Re:Much Ado About None: Sentinel Values in Python on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:55AM (#50323274)
I see, thanks. Though this feels like something that would always have a better alternative than returning Some(None). Probably a new enum, or in Python's case, exceptions (e.g. instead of returning a value if the document is missing, you'd raise DocumentMissingError or something)
Re:Much Ado About None: Sentinel Values in Python on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:27PM (#50320404)
Can you explain or give an example of nested optional types? I don't quite see how that makes sense
Re:Turning a solar power system into its own backup on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:06PM (#50310765)
If I understand the article correctly, there is no boiling water, it uses hot air only. It says the concentrated solar generates air up to nearly 1000 degrees, and that's used to heat up compressed air to run through a turbine, with the eziting air at around 250 degrees. Burning fuel would replace the initial source of hot air. Burning fossil fuels to get hot air and then dumping 250 degree air to the environment doesn't seem very efficient, but the article doesn't mention anything about the efficiency of the process with either source.

Does say the hot air at the end can be used for industrial processes, so it might not be completely lost

Based on the estimate in the article, Australia had 60k reservations. That's a 9m initial loan. Probably not significant for Tesla, but not nothing! If you bought Tesla stock with that money, spread across 2019, that'd be worth nearly 200m now so I guess that's a good estimate for what Tesla got out of this?

Rockstar is American right?

Not geothermal I would think?
The BioPykrete name is kinda funny. As opposed to the regular pykrete, made with the famously not-bio wood pulp
Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? on Thursday October 15, 2026 @01:52AM (#50099717)
I'm sure it would also be salient to me if I went to the dentist and saw a hygienist some big disfigurement on his face. But if I then spent a whole paragraph talking about how grotesque it was when writing an article about the dentist, it would (rightfully) come across as weird and mean spirited
Re:Do not install Zod 4.6.6 – might be infected on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:53AM (#50053398)
From the repo owner:

> Seems like a git push credential of some kind was compromised, not an npm or GitHub token. Still working with the GitHub team to get some better forensics on what/how. The attack consisted of malicious commits and tagged pushes to main.

So it didn't go through review, it was pushed straight to main. It also seems their publishing pipeline was already secured against this sort of thing:

> Zod's release flow was already secured against kind of attack via trusted publishing and a dedicated GitHub environment for secure deployments. Zod's release CI worked as designed and was already secure against this; NPM's malware scanning didn't prevent any malicious here.

Good inspiration, thanks. I intend to add a few more things like a section for notes/pictures and ranking by importance, but this looks like a good starting point
> Projects priority list which tells me what to do each day based on last update for each project (each project has a desired frequency of work and it prioritises by "lateness"). Checks git activity and RSS feeds to see what I'm neglecting

I've been meaning to find or build something like this for a while, specifically for house maintenance and projects. Did you make this yourself? Available anywhere?

Given this is a free service, what's the endgame of this "evil plan"? I don't know much about SSL and such so I assumed lowering this lifetime has some safety benefit
Re:Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too? on Monday October 05, 2026 @03:04AM (#49961577)
Yes, but it's delicious, delicious maintenance. I'd take the joy of eating good food over plugging into a wall to recharge any day
Re:Martian Chaos Terrain on Saturday October 03, 2026 @02:24AM (#49941808)
I've been reading the Mars trilogy (by Kim Stanley Robinson) after it was recommended on an HN thread a while back, and it's been on my mind to look into what the "chaos" was. Pretty neat
This is a take I hadn't heard before, pretty interesting. I wonder if there are already any fiction out there where some widespread religion turns out to be an automated mass surveillance and policing system gone awry. Neat concept
Re:Show HN: Radius – A Meetup.com Alternative on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:52PM (#49791632)
I would love a meetup alternative so I gave this a look, here's my experience and feedback:

Open up the site, (click away cookie consent banner), only way to see nearby events is to give location permissions for some reason (why? I just need to know what's happening in and around Amsterdam, not within x kms of my current actual location), look for a way to search by city while getting distracted by what seems to be the live event log of random people in different countries.

