Re:Let's remove quaternions from every 3D engine (2018) on Friday January 31, 2020 @03:49PM (#22205554)
In my college in Antarctica we were taught

  x ^ y = y x^T - x y

  exp(ε x ^ y) v ~ v + ε x ^ y * v
  = ε y (x,v) - v + ε x (y,v)
because we use the left-hand rule down under.
Re:Let's remove quaternions from every 3D engine (2018) on Friday January 31, 2020 @03:44PM (#22205490)
But 3D is the D that matters for 3D games. video games are concrete mathematics, not abstract mathematics.
Re:Let's remove quaternions from every 3D engine (2018) on Friday January 31, 2020 @03:40PM (#22205448)
I miswrote. Rotation calculations are represented (in quaternions and in geometric algebra calculations) as a 3D subspace of R^4, with the "extra" dimension accounted for by constraining quaternions to the unit hypersphere.

Rotations do involve magnitudes when interpreted as an axis (2 dimensional manifold embedded in R^3) and a magnitide (0 to 2pi)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis%E2%80%93angle_representat...

SO(3) is a coordinate-free abstraction that isn't relevant to the topic of GA vs Quaternions for calculating concrete values in computer graphics

which is another way of wording "reliably generates and serves improbable events"

Do you think Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Larry Page, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates agree with this statement?

Re:Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent) on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @12:26PM (#22183193)
ToS aren't signed. They are terms of service, not license agreements.

ToS merely need to be disclosed, and the site cna decline service if you violate the terms. A license agreement may subject you to penalties for violating the agreement.

Like hiQ, you can file a lawsuit and try to win. You might want to wait to see if hiQ wins their case.
Re:Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent) on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @12:24PM (#22183165)
Per hiQ's arugment, but not per any existing ocourt decision.
Re:Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent) on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @12:18PM (#22183089)
No, because what one side of a case argues is not the law. What judges decide is the law.
Re:Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent) on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @12:16PM (#22183048)
When is it "damage", and when is it "declining to contribute" ?

Does that mean that ia grocery store offers free samples, I can go in every day and take all the samples, and the grocery is not allowed to selectively prevent me access?
Re:Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent) on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @12:14PM (#22183017)
There's no reason to believe that.

Please read the linked decision before putting words in judges' mouths:

> hiQ argued

That does not mean that hte court agreed.

The judges said that CFAA doesn't apply.

In other words, the judges said that LinkedIn couldn't use the US legal system to force HiQ to stop. Judges didn't say that LinkedIn was barred from using technical measures.

The court did allow a preliminary injunction against LinkedIn, due to the possibility of "monopolies" (to be determined in Court later), pending resolution of that latter question.

LinkedIn might still win their claim to their right to block scrapers via technical means.

Here's what Google says. Ask your lawyer if you want to know what it means.

https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/54068?p=web_app_...

When Web & App Activity is on, you can include additional activity like:

* Sites and apps that partner with Google to show ads

* Sites and apps that use Google services, including data that apps share with Google

* Your Chrome browsing history

I'm not anyone's lawyer. These are questions, not answers: GDPR is about collecting data from you, right? If Site X is sending data about you to Facebook, perhaps that's an issue with Site X's GDPR compliance, not Facebook's?

or

"popping their filter bubbles", or "are generally interested in boundary-pushing ideas", or "are susceptible to the rage-inducing trolls who run fringe communities".

"Affinity for extreme ideas of any kind" maybe a stronger / more common personality trait than "interested in one extreme point in the vector space of ideas".

Re:A Graph of Related Subreddits on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:39AM (#22182479)
The metric (Jaccard distance) is symmetric. The assymmetry comes from ranking: JordanPeterson is more special-interest/intense-interest with a narrower more homogenous audience than the_donald, so it probably has more very-similar subreddits to it than the_donald does. the_donald would have more related reddits but with less perfect overlap in membership.

A broader base of people (about 1/4 to 1/2 of the voting age US public) is aware and supportive of Donald Trump and for a wide variety of reasons, and much more than half at at least aware of Donald Trump. Jordan Peterson has a much smaller following, who are interested in him for similar reasons to each other.

Re:A Graph of Related Subreddits on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:30AM (#22182335)
HN is not the place to file bug reports on Reddit, and people here can't help you find workarounds since you aren't enabling tools that allow you to configure your experience.
Re:A Graph of Related Subreddits on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:27AM (#22182296)
Small request: Can you turn off the initial jumble of nodes before the graph is built and laid out? It's distracting clutter that adds no information.

Animations are fun, but only if they convey artistic or intellectual meaning.

Also, the default zoom level is zoomed in too far (large text, not showing the wohle graph). perhaps this is because viewport resolution/size (phone vs desktop) is not taken into account when chooseing a zoom level (font size)

You might (justifiably) not like it, and it might inspire you to boycott the business or plead for regulatory relief, but it's not an "incident" from their perspective to be intentionally doing what they do to run their business.
Re:Off-Facebook activity on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:20AM (#22182190)
> Obviously the sites are not getting the benefit

How is that obvious?

Surely sites would eventually stop going through the extra effort to maintain trackers if they didn't get a benefit?

Re:Off-Facebook activity on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:19AM (#22182171)
That last part makes sense. If you want a different identity, you need to choose a different ID. Better to make you be more explicit about what you are trying to do (multiple accounts), then accidentally split accounts of people who aren't trying to do that.
Some hedge funds are good at it, and some are bad it. The existence of a winnable game doesn't mean that everyone who attempts it will succeed. Especially since the game is competitive, so if I have better insider information than you, I can take from you you all the money you take from the non-insider traders.
with drawdown on simple bets, the average compounding step per play, for a given edge and bet size, is

    ((1+bet)^(0.5+edge))*((1-bet)^(0.5-edge)))
  = ((1-bet^2)^0.5 * ((1+bet)/(1-bet))^edge

For a given bet size, there's room to make your edge large enough (without exceeding 0.5) to make the (>1) right-side factor overwhelm the (<1) left side.

That's the "..." step in "1 steal underpants, 2 ..., 3 Profit!"

Enron only collapsed because they intentionally destabilized major public-facing national security infrastructure (retail energy markets), and they were incredibly brazen and sloppy about it. If they didn't make as large bets on collateral damage, and they acted with professionalism, they would have been fine.
Was Medallion fund Rentec's only business, or was there other business they could skim from?
