Are you in the US or Europe? I’ve heard the term mobbing used in Germany but never the US. In the US bullying would apply to both adults and children.

The story mentioned intel and Qualcomm but quite possibly Broadcom was/is lobbying hard behind the scenes. They have a long history with both ZTE and Huawei and a lot to lose from the blacklisting. Luckily they weren’t allowed to purchase Qualcomm when they tried

He mentioned it because it shows that while he hasn’t been in the rat race he’s done well enough to treat his family well. I’m happy for him, and honestly 20k isn’t that much money in the big scheme of things so he probably didn’t think of it as a brag

In engineering the quip was always "if you're paying for graduate school you're doing it wrong" ... to even get in the door for most hardware jobs fresh out of school you need a MS. A PhD may be preferred, and will start with a higher salary -- but put in ~5yrs instead of 2. As long as the tuition is covered and you make money as a TA or RA in a low-cost of living area you should come out ahead in the engineering field. Not sure how that translates to software.