Go to "browse groups", click map view, now I have a teeny tiny globe on the bottom pretty much entirely covered by symbols. Drag the slider up, zoom in enough to see bits of the map in between symbols (which is pretty hard because it doesn't let me zoom if either of my fingers happened to be on a symbol, which again is most of the screen), finally find the Netherlands, and there's a single cryptic symbol. Tap on it, nothing happens. Tap a couple more times, then think to drag the slider back down to find that it's two "communities" of one person each.

Overall, not a very pleasant first impression. I'd put a nice search bar in the landing page, for searching by location or by group type. I'd also put some categories to filter by in the groups view.

I think the hyper-local discovery thing is pretty neat. Kinda reminds me of Tom Scott's pub flare idea. I'd much rather see that above the relatively pointless activity feed and events.

Also, the website has strong "vibe coded ui" vibes. I have no idea if that's the case or not, but the colors, the cards, the "x people online" pill, all just scream llm-ism, which makes me less likely to trust it.

Are you implying that the meat industry as it is currently, producing nearly 400 million tonnes of meat annually, isn't mass production? Why would we assume that lab grown meat, even if it's mass produced, would be much cheaper than that well oiled machine?
What does that have to do with the price? If it's mass produced, widely available, thoroughly tested, and the same price as regular meat, why wouldn't you prefer it?
> all things that makes being a human worth all the pain

Running fast or jumping high are what makes being a human worth all the pain?

Re:I came to write THAT paper with Leslie Lamport on Friday August 21, 2026 @02:23PM (#49392044)
Are there any good examples of where removing the leading "how" has improved the title? Or some list of title filtering rules with concrete examples of why they're implemented?
What's your setup like? Do you host it on your own hardware or the cloud? Is it exposed to the internet?

I have a homelab setup with my media server stuff and frigate (for security cameras), and they're only accessible via tailscale if I'm not at home. It would theoretically be easy enough to throw immich in there as well but I don't know how the app will behave when it can't reach the server half the time

Re:Pizza Box Project Stack on Sunday August 16, 2026 @05:29AM (#49318391)
I have something similar for my electronics projects, but a bit more "physical" I guess. I had trouble with having multiple ongoing projects, and parts/tools for them intermingling and taking up desk space. I ordered some cheap plastic trays from AliExpress (I think they were meant to be parts of a bathroom organizer or something), which have enough depth to contain boards, components, specialized tools, etc., and stack well. When I need to shelve a project (usually because I'm waiting for parts or I need the desk space), I put everything related to it in an empty tray and put that tray on top of the stack. When it becomes unblocked or I have some spare time to work on something, I pull out the tray and already have most of what I need
Re:For the love of god stop using CPU limits in Kubernetes on Friday August 14, 2026 @07:47AM (#49297522)
From the docs another comment linked:

> The CPU request typically defines a weighting. If several different containers (cgroups) want to run on a contended system, workloads with larger CPU requests are allocated more CPU time than workloads with small requests.

So I guess limits _would_ protect other pods to a degree. Though I agree that it doesn't seem worth the tradeoff of your pod getting constantly interrupted while the rest of the box is sitting idle

Re:Google launches Pixel 11 Pro Fold on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @01:44PM (#49276113)
I remember my old nexus had it, and it was very customizable. I had it flash different colors for different chats. Definitely funny seeing this make its way back as if it's some new revolutionary feature
Re:What's Under Your Feet in New York City? on Sunday July 26, 2026 @04:31PM (#49062111)
The video does have something like that, it's not labeled though, rather he goes through each part and highlights the part he's talking about
Re:I also filed the corners off my MacBook on Thursday July 16, 2026 @06:07AM (#48932500)
I'm like this for everything _except_ paper books. I grew up sharing books a lot, books I finished would go to younger kids in my extended family or my mom's students, and I got a bunch of books like that as well. So we took a lot of care keeping books in good condition. I don't buy many paper books anymore, and ones I do buy tend to be new and stay with me, but folding pages or breaking the spines still feels wrong to me
Re:Briar Is in Maintenance Mode on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @11:46AM (#48922614)
I use signal a lot (probably has 30-60 minutes screen time per day), and still notifications are extremely finicky no matter what battery optimization settings I tweak. So I'm leaning towards some apps being blessed

Thanks for posting this, it's a run read and the pictures are amazing/hilarious. The faces on the first picture are so funny and expressive
