I have been using turnstone with local models more. The open models are getting “good enough” that paying $100 or $200 a month is making less sense.

Either they agreed to put the back door in their routers or someone got paid off.

It’s not so much an op’s issue as an architecture and code quality issue. If you have ever dug into the GitHub enterprise self hosted product you get an idea of the mess.

This is a common sentiment from my peers who have not spent any real time with the frontier models in the last six months.
They tend to poke the free ChatGPT for ill defined requests and come away disappointed.

Seems like a strongly coupled set of events that leaks their internal culture. “Customers are not worth the effort”.
Re:François Chollet: The Arc Prize and How We Get to AGI [video]

Today’s llms are fancy autocomplete but lack test time self learning or persistent drive.
By contrast, an AGI would require:
– A goal-generation mechanism (G) that can propose objectives without external prompts
– A utility function (U) and policy π(a│s) enabling action selection and hierarchy formation over extended horizons
– Stateful memory (M) + feedback integration to evaluate outcomes, revise plans, and execute real-world interventions autonomously
Without G, U, π, and M operating llms remain reactive statistical predictors, not human level intelligence.

After twenty years building out products in Silicon Valley I have come to the point where I have lost the plot. None of the projects at my last company seemed interesting, none of the projects I see other companies seem interesting. All AI, no substance.
So I’ll just sit at home and build robots till something interesting does pop up or my robots gain sentience and decide I’m the problem.

Solves everything for everyone or solves everything for those who have economic means to adopt the solutions. One is a dystopia, the other is a utopia.

You mean ring? Nest is a google property. Doesn’t even use aws, so pretty sure Amazon would just give the police a dumb look if they were asked for footage from nest cameras. Also last I checked nest was one of the better players in this regard requiring warrants and had rigid public data retention processes in place to limit what could be pulled.

Looking back over my relatively short 30 year career across an assortment of tech companies (hp, google, microsoft, apple, etc) I would add that this mostly changed due to what was rewarded. Around 15 years ago when the first vestiges of OKR review processes and the idea of "impact" started to form; We shifted our designs from things that made our long term outlook better (simple) to things that were easy to explain to management how they had HUGE impact (complex).
Be right back, writing a new design doc for a messaging service and protocol spec to go with it that I can use to pad my next review cycle.
