Re:Smoke has caused temperature forecasts to go crazy on Wednesday September 16, 2020 @12:24PM (#24494187)
Yeesh. I'm sorry. I'm in CO and even the levels here get me all of the symptoms you mentioned. Last week I drove 1700 miles and only escaped the smoke during a summertime snowfall. It rebounded and while driving I was suppressing a mild anxiety attack bc there's nothing you can do to escape it.

Driving at sunrise/sunset reminds me of the original Mad Max. Expect real and depressing.

From what I can tell, those countries are now racist based on their names and should be fired.

History books should be burned.

No human should ever speak to another human again.

But we all need to be in offices in close quarters once the pandemic ends, so that we can fire each other for accidental using the word "she" in a conversation.

I've run into a number of dads that drive really hard, always at the expense of sleep. They seems to die early, 40s 50s. Might be possible.

I'm in a similar kids/work situation and it's going very rough at best. But then again I'm a completely terrible parent, barely capable as a normal functioning adult, and my kids inherited the coked up hummingbird trait from their mother.

Also joke answer: get multiple young children.

But also my personal answer: multiple young children. Around 4-5pm they are hungry and it's time to do X & Y with them. Overall domestic responsibilities are so demanding that if I don't rip out of work and start cooking, cleaning, bathing, teaching, lawn work, etc as fast as possible, I'll be lucky to get to sleep before midnight.

Re:Is Dark Mode Such a Good Idea? on Friday June 12, 2020 @02:10PM (#23501974)
I first noticed the blue light issue when xmas led lights were put on trees around the holidays. Blue blurry things. Now my credit union has their sign in blue and I can’t read it.

10 years later I developed astigmatism in both eyes. Dark mode is really blurry in some settings.

The blue light thing, as I understand it, is where you first begin to notice astigmatism. The wavelength is shorter and a very slight astigmatism becomes more apparent.

I'm not sure what to think about that. I live in CO and people here that don't sunscreen are so much more damaged than others I know in different states. It's drastically obvious. So I sunscreen my kids like crazy. I keep thinking that I'm at least giving their adult selves the option to look 50 at age 35 if they decide to quit using sunscreen religiously. Unsure if this is the best approach. Their doctor loves it though.
Re:Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever on Thursday May 14, 2020 @12:28PM (#23181515)
Other than having not worked from home for many years now (which I am very happy to do when it works out), your experience is highly relatable. For the kids, I'm sad and wish I could do something more for them. But work abounds.

Shrooms?

If the citizens of the internet didn't vehemently demand blood for any misstep, would it still be the Internet?
The rate is increasing, it's slightly worse. It's looking really really really bad. The vaccine's purpose will be to stop this from happening yearly for the rest of human history.

Word. If I didn't dislike people we could be friends.
Re:Turning Off Autoplaying Previews on Friday February 07, 2020 @09:24AM (#22266165)
Same here, caused anxiety. We must be a minority bc I started avoiding Netflix completely unless I saw a show in the news that I wanted to check out.
Is it the year of the Linux desktop?!?!
Re:Working for someone vs. doing your own thing on Wednesday January 15, 2020 @09:15PM (#22061084)
I keep explaining this to my kids. They are still refusing to let me sleep. Why do they treat me this way?

Me watch many tv and have great word speaking.
Re:Shopify CEO says long hours aren't necessary for success on Sunday December 29, 2019 @11:56AM (#21906918)
Some months, with effort, domestic responsibility and my personal health make it impossible. But my whole family has been sick a lot this fall.

Edit: I still feel tremendous pressure to work more/longer.

Re:Shopify CEO says long hours aren't necessary for success on Friday December 27, 2019 @08:01PM (#21896289)
In my 20s I worked 80-90 hours for ... 4-6 months. It was day job, then side hustle software that I was very excited about. Now in my late 30s with kids, yeesh. Honestly it's impossible to get 40 hours in some weeks.

Edit: no drug use

Re:Having Kids on Sunday December 15, 2019 @01:52PM (#21798056)
Lol I thought this was my post for a moment. Hi copy of myself!
Re:Having Kids on Sunday December 15, 2019 @01:51PM (#21798044)
Excellent point! 2 or 3 times a year my wife offers to let me have a few hours off, but all I want to do is sit or lay down. Which confounds her, but she gets about 40x more work/kid free time than me, so kinda makes sense.
Re:Having Kids on Sunday December 15, 2019 @01:13AM (#21794770)
I have twins, they are 4, I do almost nothing other than work and be a dad. I struggled with that fact for a little while, but accepted it over time. It takes 100% of my effort to do my job, be a dad, take care of the house/cars/meals/etc, and fit in workouts and sleep. I typically go to bed immediately after them. My workouts are “dad workouts”, finely tuned brief basement fitness routine to try and stay fit enough to be a dad and somewhat mitigate the effects of a desk job.
Re:Sites with dumb password rules on Friday September 06, 2019 @12:46PM (#20897244)
Haha, that's terrible.

I get annoyed by the security questions in a different way. If they are all based on "firsts" such as first school, first address, first friend, etc, I'm screwed. I moved 23 times growing up and went to 9 different schools. I have no idea what my "first" things were.

Re:Preserving Laptop Stickers on MacBooks on Thursday July 11, 2019 @02:05PM (#20413846)
Same! Identification. Except at work mostly, as there is an ocean of identical machines.
Re:AirPods with Wireless Charging Case on Thursday March 21, 2019 @12:24PM (#19454140)
I don't own any, but I do have a 3rd party wireless headset. For me, ditching the cable means avoiding the inexplicable and over-the-top rage I experience when wired earphones/headphones get suddenly yanked on the occasion they catch on something. Once in a while I'll meet somebody else that has this type of reaction. It's weird.
I've got twin 3 year olds. Took a while to accept the fact that I have no time to do "things" anymore. And like another commenter, I measure free time in minutes. First time I got 30 minutes to myself (9 months into parenthood) I nearly wept.

I'm at a point now that I'm happy to spend time with them and, after numerous false starts (that were crushed by repeat month long illness moving from person to person, random sleep problems/night terrors lasting weeks, etc) have abandoned all outside aspirations. And I'm ok with that.

I do suspect things will lighten up in time. Perhaps I'll entertain side projects one day in the future.

I love the private toll road idea! I'd never imagined them all being that way before.
This guy ️for president. Took me several weeks to adjust. One of the best computing changes I've ever made.
As an aside, I switched Caps Lock to ESC a few years ago and after the 6 weeks(?) or however long it took to fully adjust, it's fantastic. I wish I could bring Caps Lock -> ESC joy to everyone.
Better yet, why not change your clocks slightly, every day, following the changing sunset/sunrise, to fully optimize each day? It'd only take 5 minutes a day to do all of my clocks.
Those rackety automobile contraptions! Don't get me started! :)

I am half serious though, cars are annoyingly loud and (obviously) dangerous. I'm loving the eerily quiet electric vehicles. And cities creating carless areas of town or carless days.

Re:Don't Buy Anyone an Echo on Tuesday December 05, 2017 @01:23PM (#15854144)
+1

Bunch of we-don't-like-options luddites in here. I'm surprised people aren't modding their cars with a hand crank b/c

> why can't you just get the crank, walk up front, and start it manually, instead of turning a key like a princess.

Yelling at my home is on my top 10 favorite things about this century so far. I tried for decades to utilize the force to get the lights on/off or grab the tv remote. Burst a blood vessel in my eye trying one night. Never worked.
