You mean Trump and star shield, right ?

The two networks are quite different despite SpaceX initially doing the MVP work for it.

Actually the entire whois database is "privacy protected" because of GPDR (if my memory is correct)

Thankfully, because I used to get postal scams for the hundred or so domains I used to host.

You good for tinfoil bro?

Re:MicroPythonOS – An Android-Like OS for Microcontrollers on Monday October 13, 2025 @11:00AM (#45569052)
In countries other than the USA there are strict controls on personal information.

The UK/European countries have GPDR for example.

Re:Plan 9 from User Space on Monday September 29, 2025 @04:49PM (#45418593)
I was correcting the user's "plan9" comment.

It's a port of a collection of plan 9 userspace to a non-9 operating system.

Perhaps you've now learnt something

GG

Re:Plan 9 from User Space on Sunday September 28, 2025 @09:52PM (#45409715)
Yes, not plan9.

I despair at your (and GGP) lack of comprehension

Re:UK officially rolls out digital ID scheme on Friday September 26, 2025 @08:22AM (#45385675)
Yes, and to be paid via PAYE you need a NI number.

The prove right to work is a slightly newer thing thats additional

We've seen this before and we'll probably see it again.

Re:UK officially rolls out digital ID scheme on Friday September 26, 2025 @08:06AM (#45385533)
Not really. British governments have always been increasingly authoritarian.

The stated reason is to stop illegals working.

Unfortunately we have an ID for working, called a national insurance number. We literally can't get legally paid without it.

So a National ID card ... Is irrelevant. You still need this number for benefits, etc.

I've got an NI number, a driving license and a passport. Not to mention a NHS number.

I don't need another form of identification to link together everything about me so my government can leak everywhere.

Sorry, you're not trying hard enough to find bad cases of terrible professional software.

Besides, the article reads like a noob using xcode for the first time.

Re:Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage on Monday September 15, 2025 @05:46AM (#45247883)
True.

I'm in rural UK. Blessed with fast fibre. However if the power goes out, it's a proper blackout. I'm slowly sorting out the ups situation along with nut

When the power goes out or fibre dies I cannot rely on 4/5G as they die also, so starlink is the only option

Re:Running our Docker registry on-prem with Harbor on Sunday August 31, 2025 @05:04AM (#45081658)
Not S3, but I use longhorn to store persistent data on my clusters.

Sometimes you'll need admin skills, but only if you spread your cluster out over availability zones or poor connections

Re:Apple typewriter memo (2020) on Saturday June 21, 2025 @06:40PM (#44341266)
Huh? It was fairly common for typewriter ribbons to be destroyed where confidential information was typed, as it was possible to acquire previously typed characters.
Re:Fallom – Coding interviews that let you use AI on Monday June 09, 2025 @01:44PM (#44226989)
I'd rather there be no coding interviews.

Honestly it's disrespectful.

In two aspects only

1. Everything is a file. 2. A command does only one thing well

There's no init, fstab, etc etc etc. Very little of your Unix muscle memory will work.

It’s not as unix-y as you think.

Go try it

I just know a lot of children will be introduced to orienteering by their parents due to this ;-)
I've a similar story, but 35 years ago, a situation which was entirely my fault, 100cc and 'shit'.

Ended up with a sore knee, bent forks and a realisation that leaning plus braking in the wet is a great way to make a nice groove into the asphalt!

Hmm the NDK is for userspace, you can remove functions out of the standard libraries, but the Linux syscall API will likely be untouched

Apple does this too for its more locked down devices.

I've been coding since the 80s too. I had assumed from your hubris and ignorance that you were young. My mistake, it's clear that you're merely an idiot.

Enjoy the weekend, happy in the knowledge that I shall no longer be engaging with you.

Re:Show HN: Go Plan9 Memo, Speeding Up Calculations 450% on Sunday October 20, 2024 @09:56AM (#41895389)
My dear summer child. My degree trained me to build computers from logic, write an operating system, write userspace code and applications (with a side of AI) all before the year 2000.

I don't know where you did your degree or when. But my friend you are objectively wrong.

Termux no longer runs because it no longer allows (possibly using Linux capabilities?) subprocesses from around Android 10. Android 12 if memory serves actually starts killing background processes.

No hacks. Unless your degree says using the POSIX fork()/exec() API as "hacks".

Please don't embarrass yourself further. It was quite painful reading your prior response.

Re:Show HN: Go Plan9 Memo, Speeding Up Calculations 450% on Sunday October 20, 2024 @06:14AM (#41894344)
No. The Kernel IS the operating system.

No, the user space is (mostly) busybox, in both cases.

The user interface is different sure.

The fact that termux (a Debian userspace) is able to run on android at all is enough to dispel your claims.

Stop with the mental gymnastics, you're ill prepared. If you wish, I can buy you a dictionary.

Is kotaemon a fork of langchain?

I've been browsing a little and I see very similar APIs being used...

... Not being snarky, genuinely interested in the etymology of these libraries.

Roll back a bit.

It's the CEOs who enable and managers who want to micromanage that are wanting the return to the office. Threating to fire people if they don't comply.

That is, by definition, control.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly with your second paragraph.

It's very difficult indeed to argue, when you're giving very little information to back up your assertions.

If you're not given clear briefs, and you accept the work, then it's clear to me that as an industry you've allowed this to go on too long ;)

Let's face it, you're unable to be shifted from your viewpoint. So the utility of this discussion is approaching zero.

I hope your situation improves. Especially with the cranky software! I'm very curious what the software does as I'm always looking for a niche product to build!

Actually, if that's not in your contract, it literally isn't your job to train up junior members of your team. Of course, we're not monsters so we do.

You're paid to do what's outlined in your contract nothing more.

Headphones on. Crack on with the job at hand. That's exactly the way to go. Having to be distracted by annoying co-workers who don't understand that, is a benefit of WFH for sure.

Who wants to be constantly interrupted by random folk when you're likely working to a deadline?

That's because when you're suddenly distracted by "just a quick question..." It takes you an age to unwind the stack and try to realign back to what you were doing.

That 5 minute 'quick question' becomes 15-30 minutes of getting back into the zone. Send an email, an IM, post the question on the slack channel for anyone to answer.

Just. Don't. Disturb. Me.

You think it's subjective. "My and other people's opinion", who? Really? Or are they just nodding and saying that you're right because it's actually impossible to talk any sense into you?

Take a moment and meditate how toxic the behaviour you described above actually is to the real needs of the business, and not your feelings.

The world has moved on. Maybe you should too?

Short answer is no. But I can see why you think that. Some great ideas are derived from pub conversations, and team building exercises.

Teams (and companies) usually end up in a state of groupthink, a bit like the rule of thumb "you are the average of the five people that you're closest to".

However I'm usually hired to think outside that social structure, and if I'm not, I bring it with me anyway.

Besides, there's nothing stopping you from talking to someone on slack, or your team's WhatsApp group, or private conversations.

People are much more likely to drop their social masks and tell you what you really think if you're talking one to one. Regardless of the medium.

I've not read anything that requires that you need to be in person for any of this?

Sure nurses/doctors of all disciplines are almost always needed in person. Though there has been a lot of progress in telepresence in the last few years.

But what were you thinking about?

If you can elaborate a role that does require in person collaboration, I'll discuss it for sure.

But you are aware that videoconferencing has been around for decades now?

As I've said in earlier posts, if you have to physically manipulate something or its a performance of some kind then it's unlikely not to be able to be done remotely.

I'm not here to destroy my own argument. If you think I'm wrong then you need to present your own argument.
