Upwork is a shitty and unethical company. Their website sucks and app doubly so. They make a lot money but have the worst product.

So next time, any one on HN thinks about writing yet another todo app, think about disrupting freelancing industry and upwork. It won't be cool and won't make HN top page most likely but it will most likely be a product and monitory success.

How do we know puppy killers aren't donating money already using traditional means?

You mean not aging really well? Just compare rise in gold prices in last 10 years to equities or commodities or real estate or crypto.
Re:Databases in 2021: A Year in Review on Thursday December 30, 2021 @12:49AM (#29734056)
You can always use an ORM which provides better usability for developers. End of the day rdbms model is suited for a wide variety of workloads and there are several other factors in play while choosing a good db including eco system, cloud vendor support, migrations, performance etc.

Their new focus on businesses integration is causing a lot of spam to end users from unsolicited business messages. There is no way to escape it.

Bought that something from someone a few years back and gave your phone number to them? Thanks. Now their hot deals messages reside right next to the messages from your family and friends.

I'm expecting good amount of market share loss once a good alternative is found that focuses purely on personal or group messaging and not on business spam.

And that makes it okay to make private communication public?

Isn't it hypocrisy to argue to for privacy of the living (HN being pro privacy) but not of the dead.

Re:My negative views on Rust on Thursday December 23, 2021 @03:32AM (#29659860)
It takes a couple of lines to call any API in Rust using reqwest: https://github.com/seanmonstar/reqwest

I'm not sure where this 6 hours for matrix bot thingy comes from. A better comparison would be to write something from scratch or use comparable frameworks.

Re:My negative views on Rust on Thursday December 23, 2021 @02:55AM (#29659661)
Another 'I don't like Rust - I don't use it - but I like writing blog posts about it' article.

I wonder if there are more lines written about liking and disliking Rust in the world than actual Rust code at this point.

I hope the dog is stronger than these guys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAWy9DqsnU0
I doubt that. Try shooting an arrow at a crow (obviously not killing it) or throw a stone at a group of monkeys the next time chance presents it self. Not a good idea. One of my childhood nemesis were a group of crows from a tree nearby at which I shot an arrow with a home made toy bow (none were even hit). Those things harassed me for months before eventually forgetting (forgiving?) the incident :)
In Malaysia not in India. In India, laws don't allow killing of even rabis infested dogs forget about monkeys. Not to mention monkeys are considered sacred.
Strength doesn't come into the picture with monkeys. They attack by biting and scratching and often from hidden places like tree tops or rooftops. In many parts of India, the dogs are afraid to even bark at them.

That said, adult monkeys are pretty big (3.5-4 feet) and aren't all that light weight.

Anecdotally, a baby monkey fell into our neighbors house through bars on the roof and a group of almost 100 monkeys surrounded the house and took them all hostage till the baby was given back.

Re:Postgres is a great pub/sub and job server (2019) on Saturday December 18, 2021 @08:50AM (#29604462)
The libraries create their own tables, triggers etc during initialization.
Re:Postgres is a great pub/sub and job server (2019) on Saturday December 18, 2021 @12:01AM (#29601812)
Yes but then 'enterprise architects' can't put their shiny cloud certifications to use. They need pubsub regardless of the scale because that's what is recommended by big cloud. And of course the companies also don't mind because there is no immediate devops cost for it. The problems like complexity of debugging, lockin won't hit home at the time of design.
Re:Postgres is a great pub/sub and job server (2019) on Friday December 17, 2021 @11:56PM (#29601789)
Not necessarily. Many languages like Java already have queuing libraries that operate on rdbms through JPA. So not even a single additional line needs to be written for this to work. We got ours working in a day and it works great. I don't know if other languages have these libraries but I'm inclined to believe they do (at least nodejs has).
There are already several (razorpay, paytm, payu) that do exactly that. They do charge 2% flat fee which is still high by Indian standards (comparing to cash and upi). So merchants do try custom solutions with bank gateways to reduce the fee.
There is no exception for recurring payments. Also unfortunately this applies to all online merchants and Payment aggregators regardless of size and certifications. So as it stands a separate auth is needed for each transaction which is completely regressive and precludes a lot of convenience use cases. My guess is that they are doing this to make Upi more convenient in comparison. But I won't be surprised if its just another short sighted we know it all mentality decision from the regulator who has a history of u-turns.

Edit: Looks like they do allow card tokenization (not part of original proposal) which should address a lot of use cases

Here is the commentary about the original proposal:

https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/banks/news/rbi-wants-...

Here is the one after push back from industry (Which allows tokenization):

Re:I started a paper website business on Tuesday December 14, 2021 @12:41PM (#29554567)
You are not looking at this from user perspective. It's very much a paper based flow for them. Where it wins is that it lets people forget about digital devices while creating their content while letting them choosing to share some of it online post that. There are magic notebooks, magic pens etc that use ocr to achieve the same but you still need to do the creation using those devices (which are at least twice the $99 price).

Because you are a developer, you are thinking in gpt/ocr/website building etc. Lot of people especially older generations eager to share stuff will find this useful if not amusing. For them its write something on paper and get a link back. Real users don't care about WordPress plugins.

You mean like the rest of the people on Instagram?

Even if it's not Instagram, that is what most politicians do to stay in power (advertising things done by them and hiding the things detrimental to them)

Any open source options similar to comet chat (but obviously may be with less functionality) ?
Just grasping at straws. Without taking into consideration, the magnitude of co2 getting emitted, we can even blame cavemen with their cook fires for global warming.
Re:I resigned from Twitter on Monday November 29, 2021 @11:51AM (#29382037)
I expect the Trump ban to be overturned starting next year. And also Twitter to become lot more neutral. Whatever someone's political beliefs might be, it is bad for business when you alienate good number of users and also result in encouraging other alternatives to the already crowded social media space.

And shareholders expect this which is why shares are up today.

Re:Ask HN: Best way to spend $25k in GCP on Monday November 29, 2021 @03:03AM (#29377432)
It really shouldn't, but stories like this irks me a lot because I have been trying to get credits for my bootstrapped startup for sometime and there is just no way to get them unless you are part of a accelerator or took funding from well known investor.

Of course, Gcp, Aws, DO don't owe me anything and these programs must be successful based on their data but still shows the irony of the world where resources aren't matched well against needs.

Re:I Don't Want to Be on Call Anymore on Sunday November 28, 2021 @10:45AM (#29369765)
I would say its a superiority complex : thinking software engineers are paid well and hence need to be ready to sacrifice more to maintain this superior position.

And of course also because the risks of bad or interrupted sleep is not recognised widely and mostly ignored.

(1) is hilarious. Do they also expect enemy combatants to make an appointment and provide the location of the meet :D
