What are these other places?
I’m not too deep into the matter but don’t they all have to wait in the interconnection queue first anyway? My understanding is that that alone will take some years
Re:Pac-Man, but you're the ghost on Sunday June 14, 2026 @10:06AM (#48527340)
Back in the glory days of hackathons my now-wife and I wrote a multiplayer version of pac-man where one player controlled pac-man and the other was a ghost.

We didn’t quite manage to make it fun to play but it sure was a huge amount of fun hacking it together!

Yeah great idea! Let’s also just legalise recreational fentanyl while we’re at it

Nothing more ironic than an article about conscious writing that’s entirely written by AI.
Social policies and a clean environment is what I want

Meanwhile Mr POTUS himself wants to introduce prop betting in his social media platform.

Don’t expect anything to change anytime soon

Re:Oxford loses top 3 university ranking for the first time on Sunday September 21, 2025 @12:55PM (#45324474)
iirc the Times ranking has always been garbage as it weighs some "student experience" metric way too high. Do I really care about the result of some online survey equally or more than the academic achievement of the staff?

Back when I chose a UK university to attend, I valued the QS ranking much higher.

I’ve never agreed with a title and then disagreed with the content more than this article.

Jokes on you, I care a lot about my work and can still get it done in 5 hours a day.

Calling TNG a lab is a bit funny to me. It’s a consulting company that lets people hack on stuff between placements.
My memory might be off here but wasn’t the initial AWS "cheaper" promise only made vs buying & maintaining your own hardware?
Re:YouTube's new anti-adblock measures on Friday June 20, 2025 @07:37PM (#44333133)
It has to be a cost thing. HLS is so insanely optimised down to the hardware level that adding any kind of compute for targeting would increase costs exponentially.

I’m not too deep into it anymore but there’s some great articles from Netflix out there talking about the crazy optimisations done to their edge servers for streaming.

Re:Ask HN: What do you spend your money on? on Monday June 02, 2025 @11:14AM (#44159696)
I mean true, fair point but OP asked what I spent my money on and it’s travel, as described.

Could I also buy a new laptop? Yeah sure, but I don’t because I don’t value it as much.

Re:Ask HN: What do you spend your money on? on Monday June 02, 2025 @09:57AM (#44158917)
Food and (international) travel almost exclusively.

Currently on the third $10k+ trip with my wife in 18 months but don’t have a car and am still using my laptop from 2014. Main reason is that I feel like I have my whole life to buy X or Y but only have the time and energy to travel long distances while young.

Out of everything wrong in this comment the funniest one is "Even Amazon orders […] suck"

Care to elaborate? Last time I was in the US my prime order took over a week to be delivered because it had to get shipped from a warehouse in rural Ohio to San Diego. Here in Germany you get absolutely everything next day because the country is about the size of an average US state.

Calling Chernobyl a minor accident is insane. We are lucky it wasn’t worse but even then most of Europes forests are still polluted from the fallout. People directly killed during the incident is not a great indicator of incident severity when we're talking about environmental pollutants.

Nobody died from installing asbestos insulation yet here we are.

80% SoH is the de-facto industry standard for EoL/replacement. Mostly because after that you will eventually get a "knee-point" in your degradation curve at which operation is risky and largely inefficient.

Without knowing specifics, your MBP might have had issues with an individual cell such that initial capacity dropped significantly until the cell was disconnected.

Re: on Saturday October 19, 2024 @06:30AM (#41886973)
I think the idea here is to build a thin layer but BYOD.

I currently work for a company where most our value add lies in the data collection, cleaning and running of proprietary algorithms. A UI like this would be a game changer for us and something that Anthropic couldn’t easily replicate due to all the IP in our data pipeline.

Kudos to her for making this open source and free to users!

The answer is the same: Convenience, SLAs, layers of abstraction…

I find it hard to recommend the Angular port going forward, or at least until the Ant Design 5 sync has been made.

For those who don’t know, last year Ant Design (the design system behind both component libraries) underwent a major redesign from version 4.x to 5. This redesign didn’t just change the look & interactions but also fundamentally reworked the theming options through simplified and more comprehensive style tokens.

ng zorro still hasn’t adopted this new redesign or given a timeline/reasoning despite the GitHub issue currently being the most upvoted active one.

Not blaming the maintainers here, I understand this isn’t a simple endeavour and I’m in no position to complain since I don’t contribute but I would be very hesitant to chose ng zorro right now given the uncertainty of the situation.

Smash ultimate has notoriously bad netcode so playing on this setup locally was probably a step up in terms of latency

Sorry for being pedantic but that’s not components that’s just global classes. Bootstrap anyone?
Re:Google: Angular and Wiz Are Merging on Friday March 22, 2024 @06:13PM (#39795411)
The announcement post for Angular 17 included a few sentences about this [1]

We deprecated legacy components in v15 to be removed in v17. Even though they’ll not be part of the Angular Material v17 package, you can still update your apps to Angular v17 and use the v16 Angular Material package. This will be an option until v18, after which Angular Material v16 will no longer be compatible with newer versions of Angular.

Re:Google: Angular and Wiz Are Merging on Friday March 22, 2024 @06:11PM (#39795399)
No but Angular 17 is backwards compatible with @angular/material@16 so you can upgrade Angular without having to upgrade Material [1]. We currently run @angular/[email protected] and @angular/[email protected] in production without problems.

In the end this only buys you another 6 months but helped us get ready for Angular 18 in May.

Re:Google: Angular and Wiz Are Merging on Thursday March 21, 2024 @02:19PM (#39782357)
You can upgrade all the way to Angular 17 without having to adopt the new MDC components. Only this May with Angular 18 support for the legacy components will be dropped completely.

That’s the reason we’re currently migrating all our remaining usages of Material components to ng-zorro.

I have nostalgia for a lot of things in webdev, hacking together floating layouts is not one of them. /s

But congrats on the work! I can definitely see this being useful for text formatting and layouting PDFs. Neat!

Re:Airbus electric air taxi makes its debut on Friday March 08, 2024 @10:22AM (#39641839)
When is a helicopter an "air taxi" now?

Don’t get me wrong, electric helicopter/glider hybrids are cool tech but this just seems like an existing product repackaged to sound futuristic.
