Re:Microsoft launches Windows 10 on ARM on Tuesday December 05, 2017 @06:12PM (#15857021)
How is this remotely relevant to the ARM support announced?
Re:Introducing Surface Book 2 on Tuesday October 17, 2017 @01:36PM (#15492890)
You could, but not without sacrificing many of the features that make the Surface Book unique. The pen support in Windows 7 is significantly worse, and face authentication wouldn't work. Windows 7 isn't very usable on a tablet. To use the GPU when you reattached the tablet you'd likely have to reboot the machine, also a much slower operation on Windows 7.

If you don't want the above features, you could get a machine that runs Windows 7 well with good hardware specs for less money.

What's wrong with remote desktop for mobile work? Online work only, but most dev environments require internet anyway.
People are more likely to notice the inability to install traditional Windows apps than what search engine they're using.
Re:VM Escape: QEMU Case Study on Friday April 28, 2017 @03:29PM (#14222350)
This is a case of legacy code left in an important attack surface. I doubt many people need a virtual floppy drive today.

Up to 10k in vouchers. I don't even know how someone with a non-travel job would use that many coupons in a year.
PCs do not have a standardized BIOS. BIOS configuration options vary widely, and often mean different things between different BIOS vendors. UEFI is standardized but sometimes difficult to adopt.
Re:Why I left Mac for Windows: Apple has given up on Sunday March 05, 2017 @07:47PM (#13799920)
There is an option to turn them off.
Device drivers run in kernel mode and can bugcheck the machine. Microsoft can certainly provide tooling and help device driver writers write reliable drivers, but the device is still responsible for it's driver.
Re:Finding a bug in Win10 BOOTMGR when chaining to NTLDR on Friday January 27, 2017 @09:30PM (#13504488)
XP support ended years ago.

People who use a touchscreen laptop are used to scrolling with a touchscreen. It has nothing to do with skill level of the user.
Re:Mark Zuckerberg Is in Denial on Tuesday November 15, 2016 @11:28AM (#12959426)
Clinton prefers a $12 minimum wage because outside of cities small business wouldn't be able to keep up with $15. Clinton wanted $15 minimum wage to be passed in cities that can handle it, and has explicitly supported people organizing those efforts.

From the primary debate:

"While Clinton believes $12 an hour is the right federal minimum, she is not steadfastly opposed to the idea of a $15 hourly minimum nationwide. On Thursday, CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked if she would sign a bill from Congress setting the federal minimum at that level (something that would be politically improbable). "Well, of course I would," she said."

Sounds like your friend ran into a bug. I don't see a reason to assume malicious intent unless Microsoft refuses to fix this issue.
It's for quality and personalization, not for ads. This is Terry Myerson's blog explanation of data usage.

Wow that is incredibly shady. I doubt that's even legal.
Re:Windows 10 “Developer Mode” on Wednesday July 20, 2016 @10:45AM (#12129376)
Isn't that what developer mode is? A switch to set lots of settings that a developer is likely to want.
Re:Windows 10 “Developer Mode” on Wednesday July 20, 2016 @10:43AM (#12129359)
Source? Windows doesn't use telemetry for advertising.
Surface Pro and Surface Book are definitely consumer devices. As are Band, and Xbox.
Wine is fine for getting around an expected limitation, but would you run your workloads on wine in a production datacenter? It would be a disaster.
Azure runs on Windows.
Right- Office and Windows began talking to each other in 2011, when the consent decree ended. The silo structure at Microsoft was almost required by the government.
Re:FBI Statement on Clinton Email System on Tuesday July 05, 2016 @12:15PM (#12037481)
What Comey writes is that other people in similar circumstances have faced security and administrative consequences- such as being fired, and their security clearance revoked. That sounds reasonable.
Re:Intro to kernel debugging on Sunday June 26, 2016 @03:50AM (#11979830)
Kdnet is a faster and easier to setup than COM ports for debugging Hyper-v VMs. I couldn't find it on MSDN, but there is a blogpost here: http://withinrafael.com/how-to-set-up-synthetic-kernel-debug...
Re:Why we challenge Microsoft’s battery test on Thursday June 23, 2016 @02:02PM (#11963106)
They could have turned on an ad blocker for Edge as well.
Re:Why we challenge Microsoft’s battery test on Thursday June 23, 2016 @01:59PM (#11963070)
Microsoft didn't just do a battery test, they also release statistics based on Windows 10 telemetry showing that Edge has better battery life than Chrome, Firefox:

"In addition to testing battery life internally, Microsoft also looks at tens of millions of PCs that send telemetry data to the firm, Weber said. And what it sees there is simple: A small advantage over Firefox, but massive gains of about 50 percent additional battery life when compared to Chrome."

Re:Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B on Monday June 13, 2016 @11:30AM (#11894650)
They shouldn't have been using the consumer version. I can sympathize, but that business both violated their license and ignored nine months of news and popups about the windows 10 update.
Re:Microsoft Edge WebGL engine open-sourced on Thursday June 09, 2016 @01:29PM (#11870876)
MS doesn't have such strong verticals anymore. The end of the consent decree, the "One Microsoft" initiative, and the massive reorg from a couple years ago all went a long way towards breaking down barriers internally.

Windows releases OSS projects as well, it's not only the dev div team that values open development.

Re:How the Windows Subsystem for Linux Redirects Syscalls on Wednesday June 08, 2016 @03:51PM (#11865089)
Windows also now supports nested virtualization.

It's not typical for people to make 50k after college these days.
Private student loans are often cosigned by older family members. It doesn't make sense to take risks when defaulting on your student loans puts your parent's housing at risk.

Your comment places you likely in your early 30s, meaning you probably entered the job market before the recession when there were more jobs. If you went to college, you went before the next 7-10 years of continued tuition increases.

The realities of the economics facing young people today aren't so simple as your comment suggests. Most of those young people are living at home to be frugal. And no young person worries about missing a show, its all streaming anyways.
