The one student who got caught for plagiarism when I was a TA was busted by turnitin. Maybe the tool isn't perfect but it caught this student who had painstakingly replaced every single word in a copied paper with a synonym. I'm talking "perhaps the utility is not flawless, but the use of this utility allowed for the apprehension of a pupil who..." etc.

I was surprised at the level of effort

Re:Development: Time to Leave GDP Behind on Tuesday November 01, 2022 @02:05AM (#33417552)
I would scale it back as an autocratic ruler even if hurt GDP. It would be nice to see more of the night sky
Does loss of value via quantitative easing count?
maybe he's just tricking game devs into applying their work ethic to other product lines

I had the same experience with AWS ec2 free tier that ran out after a year and started billing me. They bill me $17/mo now even though the machine was shut down and AWS account was closed 2 months ago
harder to make 100k 23 years ago than it is today. by the time you finish a 2k/mo journey you begin today, 1.25M will be no longer be the cutoff for top 10%
Re:Facebook is other people on Monday September 27, 2021 @11:48AM (#28672155)
The worst part is the outrage part is downright addictive. Trying to get people who are plugged into this loop to take a step back and consider others' perspective is like taking their favorite toy away
Re:Twitter starts to require login to view tweets on Tuesday August 24, 2021 @01:21PM (#28291996)
I use old.reddit on mobile as well. Personally I prefer panning & zooming on the desktop version of a site to the mobile design in general
The biggest difference is that you're thinking about a very nasty 0.1% of twitter that use the platform to harass, whereas harassment is the primary purpose of this site.
To be fair, I haven't met anyone who drinks as much juice as soda drinkers drink soda
Re:Coinbase outages on Wednesday May 19, 2021 @12:46PM (#27211154)
I would say https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Haber blows him out of the water

>Haber is also considered the "father of chemical warfare" for his years of pioneering work developing and weaponizing chlorine and other poisonous gases during World War I, especially his actions during the Second Battle of Ypres.

but more importantly,

>Nearly 50% of the nitrogen found in human tissues originated from the Haber–Bosch process. Thus, the Haber process serves as the "detonator of the population explosion", enabling the global population to increase from 1.6 billion in 1900 to 7.7 billion by November 2018

Anything past 1.6B is overpopulation, and is driving the holocene extinction, global warming, pollution, etc... all of our big problems scale with population, and removing this natural limitation on our food supply has allowed us to blow the suspension out on all of them

Re:Top Paid LA Lifeguards Earned Up to $392k in 2019 on Monday March 29, 2021 @12:29PM (#26624278)
Public vs private funds. If you told me some private resort with $800/night rooms paid their lifeguards this much, I would think nothing of it.

Being an SRE is a little more of this and a little less scheduled work. You still have standup and plenty of other meetings, though
It's not a UBI experiment until the taxation part of the equation is also included in the experiment. Injecting outside money like manna from heaven is not UBI
Re:Viral 'I'm not a cat' filter is decades-old software on Thursday February 11, 2021 @11:56AM (#26103928)
Seems like the "bogus" part of these bogus charges is that she was successfully staying ahead in the cat-and-mouse game to change which synthetic cannabinoids she was selling faster than the legislature could identify and ban specific chemicals. So she's just as much of a POS as he is.
Re:How r/WallStreetBets gamed the stock of GameStop on Wednesday January 27, 2021 @01:51PM (#25932199)
What's new here is that the sales pitch about shorts needing to be covered has more truth to it (I think, not an expert) than the usual vague promises about a huge turnaround being right around the corner. Usually the argument that other buyers will follow you is based purely on their supposed FOMO
Re:AI researcher Timnit Gebru resigns from Google on Thursday December 03, 2020 @02:44PM (#25293652)
Hopefully google will come to their senses at some point and stop creating roles within the company where the job description is to tie the company's shoelaces together
Re:How to use Reddit to get your first users on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @01:31PM (#25212525)
>How old is the account? How much organic-looking activity has the user done across other subreddits?

these kinds of policies are the death of the throwaway account. many subs don't even allow you to post in the first place now if you haven't ground out a posting history in other subs that do allow new accounts. maintaining anonymity for anonymity's sake has become increasingly difficult over the years on the site

Industrial agriculture has had disastrous consequences in the form of overpopulation, we just haven't felt them yet. Global warming and every other problem caused by overpopulation are all a result of industrial nitrogen fixation and large scale farming producing enough food.

just another crypto pyramid scheme
>I'm fortunate to have a solid WFH environment at home

I feel this is pretty important. I am only renting a room (not making FAANG money) and as such quarantine has me spending nearly 24 hours a day in my bedroom. I can't follow the standard advice of maintaining a separate space for work

Re:Show HN: Skynet Simulator on Wednesday March 25, 2020 @05:21PM (#22688636)
very fun, the game-within-the-game was neat, too
I'd rather get hit with a switch a couple times than be prosecuted for a crime myself, but it's a terrible direction for society to take. You will never be able to restrict police, who are only human, to physically assaulting people only when society deems it appropriate. We have enough trouble as it is with police abuse
people really should be stocking up on psyllium husk powder (metamucil). one roll of TP will go a lot farther when your bathroom is experience isn't "like wiping a felt-tip marker"
Re:Tips for the depressed on Tuesday March 10, 2020 @01:27PM (#22537435)
it is accurate. i don't know if it's helpful to the antidepressant drug user, though. placebos work better than nothing, but not if you know they're placebos
Re:Electricity generation using quantum dots in glass on Friday March 06, 2020 @04:52PM (#22507683)
half of green tech can be thrown out under this kind of scrutiny. there are so many shell games to gobble tax money that ultimately originates in the great wealth fountain that is fossil fuels

the blinders people put on talking about this stuff are incredible

Re:Freeman Dyson Has Died on Friday February 28, 2020 @02:31PM (#22445584)
think about the 2d equivalent - a ball rolls down a hill because the potential gradient directs it that way. a ball sitting on a flat pedestal isn't being pulled in every horizontal direction at once by some forces that are proportional to the height of the pedestal. it's not being pulled horizontally at all

there is zero space-time curvature within the sphere, it's "flat", so there's no force. nothing is "cancelled out", force is the derivative of energy with respect to space. it's like a 3d pedestal (or rather, a cylinder excavated from the earth with a flat bottom)

Re:Monkey Patching in Golang (2015) on Friday February 28, 2020 @12:26PM (#22444427)
Suppose you want to unit test some function you've written that makes use of a library that doesn't implement interfaces. You can either write a wrapper interface for the library and inject this wrapper as your dependency, or you can just use the library as-is and hook the function calls in your tests using OP's library. The first method might be the "proper" way of doing things, but you end up with slightly more cluttered code purely to serve the needs of your unit tests. In the second case, any unsafe code is never going into production

It's sort of like asking "What's a good use of WriteMemoryProcess or CreateRemoteThread". It's not the kind of tool you acquire and then go find uses for, it's something you will resort to only when you have no other logical choice
