributed SQL Database on Tuesday April 19, 2022 @01:29PM (#31086138)
I think killing civilians using laughable pretext (weapons of mass destruction anyone?) with the goal of taking over or ensuring control over resources is not particular a Russian thing. Like invading an oil-rich country over the pretext of weapons of mass destruction.
Re:USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021) on Tuesday April 05, 2022 @07:11AM (#30917523)
The Realtek Ethernet is know to cause issues. Based on reports on various Mac forums the most reliable option for Ethernet is Apple's own Thunderbolt adapter which uses the Broadcom BCM57762. For current Macs it needs to be used in connection with the Apple's Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter.
Re:Hoppscotch: Open-source alternative to Postman on Monday February 28, 2022 @09:23AM (#30500089)
Maybe it is the same good idea as Slack is just a GUI on top of IRC
Re:When tracking your period lets companies track you on Wednesday January 19, 2022 @04:10AM (#29991459)
I wrote BabyMeals (https://baby-meals.github.io/) exactly for that reason. The amount of ad tracking and ad spam in female health apps (period trackers, child feeding) is staggering.
Re:Kagi: A Premium Search Engine on Friday January 07, 2022 @06:07AM (#29837723)
I agree that 20 bucks is relatively a lot of money. On the flipside, running a search engine does not come for free, curious what the costs of Google would be without the ads.
The blog post is short on what the preview enables. I assume this allows for running Intel-based images on Apple Silicon, the achieved emulation performance would be most interesting to know.
How did you figure out the Bluetooth protocol and commands? I have a Cannondale app for my bike, which is reading the Bluetooth wheel sensor to display speed and mileage. I'd like to build my own app for it but clueless on how to figure out the pairing and transmitted data.
I've started with 100 on top of each other and will gradually remove each until my test subjects stop suffocating.

Some of these look like German WWII aircraft eg ME-163
Re:Homebrew 3.0 on Friday February 05, 2021 @11:12AM (#26037844)
I don't recall how I came across it but remember well the relief after using it the first time. It was the first package manager on MacOS that worked and made installing common tools painless. With MacPorts, fink etc it felt like it would have been better to built from source yourself.
Maybe a mix of marketing value and organizational inertia? Music software allows you to do the famous musician uses Mac sell which Aperture does not. People probably can name you their favorite musician but not so much photographer.
Re:What happens to a mail-order mattress after you return it on Friday February 21, 2020 @09:08AM (#22383158)
How do you get such cheap foam price, bulk orders?

I once tried to purchase foam myself for a old sofa and the foam price was almost as high as purchasing a new sofa.

Re:Rejected from YC (Again) on Thursday October 17, 2019 @12:37PM (#21283764)
From my interaction with people from NGOs, mostly from foreign aid organizations, there seemed to be as many people genuinely trying to make a difference as the ones that are only interested in their own agenda. I would like to think the smaller an organization the easer it is to maintain certain standards and not the other way around.
Re:Rejected from YC (Again) on Thursday October 17, 2019 @07:04AM (#21280752)
I'm not sure if working for an NGO is necessarily better in terms of culture. It seems to me you can have good or bad culture and management either way, regardless whether the purpose of the organization is making profits or not.
Re:SRE as a Lifestyle Choice on Tuesday October 08, 2019 @12:37PM (#21194109)
"White House HR once tried to reject a candidate whose previous employer was Github because he didn’t specifically list experience with version control on his resume."

This happens in the private sector too, had this with an internal recruiter that had no idea about the role and was only checking for keywords.

Everlane touts themselves sustainable and ethical but there's a lot of greenwashing in their marketing. See also https://www.eco-stylist.com/we-tested-everlane-and-they-fail...
Re:How to Cold Email Investors [video] on Tuesday September 24, 2019 @12:57PM (#21062212)
I've mailed VCs as a first-time founder and got a response or follow-up meeting.
Re:Elevating original reporting in Search on Friday September 13, 2019 @10:14AM (#20962347)
Do you experience this for dev-related searches or all types? I often have trouble finding relevant content for dev-related searches due to SEO content farms that wrap Stack Overflow content in an ad-infested user interface or worse.
Re:Camera sales are falling sharply on Wednesday September 04, 2019 @09:28AM (#20876977)
No doubt, there is a huge difference between a real cameras and smartphones in terms photo quality. I still sold my digital fullframe recently, even though I tried to keep the setup physically as small as possible it always felt like extra luggage. I'm now using an old but very good compact film camera for those special moments, which is easy to use, super compact and makes great photos.
Re:How to stop Apple from listening to your Siri recordings on Thursday August 01, 2019 @09:52AM (#20583672)
You don't need a some third-party thing, you can create the profile yourself using the Apple Configurator. Agree that this should be an easily accessible system setting like OP suggests.
Poshmark is very well know in the fashion space, which probably has very different demographics to the HN crowd.
Re:Google launches an end-to-end AI platform on Wednesday April 10, 2019 @01:48PM (#19627082)
This will make a bunch of startup's life really hard. I think it makes it harder to justify investing in your own ML pipeline or even building your own models for many use cases.
