Claude and OpenAI were doing it. What good are business lemmings if they don't yeet themselves off a cliff?
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:49PM (#50277859)
if you want to talk about 'average people' go hang out on reddit. How many times have 'average people' been brought up here explicitly to shut down a discussion. It is reductive and insulting

how many good things have 'average people' (and the avaricious wanterpreneurs chasing their dollars) ruined? Nearly everything!

So does this export 3d assets or an Unreal/godot/unity project so it can be turne dinto a game or is it limited to their runtime?

I had a Logitech MX master or sth like that and it had one of those. Too bad it was made like crap. I went through two of them in two years.
A customer segment that can afford to buy out ads is the customer segment advertisers want most.
While that may be true, none of the major DRM schemes seem to get in the way of a scene release
And then one generation from now there are no more hardware consoles and you are stuck streaming games from the cloud from your thin-client smart TV. Yet another joy of actually having a physical thing taken away from us, yet again.
Re:Facebook now charging to post more than 2 links a month on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:14PM (#50172771)
I don't know what you are talking about, in my locale and community (coastal SoCal) it is practically essential for keeping on tops of events and learning about potential gigs. Making a facebook post is about the most reliable method I have for broadcasting a message to my friends. Most everybody is still on it. I am an elder millenial.

It's been a little bit since any major hacks have hit the news but this is a time honored tradition partcularly with the Playstation. Way back when the PS3 arrived the US government was considering export sanctions because they were too powerful. I believe some universities even kept a cluster of PS3s for their distibuted computing courses or for research. Sony even had an approved way to run Linux.
Seems like something Opus could author in a few minutes given the right credentials

Re:IRCv3 on Monday October 12, 2026 @12:35PM (#50058921)
mIRC, AIM, Trillian, MSN, Yahoo messenger, ICQ all had one chat per window and you could open as many as you want. IIRC (its been a while) mIRC let you tile multiple channels in the same window a la tmux

Yes I just love its patronizingly cute little animations everywhere reminding me not to think too hard

I cannot believe this stupid app is so popular when you can't even monitor multiple servers at once! When every brother and their mother has a discord server but I can only look at one channel on one server at a time??

Re:IRCv3 on Sunday October 11, 2026 @02:08PM (#50046032)
ICQ numbers got into 9, 10 digits. For a late 90s internet population that was practically everybody.
Re:OpenSCAD the Programmers Solid 3D CAD Modeller on Saturday October 10, 2026 @01:45PM (#50035285)
The nightly builds for this are so much better. When are they going to merge the nightlies into a new mainline release? The last one showing 2021 isn't the best look...

I find that asking the AI to keep to Google's Developer Documentation Style Guide is a good alternative for STE-100

That's all wonderful until some dipshit decides to cut features because they were too much of a maintenance burden. At least with the desktop app you can push back and not update.
Re:Using Blu-ray M-Disk as Backup of Last Resort on Monday October 05, 2026 @11:09PM (#49973701)
Blu-rays are way more durable than CDs and DVDs for some reason
Re:Using Blu-ray M-Disk as Backup of Last Resort on Monday October 05, 2026 @11:08PM (#49973695)
In bulk the 128gb blu ray discs aren't nearly as expensive -- I picked up a 25 pack for about $230 18 months ago

The bigger problem is finding a drive that can read and write them -- the 128gb format support is a bit harder to find. I thought I would be good with my nice Pioneer BDRW drive but it didnt have the support so I had to buy an LG unit. So now my desktop has two BDRWs -- how very 2006!

Re:Why don't more developers "use the platform"? on Sunday October 04, 2026 @12:23PM (#49955284)
I don't understand how WebComponents are such a poor idea. I have intentionally reached for them when building frontend code for most of my simple sites and they have been perfectly fine. Not great, but fine.

WebComponents do their job with little-to-no fuss, and they're universally available.

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Friday October 02, 2026 @11:15AM (#49934448)
The gemini series have also been really strong on text extraction. I've been evaluating models to replace gemini 2.5 and its been hard to find something that performs as well as other gemini models
I don't know... mid 2010's pre-match.com OkCupid and PlentyOfFish seem to get a lot of love. Not saying they didn't have problems but they did actually match a lot of happy couples and online dating didn't feel like nearly as much of a wasteland as it does today
Re:The AI Race Just Got Awkward on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:19PM (#49911769)
It isn't, that is whole point. A normie hears that word and they think vodka.
Re:GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @04:01PM (#49899498)
I just ran a huge text/image extraction grudgematch against all the current inexpensive models except gpt-5.5/5.6/6 (due to some issues with openrouter and bugs in my code) and DS4 ranked very poorly. Accuracy winner was Gemini 3.8 flash with minimax M3 and qwen 3.8 placing, and the chinese models beat the incumbent (Gemini 2.5 Flash) on cost whilst keeping like 95% of the accuracy.

I haven't used deepseek for anything else but the above results make me question its overall capability. Meanwhile qwen3.8 has continued to impress.

Again?
Re:Claude Status – Elevated errors for multiple models on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @01:30PM (#49805020)
Agreed, I believe strongly that human-in-the-loop is the way to go. LLMs are fantastic thought partners but ask it to critique something and it will go absolutely nuts. For Claude Code's /code-review command the highest I will set it is 'medium', otherwise it will produce so much feedback that you'd never get anything done.
Re:Frontier AI on Your Own Hardware on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @02:38AM (#49797477)
Anecdotally, the volume of recruiter spam for senior-ish positions I've been getting through email has picked up. Still nowhere near pre-COVID levels.
