Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:08PM (#50292425)
you're not really the ideal customer. They're probably going to market to enterprise people because Claude/ChatGPT will become too expensive when they IPO and won't have any other revenue stream unlike Google/MS.
Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:05PM (#50291264)
do any of you have young kids and dual, heavy stress jobs? DoorDash and Instacart are godsends for families on the go who don't have time to do all this stuff anymore. My wife and I BARELY have time to go grocery shopping and will probably use this service once a month, doordash more than that when we don't have the energy to cook dinner and don't want to wrestle our kid into the car and constantly entertain them at a restaurant.
this is not the lesson lol. Why should the cops be allowed to enforce such a dumbass rule with no consequence?
Nah, it's great for coffee breaks IMO. Not everything needs to be perfect. Honestly every dev I know rejoices when GH goes down because it gives them a much needed and deserved break lol.
Re:Bonsai: Janestreet's UI Library on Monday August 03, 2026 @06:21PM (#49162230)
How on earth is this a web UI Library and yet there is no link to any sort of example page (like a github.io page or something) showing this off?
Re:Why is Meta destroying its engineering organization? on Tuesday June 16, 2026 @03:32PM (#48560700)
Totally agree. And who cares, the internet, computers and web apps worked before and will work after those go away. It's not like React is some irreplaceable genius invention, it's just a framework like Ember, Angular, etc etc. The people who made them are no doubt amazing, but what I'm saying is we're not "in debt" to Meta for these tools at all.
Re:Technical Interviews Reject the Wrong Engineers on Friday June 05, 2026 @12:10PM (#48414527)
I love how people in this thread are ABSOLUTELY BAFFLED at "how do we do this a better way." How about the same way doctors, lawyers, and literally everyone else does it? Look at credentials, schooling, past experience, references and personality interviews rather than 99% leetcode? I have lawyer, doctor, etc friends (aka high up professionals who get paid what we do or more) and they think it's absolute insanity what SOFTWARE engineers have to do to get a freaking job. They think it's asinine, quite frankly and all go "well what did you even go to school for? Don't they know you worked at a Fortune 500 company for over a decade? Why are they having you do trick questions from CS101 courses?"

Y'all, it's not that difficult. You can just pretend we're like everyone else because gasp our profession simply isn't that special like we all think it is for some stupid reason.

I am still absolutely baffled at how they don't realize how much more productive most people are at home. Where I work we have to go in 2x a week and those days are just PACKED with meetings, or on campus activities planned by management, etc. Barely any work gets done by anyone, it's ridiculous.
They can track when you get in, but not when you leave ;)
incorrect; they are demanding that you download their app. "See! Our mobile experience isn't good, you need the app!!"
the name... cmon.
Re:Amazon Announces RTO for Employees on Friday February 17, 2023 @06:45PM (#34842143)
not really a big deal for them considering they have the big bucks to buy a nice home 5 min from the office, or you know, pay for a car service to drive them.
This, and most of the recession was manufactured to take worker power away that was gained during WFH/pandemic times. It's not a coincidence that the FAANG companies were fined a combined 45M (chump change to them) when caught colluding to stagnant tech worker wages. I almost guarantee they colluded in layoffs/getting people to RTO.
I made and operate a small app called [FishHarmony](https://www.fishharmony.com/). It's a simple app for iPhone that tells you what fish species (fresh or salt, I offer both) are compatible with fish of different species! So if you want to see if Tetras get along with Rasboras, for example, you can check my app/website! I've done no marketing and get something ~200 active users per month and 1K+ downloads lifetime. Not much, but still cool that people are using it!

I pay about 7/month for a Heroku instance and the stupid $99 a year for the App Store. Working on some freemium apps that will hopefully offset those costs.

as someone who has an aquarium, i'm amazed it didn't happen in the middle of the night. Any time I've had an overflow issue or something, it's always in the middle of the night and my water sensor is blaring
Re:Who cares about diversity? on Monday September 12, 2022 @02:00PM (#32814265)
+1 here, and yeah it's definitely not just white men. Where I work, it's ALL Indian or Asian, you'd be hard pressed to even find white people where I work that are actually in engineering.
Re:Stop Interviewing with Leet Code on Thursday June 09, 2022 @07:42PM (#31688360)
this is 99% of interviews in literally every other field ever.
Re:Stop Interviewing with Leet Code on Thursday June 09, 2022 @01:15PM (#31683978)
I really disagree here; I've been a successful engineer at a Fortune 500 company for a decade. I'm a front end engineer. I still have absolutely no idea why companies choose to test FE engineers with leetcode style questions (which I am terrible at). My job has almost NOTHING to do with leetcode, and yet it's a huge hurdle to go over for some unknown reason.

I'm a great engineer, I just suck at leetcode questions because...shocker! They have absolutely nothing to do with my day-to-day. It's similar to puzzles; I hate puzzles and doing puzzles/escape rooms/etc, but I'm a pretty smart guy.

Leetcode is merely a gatekeeping methodology that proves almost nothing and weeds out a lot of amazing engineers who aren't skilled at grinding leetcode or hate brain teaser shit.

Same, I live in CA and thankfully it hasn't been reported in CA at all somehow. I live by a popular bird flyway so it's a tad concerning.
same, I feel like if you're not gullible the experience is really smooth. I've bought everything from live coral to jackhammers on ebay no problem.
Re:Ajax Battle: XMLHttpRequest vs. the Fetch API on Tuesday April 19, 2022 @12:50PM (#31085625)
I always think it's the cleaning solution LOL
This is absolutely awesome, I cannot wait to install it on my mac color classic!!
i think the bigger issue here is the instance where he has a half white half black guest on saying he "has a black body and white brain, so best of both worlds!" It's really gross and appalling that someone would even jokingly say something about that.
Pretty sure racist remarks on the podcast and use of n-word casually isn't {popular to hate thing of the month}, so I respectfully disagree heavily with you here.
Re:FDA authorizes first antiviral pill for Covid, Paxlovid on Wednesday December 22, 2021 @03:01PM (#29654284)
I honestly think you severely underestimate the amount of people not taking it due to being conspiracy nuts.

I never thought I'd know ANYONE like this, but now almost every antivaxxer I know has some crackpot insanity reason for not getting vaccinated. None of them are worried about safety, FDA approval, etc. Hell my FIL thinks COVID-19 was meant to bring the endtimes so Jesus will come back and the rapture will happen. So do ALL of his constituents of his Church more or less.

So let's not mitigate the crackpots to a "minority" because it's simply not true.

Re:The 88x31 GIF Collection on Tuesday June 15, 2021 @01:07PM (#27518308)
I miss this version of the internet :( Everything is so boring now.
Why not just move to Idaho then? Or some other red state?
Good, they deserve it.
Re:Sarcophagi buried for 2,500 years unearthed in Saqqara on Sunday September 20, 2020 @02:06PM (#24535876)
This is the wrong year for this LOL
Re:Single Page Applications using Rust on Tuesday August 11, 2020 @03:06PM (#24124509)
I promise you that the amount of JS devs who LIKE Rust is not very high. I cannot imagine going from a language like JS or TS to the confusing syntactical monster that is Rust.

I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but JS/TS is WAY more human readable than Rust is. It's almost the equivalent of programming in C for the browser. Plus, literally anything you could ever want to use in already in the JS ecosystem and doesn't have to be reinvented in Rust.
