Re:As an Employee, You Are Disposable (2023) on Friday July 12, 2024 @04:42AM (#40943760)
I was disposed of recently after 4 years. Looking back now I feel I put in too many hours, filled in for roles and responsibilities without financial compensation. I'm 40 and still making these types of mistakes. Just an overwhelming feeling of sadness and frustration.

High five for all the other recently made redundant peeps.

"All jobs are mostly cosplay, management doubly so." - What an excellent way of describing it.

Thanks for your comment, it's enlightened and motivational. Unfortunately so much management isn't like this.

> Ask developers to propose work-life goals and objectives

I think I'd just hand my notice in. If that was ever asked of me.

The whole article feels way over the top and honestly suffocating. Most people I work with struggle through the usual set of goals/targets every year and hate every minute of it. People are complex and have a wide variety of skills, treating people like this isn't motivational and you'll find good people moving elsewhere.

I just sat through 3 hours of meetings. I wish this had been read before we started.
Re:FlashFloppy: Open-source Firmware for floppy emulators on Saturday November 28, 2020 @06:04PM (#25241321)
I guess it doesn't have to be a pi. The idea would be that the pi would connect to your network and provide the floppy drive into an older system. Any system on the network could command the pi to mount the floppy image to the connected device.

Basically I don't want to have to be constantly moving a usb disk around.

Re:FlashFloppy: Open-source Firmware for floppy emulators on Saturday November 28, 2020 @11:51AM (#25238640)
I'm looking for something like this that runs on a raspberrypi. The pi would provide the image to the floppy drive connection.
yes, I can't imagine docker is going to be happy either.
Re:“This is why I use ad blockers and a pi-hole server” on Thursday January 23, 2020 @06:27AM (#22126658)
This is obvious but I had Firefox containers & Decentraleyes enabled. This makes comparing the results to the output of the DevTools Network tab a little difficult.

Turn off all the protection to see the issues in the DevTools Network tab.

I'd like a bot which ripped the articles from Bloomberg and created a simple lightweight output. It's Getting to the point where I avoid anything on Bloomberg.
Re:When XML Beats JSON: UI Layouts on Thursday October 31, 2019 @04:53AM (#21406826)
of course, but for a ui?
Re:When XML Beats JSON: UI Layouts on Wednesday October 30, 2019 @11:54AM (#21399074)
I agree. I think the argument isn't json/xml/yaml/crazy it's why isn't this just code.
Re:.NET Core gRPC on Wednesday September 25, 2019 @08:48AM (#21070227)
It has a steep learning curve, true.

I personally like sharing `interface.cs` rather than what appears very similar `interface.proto` plus a bunch of tooling.

Ahh well, things go in circles I guess.

Re:.NET Core gRPC on Tuesday September 24, 2019 @04:23AM (#21057725)
I might be the only person who liked WCF.
If by "....in many places...." you mean the majority, then I agree.
I'd forgotten about Firefox mobile. I agree, it's very slow.
Because developers will code apps around Electron -> Chromium. It'll get more focus because of that.
I find it hard to believe that speed is really the issue here. I suspect it's more likely it's the aggressive advertising scheme in which Google push for Chrome.

I think these projects which Mozilla test/launch are an indication that even they don't know how to stop the eroding of Firefox market share.

If I were Mozilla I'd be seriously worried about Electron.

Re:24-core CPU and I can’t move my mouse on Monday July 10, 2017 @06:06AM (#14734643)
"what specifically do you dislike about it?"

It's not the tooling I dislike it's the performance. No matter what I throw at it I still get the same experience. It feels like 95% of everything it does is blocking the UI.

He's also written some stuff regarding Visual Studio perf.

Close to my heart as I use Visual Studio all day. Horrid piece of software.

I'll probably get downvoted for this.

Re:Better Software Design with Clean Architecture on Monday July 03, 2017 @06:01AM (#14687118)
"I implement these rules both sides" ... and the maintenance overhead?
Re:Better Software Design with Clean Architecture on Monday July 03, 2017 @05:02AM (#14686894)
At what point should basic validation be completed?
This is a common and large issue in my opinion. Papers built and published without source.
Re:Running ASP.NET 5 on Lego Mindstorms EV3 on Friday November 20, 2015 @05:22AM (#10600530)
I agree with what you’ve said. The solution structure, msbuild and the general tooling all seems a bit confused.

It doesn’t help that sometimes dubious tooling was pushed as the correct way to do things, for example runtime JavaScript minification (a.k.a. bundles).

I think generally they are trying phase out some existing tooling while trying to adapt Visual Studio to new tooling.

TLDR; Right tool for the job.

Re:Apollo 11 Flight Plan – Final [pdf] on Sunday December 28, 2014 @12:45PM (#8806810)
I find this fascinating. Again 1969!

Abbreviations: 8-balls - Flight Director Attitude Indicator

I completely agree. Terrible stuff.

It gets even worse with TFS and its new workflow system. In fact workflow in general is terrible and once again it's ' programming in XML'. Do MS dogfood this stuff at all?
