The skeleton is economical:

Repair pays off only when the skeleton is used -- we can invest in repair because we know the animal is active/foraging and we will get paid back on the investment.

Low loading is a sign that we should cut back on maintenance -- the animal is sick, injured, starving etc and it's better to conserve energy.

The optimal amount of exercise is what tells your body to invest in repair, without acquiring repair debt. Sedentary life is the misleading signal, because it tells the body you're declining when you aren't.

Interesting problems are not the ones which are useful, but the ones which are difficult, which allow you to show what you can do.

Soon enough instead of Millennium Prize Problems we will have a list of problem AI has not been able to solve, with even bigger reputational reward for humans

Where will we be in another 4 years? What a time to be alive!

Insulin -- the fat storing hormone. The opposite hormones -- cortisol and adrenaline mobilize fat tissue for burning. Chronic cortisol leads to fat gain because cortisol receptors become desensitized. Spiking cortisol in short bursts is better than long bouts of elevated cortisol.

I agree. Let's have some kind of distinction between work and labor

The goal of every civilization is to abolish work. I don't see the problem.

Re:Numbering should start at zero: E.W. Dijkstra on Friday March 21, 2025 @04:39PM (#43440560)
Another idiot confusing continuous measure (time) with counting discrete units

If it helps: you have one whole array element only if one year has passed

What are you trying to do: do you want to know where each element starts, or do you want to measure the total sum/accumulated amount?

Re:Numbering should start at zero: E.W. Dijkstra on Friday March 21, 2025 @04:38PM (#43440542)
Array elements are not a continuous measure. Level of water, for example, is.

The mark on your measure tape corresponds to the total sum/amount.

If you count from zero, number of elements no longer corresponds to the size/length. So already here you deviate away from your tape principle.

You have one whole element when your tape measure shows 1, not zero.

Re:AI Guesses Your Accent on Wednesday December 11, 2024 @03:14PM (#42392367)
It guessed right, but it does not go by the accent, but by pronunciation of certain consonants. You can fake/simulate the former, but not the latter.
