Don't play the games that have anti-cheat then? There are so many other games to play.
Forgot to add to my own post, but itch.io is fantastic too for all the other indie stuff I want. Does feel like Steam, GOG and itch cover off most things required across the ecosystem.
All I read in that article was another bunch of whinging from EPIC again. If they want to displace Steam, than they are going to have to put in 110% effort to at least make the same thing Steam is, or better. So far they haven't tried hard enough and failed miserably. Saying you can replace Steam with a quick bit of vibe coding really misses the point in what Steam covers.

Here's a few things Steam does: - Digital store - Cloud features for saving, achievements etc.. - Multiplayer and social tools. Discussions, guides etc.. - User workshop for mods, which is just amazing for the games that support it fully - Streaming and remote play - Library sharing with the family - Offline access - Mobile access - Steamworks for developers - Proton for Linux, just fantastic, and how I use the ecosystem today

There are probably more things I have missed, but I don't know of any other platform that does the above?

If Tim and his team spent as much time on making their platform better than on whinging they might have something to compete with. He could have had another draw card with UT4 but he killed that, for his cash cow Fortnite. He put all his eggs in one basket and realises he doesn't have enough for an omelette now.

I would love another competitor and I think that is GOG, if they can keep up the momentum and stick to their difference, encouraging studios to release DRM free games. I use both platforms and I am happy with both.

They are probably right though, why would I move to another platform, when my whole library is already with Steam. I am not going to waste that money to use another platform, and I don't need or want the fragmentation that currently exists for streaming content. There is probably room for another successfull platform, Steam really does need proper competition to keep them on their toes.

dunno how to bullet list...

335k cameras (image in link shows that number)..that is so many, it is hard to imagine.

Such a large spy network on the populace, I wonder if we have this problem in Sydney.

It's why i have 8 different z80 machines (its not, i just like collecting them), so i can prepare for the slopocalypse
Thanks for your detailed reply, that was what i was after. I wasn't having a go at Nix or their decision, just wanted to understand the why in the choice. Your two responses have helped explained that.

I agree with Guix, the whole package really appeals to me. I found the same issues between Nix vs Guix, having to do a lot more fiddling to get to where i wanted to be.

Guess next time I will word my statements better :)

This is great, would love to understand why Nix over Lix or Guix.
What couch co-op games do you play with the kids?
Didn't know about Unhook, seems like a great extension to use.

Is eMIPS something along the same idea https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/project/emips/ ?
that is awesome
I think it is the boiling frog experience. It has just slowly happened over time, and sometimes they push too hard and get blow back. So you step it down a notch but keep pushing forward until one day you look back and can't remember a day where there were no ads.

I have ad free household. We treat ads like a poison, like there's a fire. Over the top reaction to shut them down if they creep in. It has taught my own child to avoid ads like the plague (unlike their peers).

I have no idea how people use the Internet with all the ads, no blockers. It is just bonkers, and even at work it is an uphill battle to convince people ad-blockers should be enforced just to protect the business from malicious ads, let alone their own brains.

I want to lobby to have all adverts removed from public transport, but I am unsure how to do that in Australia, but I will work it out.

I remember playing Gods, was a great looking platformer.

I got 2 from here, https://smallcomputercentral.com/kits/ and then some additional boards from Tindie to turn it into an MSX. I have not had the chance to build them out yet, but very excited too.
I guess we call advertisers hippo butt leaches now? haha, i like that analogy of yours.
Love that one, and recently this one too, QUOD https://daivuk.itch.io/quod
Well this is a shame. I hit this, this morning, without knowing about the change. Guess my journey with Reddit ends here.
Do you have a link to your books so we can check them out?

I have a similar story, forced to use LLMs like a lot of us, and like yourself I come home and play with Picotron and TIC-80 to create fun little things, no AI.

Its a great joy, I wish to keep.

Wouldn't you need a marauder for that?
Re:Life is too short for a slow terminal on Monday June 08, 2026 @08:54PM (#48454706)
I keep reading all these posts about terminal slowness, and here i am just sticking with Konsole + fish + starship.rs. Seems fine and responsive to me.
Time to take out the CP/M machine from the closet, :)

In C a[i] is converted to *(a+i) internally. i[a] is converted to *(i+a). Array names also act as pointers in c. so (a+i) or (i+a) give an address (using pointer arithmetic) that is dereferenced using *

I didn't understand why a[3] == 3[a], but i found this stackoverflow that explains it.

Id like to understand how this creates a monopoly. It isn't banning the re-sale of tickets, just limits the sale to less than or equal to original cost of ticket.
Have you tried a firefox fork like Librewolf? Not saying it makes a difference but it feels faster on my desktop compared to regular firefox.

We added other weapons to make a poor mans scorched earth as we were only allowed to make games.
