Re:Ask HN: How many of you hold an amateur radio license in your country?
on Friday March 06, 2026 @06:40AM (#47273759)
I've been licensed for a couple of years. All my QSOs are short and sweet, mostly activating and hunting POTA/SOTA contacts, where the activator prefers to have short QSOs in order to activate the park/summit. I have no interest in having a conversation with the other amateur, at most I would exchange what gear I'm using and what power I'm running. That is it.
I like building kits, QRP, CW, and building my own antennas. I only make contact with other people to be able to improve my skills and validate my gear.
My father has been licensed for nearly 50 years, he loves the technical side of the hobby, I've made more contacts over the last 2 years than he has in 15 years. There are others like you.

Re:What Killed Penmanship?

I have been journaling by hand for a while now, partly in the hope that it might improve my now atrocious handwriting. I thought that time and practice would help me get better, but it's only very recently that I have discovered that my penmanship only improves if I, just, slow, down. I have now come to terms with the fact that I have a maximum speed for handwriting, and it is much slower than my typing speed. The advantage is that I now have more time to think when writing by hand.

I do this when I get stuck in a rut when making music. Imposing limitations encourages the unexpected.

I've used Symfony for years, and Django for 2 years full-time, and I have to say that I find the Symfony documentation is much easier to learn from.

"84% of apps on the App Store are free" - I bet this also includes free apps with in-app purchases, which is most free apps these days.

If you have backups, but have not recently tested restoration, then you do not have backups.

Re:Ask HN: Which startups treat non-working hours/days with respect?

What you describe is a little bit working for free. If you’re not being paid for those hours and you do not have a stake in the business, then you are effectively giving money to the owner.

I think that's the point being made, they are not limited by this decision, in fact they find it more efficient.

I've had my Samsung TV for 3-4 years, it works just as well as well today as the first day that I bought it. I've never connected it to the internet and get streaming capabilities using 3rd party devices. Dumb TVs are much better than shit ones.
