I remember a mod called Millenaire which had some pretty advanced NPC AI behaviour where they'd build cities together and go to war with each other. It would be cool to see it return if something like this were possible

This matches my experience too. The counter argument I've heard that NHS dentists wait until something becomes critical to do work rather than intervening preemptively. I don't know which approach results in better outcomes for dental patients...

I feel the same as you - but I'm fortunate enough to be young, have a cushion of cash, no mortgage, no mouths to feed. I'm guessing you're similar. We might feel differently without these.
