Re:The Megadonors Who Have Poured $1.2B into the Midterms on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:03AM (#50336274)
I aggressively block all online ads and I still get these political ads coming through, a dozen a day, to my mobile number. It’s insufferable.
They are the collection of all human thought processes, as curated by Definitely Not Evil Corporation.
Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:29AM (#50325507)
It’s not the purpose of the economy, it’s the purpose of civilization.

What makes us different than most types of animals is that we’re capable of supporting the less fortunate members of our species even through life-threatening situations.

Well sure, and if you only shower once, you’ll quickly get dirty again. Cleanliness takes constant effort.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:09PM (#50279232)
If Google is going for the casual group of users, why do they make their AI offerings so hard to buy?
Wesnoth is great if you like games where you have to create and exploit situational advantages. Using advantageous terrain, the day/night cycle, and varied unit types makes it one of the most tactical games I’ve played.
Re:Physicists trap a single antimatter particle for a month on Sunday October 25, 2026 @01:04AM (#50228485)
“A literal handful of antimater particles” would be quite potent, even if your hands are very tiny.
I mean, why play games on expensive hardware when there’s decades of critically acclaimed games that will run on hardware like your phone? There are more great games out there than any one person can reasonably play.
Re:No Source Code? No Problem on Saturday October 24, 2026 @12:19AM (#50218339)
It’s not technically or financially viable. AAA games are already too expensive to create, and this increases the complexity by an order of magnitude. And that’s before the latency problems that make the game less fun, and therefore more likely to bomb.
As always, MOST people don’t hate AI, they hate slop. Slop has always existed in video games, it’s just faster to create now. So, so much faster.
Re:Flatpak – An Insecurity Nightmare on Monday October 19, 2026 @08:07AM (#50151387)
Snap apps also have preposterous security settings, like Inkscape only being able to load SVGs from certain paths on my system. It’s a file editor, it should be able to edit files, period.
Re:AI is mass decompiling games. That's both awesome and scary on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:09PM (#50093276)
More and more indie games rely on a well-optimized, unique mechanic (factory builders, voxel engines, etc.) and pushing that to the extreme.

Trying to vibe code such algorithms generally yields results that are not suitable for realtime gaming performance. I’m sure they’ll get there, but saying “make it fast” without carefully directing the algorithm design causes LLMs to add hack on hack on hack, creating a slow, spaghetti code monstrosity.

Surely this is because good spies don’t make the news.
If any one major player bows out, they could take everyone else out by opening up their model. There’s definitely a little bit of MAD going on.
It’s going to take a modern war between superpowers to convince nations that appliances shouldn’t be a ubiquitous security vulnerability.
Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @11:32AM (#49980034)
Surely there is a point where algorithmic improvements will be more cost effective than buying more hardware.
Is it really AGI if it can’t come to my address and slap me with a trout? Clearly AI is all hype /s
I’m working on an OpenStreetMap-powered map generator in Godot, this would probably be quite easy to build.
Re:Factorio that you can touch on Friday September 25, 2026 @04:59PM (#49849877)
I thought you were going to taste them for a second.
No, because they are anti-“corporate ethics”.
Presumably the plan is to deorbit all failing or obsolete systems. It’s phenomenally wasteful.
Re:How we made claude.ai 3x faster in two weeks on Thursday September 24, 2026 @08:32AM (#49829727)
I’ve found the best workflow has been to ask Claude to profile everything and identify the problem spots, then I have to be the one to propose the correct architecture, then Claude implements it. If I let Claude run wild it will invent all kinds of weird, weird hacks that compound the complexity.
Re:Did OpenAI solve the wrong Navier-Stokes problem? on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:34AM (#49816824)
It’s just people trying to cope in the most human way possible: “I don’t like AI, therefore AI is stupid, therefore its proof must be uninteresting.”

Almost never do people judge situations entirely on merit.

Re:Xbox continues its "reset" with dramatic restructuring on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @04:28PM (#49807618)
The ironic thing is you could pass the IP over to a passionate indie dev and they’d be more likely to churn out “the greatest Halo game ever” than any AAA studio.
Re:Ogre Battle 64 Recompiled Project at 99.05% on Monday September 21, 2026 @09:47AM (#49787248)
How long until we have a registry of all N64 titles and the progress to full decomp of the entire library?
With modern technology, we might be in the first era where direct democracy is truly viable. Frankly I think the people should have direct veto power on any legislation.
Re:'My Husband Has No Friends' on Friday September 18, 2026 @11:32AM (#49755852)
This article has some weird ideas that men should only hang “with the guys” and that women are social butterflies because they volunteer at their kids’ schools. This kind of blatant bias makes me skeptical about the entire premise of the article.
Re:Alibaba releases Qwen 3.8 Omni Flash on Thursday September 17, 2026 @11:10PM (#49749802)
Tuning the model so far in the direction of being aggressively useful that it will quickly go off the rails in the name of helpfulness.

I swear I spend more time telling Claude not to do things than telling it what to do.

By transaction volume yes. Presumably it’s not all spending though, if you regularly win back some of that money. The same dollar is probably wagered multiple times before it is lost.
Re:US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @09:19PM (#49721045)
Wouldn’t any needles launched prograde be put into a higher stable (though obviously elliptical) orbit?
