I would expect the monopoly referred here to be the government.
Re:Kysely: TypeScript SQL Query Builder on Wednesday January 25, 2023 @04:13AM (#34516172)
A more relevant meaning is probably a query as in SQL-kysely means an SQL query. Feel bad for Finnish students though trying to google something about SQL queries now in Finnish as most results seem to be about this project.

That has more to do with relegation in European football than anything else. A bottom tier NFL team is at least 2 billion because you know they will be in the league in 20 years. A bottom tier EPL team is likely worth a few hundred billion as it will cost money to stay in the Premier League. The fact that there are football teams so high on the list should tell you of the global brand value they have.
The Congress does not decide the New York local tax rate or how west coast cities handle their forest. You can have a local government and Congressional elections that are not tied to your specific location. As far as I know now the only position that both someone in California and someone in New York would vote for is POTUS.
Re:Software Developer Shortage Is Coming on Tuesday June 22, 2021 @05:14PM (#27597303)
That's really only used for old articles to give context and is not considered to be part of the title.
Because the list has 10 countries and 2000 USD a month is enough for a good life in over 150 countries.
I'm not sure why people keep saying this. The original studies did not study if the vaccine prevents spread, that is true. I'm not certain myself, but I believe that studies done based on COVID spread in countries where vaccination rates are high (at least Israel) point to the direction that it prevents spread as well. Are these not valid data points?
Maybe that's how it works in America, but it doesn't mean it's the same everywhere. And given that the post was motivated by recent events in Europe it doesn't seem too relevant.

In Europe when you go through security no one checks your id. In fact most of the time when you fly inside Schengen with hand luggage only no one checks your id at all. But there definitely isn't something comparable to TSA that would have the information.

What is a neutral country? The flight started from Greece (NATO country) was going to Lithuania (NATO country) and the plane is registered in Poland (NATO country).

Most people on freenode don't give a shit about these conferences. To me it seems like someone wanted to try to help freenode do something cool and used that as a way to cheat everybody and steal the network. Not cool.

As the CEO do you happen to know where I can send a GDPR request? I tried [email protected] which was mentioned on the website but it is not working.

Address not found Your message wasn't delivered to [email protected] because the address couldn't be found, or is unable to receive mail.

Sent an email to [email protected] to see my personal data as GDPR provides me the opportunity. Curious to see what they have.
Re:Berlin rent cap overturned by Germany's top court on Thursday April 15, 2021 @05:08AM (#26818001)
Also good for people who want to move to Berlin as mietendeckel made it much more difficult to get an apartment. Also good for people renting through the gray market of sublets as it makes it easier for them to get a real contract.
I'm 28 and can't wait until I get back to the office. A lot of people like the social aspect of the job and not everybody decides to live a miserable commute away from their office
I don't think that is obvious at all. I would assume most illegally owned guns have been legally owned in the first place so gun laws can have a big effect.
Re:Google AMP Can Go To Hell (2018) on Friday July 17, 2020 @02:10AM (#23867614)
My main annoyance with AMP is reddit because their version is especially shitty if you expect the logged in version. I've found the easiest way to get normal Reddit is to click the upvote button.
r/Chapotraphouse which is mentioned in the title was left leaning. On the ither hand many other right wing subreddits were not deleted. Hard to see how people make this a partisan issue.
I think the opposite. It is correct as a trillion dollars is a trillion dollars, but not useful as it is misleading. It is easy to assumr from these headlines that Apple would be similar in size to country x GDP
I've seen the same in Berlin and I think they are great. The difference might be that most streets already have a fair amount of bikes, so the dockless bikes are nothing out of the norm.
Re:Continuous urbanization in Japan on Wednesday June 27, 2018 @06:55AM (#17407185)
Osaka has a central circle line, Osaka Loop Line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osaka_Loop_Line

The main stations along this line are probably Kyobashi and Tennoji, the latter of which has at least the tallest building in Japan.

I would mainly divide Osaka in two centers, with Umeda being the CBD and Namba/Shinsaibashi area to be the center for people going out.

Sure, most of the things you list are not good. However I don't see anything on the list that has had a drastic change. If you want to know why people commit more suicides now, it would be useful to try to point the what has changed like the article does.
I think I heard recently on NPR that an American making minimum wage earns enough to buy 100k kcal per day. (Sorry, no source)

If you compare that to countries where people actually starve you should be able to see the difference

If ICE has to get worse software that just means you and everyone else need to pay more in taxes. The government has the means to get what it wants usually

Dubai has first class in the metro. You can either buy a first or second class pass.
Re:Measuring the many sizes of a Git repository on Tuesday March 06, 2018 @03:50PM (#16532001)
The Linux kernel has been developed over 25 years by thousands of contributors, so it is not at all alarming that it has grown to 1.5 GB. But if your weekend class assignment is already 1.5 GB, that’s probably a strong hint that you could be using Git more effectively!

Git is only 12 years old, how does Linux have 25 years of history there? As far as I know Linux used patches on mailing lists before git, are those also somehow transferred to the repo?

If you're American that is. If you're a foreigner US companies are not far from Chinese.
It doesn't mean you can't buy indexes or other diversified assets but rather that you should stick with what you choose and not try to time the market.
