Re:Google AI gets cagey when asked who won the 2020 elections on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @06:52PM (#50282088)
Interesting idea. I like it because this way you would get relevant info directly from the involved sources.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @06:48PM (#50282041)
EU statistics say that per km traveled there are 28x more deaths when traveling by car then by train. With trains you basically don't get passenger deaths except those which end up in media. Also in the train related deaths almost everything are not passengers but people on tracks or level crossing users.
Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @06:37PM (#50281931)
The accidents/deaths in Europe have been dropping over the years. But I think the main difference is that while trains are extremely popular in Japan, in Europe it's been for decades under attack from governments who push roads and driving instead. This leads to underfunding and hollowing out of the train services.

Classic example seen all around Europe is partial privatization where it's often some state owned company that manages the expensive rails maintenance and unprofitable (but required) train lines while private companies get the profitable lines. This often leads to public opinion that trains are subsidized too much which leads to more decline of the services.

Another complication is that Japan is one country with one system where everybody speaks same language but trains in EU have to connect different systems together and it is hard to come to unified systems and laws around trains.

I would also add how greatly improved living in Spain has been. The change in last 15 years is dramatic. Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga even Madrid are top of the list of best liveable cities. I am not sure how (probably local politics) but almost no other cities in europe managed to become so great.

People are using Adobe for completely different reasons. They are so established in creative industry that everything rotates around their software including it's bugs and quirks. Schools teach only Adobe. When you go to high end printers they have processes prepared for output from Adobe software. There is whole market of specialized software plugins for Adobe. For the industry professionals it's just shared ground and cost of doing business.

The AI clones won't easily change that unless they were exact 1to1. If it was that easy to get rid of Adobe the monopoly won't be there anymore as things like Affinity have existed for a while and are free. Affinity is in many ways even better version of Adobe suite, faster, more stable, allowing to be more creative. But the friction is extreme, because if you need to collaborate or be in any way part of the industry then Adobe is expected so you need it anyway.

Yeah the worst software i know was developed by programmers
Which is where gov software is heading.

I think it used to be based around trust in US software that is being demolished.

It is actually not unrealistic to imagine laws for eu gov software only to allow Mistral or Aleph alpha models. They are pretty good - on par with deepseek atleast. There are all kinds of similar requirements already from software stacks to databases.

What I would see even more likely are requirements of no agent commits, use of only human written/vetted code under their name.

Thank you for correction.
Re:Butlerian Jihad on Saturday October 17, 2026 @03:37AM (#50128843)
I am not sure if you are joking but HBO has series Dune: Prophecy which is exactly from that era and is most likely leading towards butlerian jihad.
Re:Artificial intelligence is capitalism's final destination on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:35AM (#50119715)
AI is not gonna destroy it's creators in Skynet, Battlestar Galactica kind of way. It's going to destroy it's creators in Dune, Wall-e kind of way. Butlerian jihad happened because it was destroying humanity, by not allowing humans to grow. It made them weak and careless.

AI will alienate and depress us all to the point of not wanting to live.

Re:Open-Source Rust Alternatives to Adobe Apps on Friday October 09, 2026 @05:36AM (#50018184)
It's "free" since Canva bought it. They basically use it as funnel for people to buy Canva subscription (online sharing, ai features).

They keep adding features and recently added scripting which was one of the last things that kept professionals from using Affinity. And you can see it in industry (atleast graphic design) even big names are testing how to switch.

Ehm, Affinity...

It's not surgery is it. It's programming language and their maintainers like it.
Portuguese wine and also olive oil are super high quality. In my country price wise it's on par with Italy/Spain/France. But make no mistake it's also on par quality wise.

Some of the olive oils have their own unique profiles and i also really like the lighter wines from portugal.

There is whole genre of authors (Ernst Nolte, Viktor Suvorov, David Irving) who argue WW2 was all preemptive strike, that middle classes felt under threat and that soviets were preparing wide actions to take over europe.

It's revisionist history. Constructed arguments that quickly fall apart - like Yes Hitler was afraid of Bolsheviks but that doesn't explain why he invaded all the other countries France, Poland, Denmark, Norway... many more.

The repeat of the same trick on current events with Iran/Venezuela/Cuba is very telling. I doubt anybody believes that US attacks Iran because of communism. But yes all the US conflicts are because of communism.

More likely explanation is that big business backs fascism to crush social causes. Fascism exists to save capitalism from the people.

Yeah that archives your current site. But how does it replace Wordpress? You need CMS when you need to update your site.
I wonder where you think where all these people would left to? I can think of project or two but it's very short list.

I also don't think they are non existent. But there is also another factor of timezones. I have the impression that there are big differences between the continents. Like depending on time the most top comments might be leaning much more left or right.
Re:Obscura: The first VPN that can't log your activity on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @07:21AM (#49814361)
Let's not have perfect to be enemy of good (or ok, or better than nothing).

In case of Mullvad it's a niche product with many alternatives. Using something else is viable and it is interesting to many in the niche because their ties to far right was secret up until recently.

It might be harder with something like Basecamp or Figma if your job requires it.

It is almost impossible with things like Google.

Yes we should have these comments in every thread about big tech. It doesn't mean we shouldn't do something about Mullvad.

Re:Obscura: The first VPN that can't log your activity on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @06:44PM (#49809324)
That indeed can be a problem for many.
That's why it's fashion... I wouldn't say these are comparatively turds at all. I mean some Hoka are OK (except the terrible blue logo) but I don't think you would find single ON shoe thats nicer than the Nikes you linked to.
This is actually not at all style of On shoes. The New Balance / Adidas / Nike 90s "dad shoes" have been cool for almost a decade now (Balenciaga released their "dad" sneaker in 2016).

On shoes look like shoes for retirees right now. Teenagers don't wear On shoes.

On shoes are also very ugly. I don't think they have a single pair that has any style. I would love to try them but it looks like shoes for retirees.
Whats surprising to me is that all the brands you mentioned are just so ugly and simply not cool. Nike tries to position itself as Apple of sports but it probably doesn't work that well outside of high tech market because there are still many brands doing the high end at leas as well as them.
Re:From Git to Fossil on Sunday September 13, 2026 @04:01AM (#49681236)
This sounds more like some elitism. Who cares how your coworkers got there, the point is to have good history at the origin. People don't need to see your dirty laundy, there is nothing interesting about it.

Pickled savoury watermelon is something i discovered not that long ago and it really surprised me. It's amazing. I otherwise don't care much about watermelon but pickled it gets so much flavor. I know many people who can't handle it because it "doesn't taste how it looks".
