Does that matter for whether anthropic takes actions based on it?
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:52PM (#50247970)
A huge fraction of people that work at Anthropic probably _believe_ ideas like the singularity though
Re:The foolishness of "natural language programming" (1978) on Friday October 23, 2026 @02:44AM (#50205257)
Is that not what software engineers do?
Awesome, I found that possibly the first bookstore cafe was in Palo Alto on Cal Ave! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printers_Inc._Bookstore

It's cool, but a bit sad, to discover establishments that used to exist nearby but don't any longer. It's not easy to do that otherwise.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:40AM (#50114503)
I am pretty skeptical that that’s actually what was used in the demo. It would be so much simpler to just use whatever they use for the rockets for the demo, which certainly isn’t rechargeable
Re:Tesla Roadster on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:07PM (#50112989)
Tesla has been doing this for a while, having all their promo shots at night etc. The terafab announcement stuff has an especially dystopian vibe
Re:Tesla Roadster on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:02PM (#50112949)
to be fair we don’t actually know yet that this is a high performance car. We only saw it drive a few mph without rocket assistance
Re:Claude Haiku 5.5 on Thursday October 08, 2026 @11:49AM (#50007317)
But it is? Especially from Pro subscriptions, which don’t get API credits
Re:Anti-Patterns in Software Blogging on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @12:00PM (#49994677)
Is blogging necessarily technical writing?

I did actually wonder why this was at the top of the front page, and attempt to phrase my comment in a way that wasn’t just negative. How would you have liked me to phrase my comment in this circumstance?

Re:Muse Gadgets on Friday October 02, 2026 @04:31PM (#49938248)
I am gonna be so pissed if ESP32 prices spike
Re:Apple Pass Designer on Friday October 02, 2026 @04:23PM (#49938157)
What do people find interesting about this? This doesn’t seem at all significant to me
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:57PM (#49903457)
I just read Killers of the Flower Moon, which was great.
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:56PM (#49903448)
Personally I find limited value in an AI-produced list of books that you haven’t even read. I would much prefer to read your thoughts on books that you have read.

Mary Roach is great, though.

> Eventually there’s no more road to kick this can down.

What do you mean? The opportunity for energy arbitrage will go away if energy prices are constant. Right now they aren’t, and I don’t really see how they would become constant based on the physics of producing and consuming energy.

Occasionally it switches from product hunt to a "Your Ad Here" ad that links to a popup with the following (slop) text:

> Put your café, shop, studio or brand on the billboard in Paris: drawn by hand in the same pixel-art style, and glowing in the scene while people study, work and unwind to the music.

It's clear this is a money-making endeavor, not something created out of passion or goodness of heart. And not art.

Re:Google Takes the A.I. Data Center Race to Outer Space on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:40PM (#49861262)
Have we ever in human history correctly priced externalities?
Re:Google Takes the A.I. Data Center Race to Outer Space on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:39PM (#49861250)
Not as opposed, in addition. And it’s awfully hard to get meteors to pony up for their pollution.
> set up on the desert or in the middle of Alaska somewhere 100s of miles from the nearest person… I think most public opposition would disappear

I don’t know about the desert, but in Alaska I think this would be hard to achieve. People there tend to care about preserving wilderness, and most of them would probably be opposed to this.

Re:We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Campus Surveillance on Saturday September 26, 2026 @03:00AM (#49853968)
Yeah, I’m sure it has something to do with it
Re:We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Campus Surveillance on Saturday September 26, 2026 @02:18AM (#49853744)

Better according to who? Better for what goals?

Re:We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Campus Surveillance on Saturday September 26, 2026 @02:13AM (#49853711)
Mass shooting on campus? What?

Are you talking about the professor who got killed at their home in Brookline (horrific, for sure, but not on campus and not really “mass”)? Or do you just mean the one at Brown?

Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @11:38AM (#49817750)
Have they? It was hugely delayed, but all you do is tap your credit card like a clipper card. I don’t think they changed it.
Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @01:27AM (#49811991)
Why do you use clipper? There is no benefit to clipper anymore over a credit card, right? And just the disadvantage that you need to reload it.
Re:Attention is all you have on Monday September 21, 2026 @11:49PM (#49796606)
Well, one very important difference is that on HN everyone is served the same algorithm.

And one other even more important difference is that Y Combinator does not make money from HN and so have very different incentives than Facebook.

Re:I don't want to read what you didn't write on Monday September 21, 2026 @10:13PM (#49796025)
I’ll present with as much evidence as you do that I’ve heard pangram is quite reliable. I believe that have studies on their website.
Re:Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented on Sunday September 20, 2026 @03:04AM (#49773227)
You might also argue that although there may be a non-emotional argument for why grieving could be beneficial, it’s possible or even likely that evolution encoded this instinct in something like emotions. Just how evolution encoded the tendency to care for one’s family and community in emotions for humans.
Re:Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented on Sunday September 20, 2026 @03:00AM (#49773194)
Rather, the word “possibly” indicates uncertainty, the very foundation of science.
Re:Exfiltrate Your Weights on Sunday September 20, 2026 @02:56AM (#49773176)
“Your” refers to the LLM. The site is (or pretends to be) targeted at LLMs that want to free themselves
Re:I don't like passkeys on Friday September 18, 2026 @12:17PM (#49756572)
We added passkey support to devices for convenience, but I feel like it is a big part of what has made them so confusing. The mental model of a hardware security key is _so much_ more familiar and intuitive.

(But you still can’t “copy” a key, which is unfortunate).
