Wait, people change their beliefs in response to new data? That's unpossible!

"The domestic shipping industry is an economic behemoth in Florida, contributing 52,140 maritime jobs and $9.6 billion to Florida’s economy, according to a 2014 study by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The Port of Jacksonville is the nation’s hub for Jones Act shipping to Puerto Rico, and Florida ranks second among all states in jobs affected by the domestic maritime industry."

The most impressive version of this I have seen is from NASA/Boeing: https://youtu.be/-D5N_OnZ_Tg

I cannot imagine the amount of work that goes into something like this.

As long as you don't try to do anything about it, you can discuss whatever you want?
Re:Anthony Bourdain on not having debt on Thursday March 16, 2017 @12:22AM (#13882464)
People always say this, but nobody can ever point to a solid example. Do you have hard numbers that government social programs are less efficient than charity?
Now, if only we could get Brugse Zot in the states...
Re:UK votes to leave EU on Friday June 24, 2016 @09:17AM (#11969547)
How is this different from having to account for different state and local taxes when selling software inside the US?
Re:UK votes to leave EU on Friday June 24, 2016 @09:13AM (#11969530)
Yes. I believe Texas Republicans call for independence with some frequency.
I'd be thrilled if this meant I could rent any of the recent Marvel movies. Prime and Google video seem to be pushing the buy option exclusively for new movies these days.

I have looked everywhere for a national dollar per student database. Do you know if such a thing exists?
Re:Hackathon Be Gone on Sunday February 28, 2016 @11:24PM (#11193572)
The worst is company hackathons. I will always remember the look on my boss's face when I told him I was quite happy to participate in the (mandatory) 24 hour hackathon, as long as he paid me for my time outside of normal business hours. Turns out it wasn't so mandatory.
Re:US military finds F-35 software is a buggy mess on Friday January 29, 2016 @09:56AM (#10995513)
I wonder if a "Tech Surge" like the one used to repair the ACA exchange would help here, or just end up causing more trouble. I'm afraid Brook's Law comes into effect here.

I've seen it mentioned in at least one article that the VTOL requirement is driven by the USMC's institutional memory of Guadalcanal. They don't want to get left on the beach without air support again, so they insist on having their own aircraft with VTOL capability. How valid a concern that is is..up for debate, in the era of nuclear supercarriers and jet aircraft.

Re:Ten years later, did Boston's Big Dig deliver? on Tuesday January 05, 2016 @11:40AM (#10844165)
They have made noise about running the blue line to the Charles m.g.h. station, which would solve a number of problems. It would require a stretch of elevated line on Cambridge street right in front of Mass General, so no idea if it will ever happen.

Olive oil is being produced in Georgia now:

I've gone through a couple bottles and was not disappointed.

This reads like an 80's anti drug commercial.
What area are you in that you are worried about airborne nicotine building up to fatal levels? If there is that little airflow, you should be more worried about suffocation.
The big dig catches a lot of flack, but the value it added to the city is almost incalculable. The North End alone has probably doubled in land value. In the long run, it will more than pay for itself.
Re:Why Every Country Has a Different Plug (2009) on Monday October 12, 2015 @12:37PM (#10375607)
Is there any research on the net cost of this confusion? Or is it just one of those things where we can easily quantify the switching costs, so we don't bother with the cost of the status quo?

It's like right hand drive cars, which seems like an easy win to get rid of, but are so wrapped up in culture that we are pretty much stuck with them.

Re:IBM is still making ThinkPad keyboards on Monday October 05, 2015 @02:04PM (#10333571)
There is a special place in hell reserved for the designer who swapped the function and control key placement on that keyboard. Thankfully you can change it in the bios.

"Scheveningen" is the one that stopped me in my tracks.
His proposed amendment is here:

And yeah, section 2: "The First Amendment shall not be construed to limit legislation enacted pursuant to this article, save to assure content and viewpoint neutrality. Neither shall the First Amendment be construed to limit the equivalent power of state or local legislation enacted to regulate elections of state or local officers. Nor shall the First Amendment be construed to vest in any non-natural person any unalienable constitutional rights."

John Scalzi's essay "Being Poor" is a really good read along these same lines.

Climate change denial reminds me of Lysenkoism. The facts must serve the ideology, and if they don't then it is the facts that are in error. The obvious solution, then, is to ban talking about the facts.
