See also how it took Epic like five years before they implemented adding more than one item to your cart at a time. And how they have no forums, no reviews, barely a friends' list, terrible game integration (always-on unmutable voice chat lol), etc etc. Their product just sucks, simple as that.

There are still LANs going on around the US. I still go to Quakecon every year. Now everyone there is in their 40s+ and bringing their kids.

When Covid was ending and we started returning to office, it was on a biweekly rotating basis in order to keep less than half the people in the building at first. After my first shift back I thought, "oh, yea... I didn't realize this works a lot better for me." I then made arrangements to stay permanently.

My sinister side wonders if part of it could be that if you found it via AI but it turns out to be a hallucination, then you must accept the public ridicule for not thoroughly vetting the AI output.

Absolutely. If you need any signal to know where Big Tech's head is at, just look at how quickly they became arms dealers.

Whether they did this or not, I think the exponential demand for memory would still be there. So there would still be conditions that encourage new competing manufacturers.

Probably the concentration of a too-big-to-fail percentage of capital into a single digit number of tech companies, many of whom are engaging in circular financing deals between one another while also ransacking the entire consumer electronics space.

I appreciate your optimistic view of it. What I got out of it was that Covid was a sort of dress rehearsal for a far worse outbreak that could eventually happen, and we (Americans) failed miserably.

This past weekend I was flying on Delta and my first flight was delayed such that I was going to miss my connecting flight, so I rebooked onto a later one. During my layover I visited the gate agent to get a boarding pass with a seat assignment.
"Do you have the Delta app?"
"Nope."
Then he pressed a few keys on his keyboard and printed out a new boarding pass for me within five seconds. I couldn't believe he was trying to kick me over to the app if it was that easy.

Back in the day the city installed a new streetlight that blinded anyone sitting on the front porch of my grandparents' house, which they liked to do in the evening. So Granddad got out a painter's pole and rolled some white paint onto the side that faced his house. Problem solved and no one ever said anything.

"AI promises to change the world for the better" - so far it's clear the world will be better for a few people. A promise that it will be better for everyone reads like "trust me, bro."
"Blockers need to be shown that their local area will benefit if they get out of the way." Benefit how? Will this be like when your city convinces you it's in everyone's interest to subsidize the latest billionaire-owned sports stadium?
"If America succumbs [to popular rage], it could cede the global ai frontier" ah here we go. The next generation of Too Big To Fail.
