That it's such an elementary claim is the reason for the pushback. What's the point in saying something obvious?

Every time Facebook has stepped in to "fix" something they have been criticized by one side or another. They have learned that it's safer for them to do nothing and then blame the algorithm when enough people complain. No one gets fired when the algorithm does something wrong.

That BBC quote is a bit misleading. The photo on the left is what the painting looked like before restoration, not what it looked like when it was originally painted. Parts of it had been damaged and repainted over multiple times in the past which is why the restored version looks so different.

Towelliee (Garcia) has been streaming on Twitch since the start. He's not the most popular streamer by far but is one of the few still streaming from back then. It will be interesting to see if newer more popular streamers like Dr. Disrespect can maintain their viewership.
> As part of his plea, Bridges agreed to turn over the stolen bitcoin to U.S. agents.

He likely got less time for agreeing to turn over his private key. That might have been a bad decision depending on how many years he would have gotten otherwise. Those 1,600 bitcoin are worth over $10 million at the moment.

Re:After the end of the startup era on Sunday October 22, 2017 @01:41PM (#15527927)
Weird that an article on the end of startups doesn't mention the likely next big area for startups: Genetics.
The fact that Uber hasn't suffered any noticeable loss of business suggests that this is false. Or at least that it doesn't matter if people love you or not.

And before the press it was the church, the community and the family.

Because there is no licensing issue because this project hasn't been released. This blog post is a preannouncement. When it's released and its known what license it uses then it will become a pertinent discussion.

That's basically what Tesla is doing with their Model 3.

Just in the past three months bitcoin has gone from $1500 to $3000 to $2500 to $1800 to $2900 to $2500 to $3400. You'd make more with a lot less risk just waiting for a dip and buying.
Coinbase warned people for a month that they wouldn't support Bitcoin Cash.
It wasn't long ago that Facebook was being criticized for not enabling Safety Check:

https://techcrunch.com/2015/11/15/facebook-says-it-will-enab...

>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg committed to turning on Safety Check in more human disasters going forward, responding to criticism that the company turned on its safety feature for Paris but not for Beirut and other bombings.

> I've said it before here, and I'll say it every time it's relevant

What makes this one of those times?

But it's not a perfectly regular piece of news. It's a rumor. Hacker News isn't a gossip site. If/when Sam announces he's running the announcement will not get flagged.
Re:Thank You, Yakkers on Friday April 28, 2017 @06:52PM (#14223812)
It got filled by Facebook.
Re:Suicide of an Uber engineer: Widow blames job stress on Wednesday April 26, 2017 @02:14AM (#14200851)
I didn't flag this, but there is an argument for doing so: People commit suicide everyday. Many because of job stress. That this person worked at Uber doesn't make it newsworthy.

> Also look at how Zuck bought Oculus and turned it from VR fan favorite to this horrible Facebook division that inches away from PC VR everyday and into social and mobile spaces.

Because that's where the users are. PC VR is going to be a very small niche in the larger AR/VR space.

Facebook shows you stuff that you have shown interest in or has been shared by your friends. If you want to expand the range of opinions you see in your feed follow some less liberal people.

It's getting flagged.

> For example, as of this instant in time, there is an article about Angular2 which remains on the front page while more highly upvoted and commented articles about laptop security

For front page rankings time matters more than total votes. A submission with 10 votes can be ranked higher than one with 50 if those 10 votes came in minutes rather than over the course of a day. It's not surprising that controversial submissions that get less up-votes (and more flags) don't get ranked as high.

Re:Stories that Hacker News removes from the front page on Monday March 13, 2017 @09:25AM (#13857566)
Just a few flags from high karma accounts can knock a submission off the front page if it isn't getting enough counter up-votes. It wont be marked as flagged.
Re:Facebook’s code quality problem (2015) on Monday March 13, 2017 @07:50AM (#13856946)
Agility trumps code quality. Stability can be addressed downstream (which Facebook does with heavy testing and rollouts of changes). Code quality problems or not, Facebook has been more stable than its competitors (MySpace, Twitter, etc.) and faster at pushing out changes.
Re:Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around? on Tuesday February 28, 2017 @02:20PM (#13756888)
Live sports rights are expensive. ESPN has been feeling the pain of having to pay the high prices while losing subscribers. Twitter wouldn't do any better with their ad-based monetization.
These AI pieces remind me of the FUD surrounding genetic engineering in the 80s and 90s. Which is ironic because with the advent of CRISPR and related discoveries genetic engineering might actually be the threat to worry about now.

Edit: typo

> Have the social network aspects of Facebook been destroyed by fatigue

Combating this is partly why Facebook bought WhatsApp and spun out Messenger into its own app.

More like it's become ubiquitous.
Re:Mark Zuckerberg: Building Global Community on Thursday February 16, 2017 @06:45PM (#13664692)
Facebook's business today is completely different from what it was 10 years ago. Mobile ads now account for 80% of its total ad revenue (on total revenue of $27.64 billion). A lot of people questioned if Facebook could make any money from mobile when it went public.

If this was the case then she would have won the patent fight. The Patent Trial and Appeal Board thought otherwise. Did you read their 51-page decision?
