Yeah and communist society is about who has the best connections to the people in the party who decide who gets what. And socialist societies are about not making too much money because you'll lose the subsidies.
Which is more than enough to put it out of balance, depending on where it is.

Do you have a link to the study? I'd love to check the study design
For private insurance in Europe you have to sign disclosure documents for all your doctors and medical history, at least in all 5 countries I have insight in. It's perfectly legal and standard.
Re:Why We Terminated Our Partnership with Microsoft on Tuesday January 28, 2020 @10:35AM (#22170306)
Same happens in brick and mortar stores. Im germany a drug store chain had a decade lomg partnership with an organic products / plant milk producer who did a lot to buold the market, and when the market actually got more mainstream and profitbale, they kicked them out and replaced them their new house line of organic products.
Re:Medications that change who we are on Saturday January 11, 2020 @07:44AM (#22019595)
That's not Western, but American. In Europe much weaker painkillers are prescribed due to risk of addiction, and in places like germany a lot of placebo (= overpriced homeopatic bullshit)
That's a bold assumption. Such algorithms are developed wwith training sets, not just by employees randomly clicking around. They wrote that 189 algorithms were submitted, there were surely a few developed by non-racist, diverse people.
Re:US Spaceforce.mil Goes Live on Saturday December 21, 2019 @02:04AM (#21850070)
Several countries have shown the capability of destroying satellites, not to speak of spy satellites and gps, and the fact that the spaceshuttle and its military sibling was designed to scoop up satellites and bring them back to earth.

Space was never not militarized.

There is research showing male rhesus monkeys to have preference for wheeled toys

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2583786/

We shouldn't discount possible genetic influences on preferences.

Re:Screen Use Tied to Children’s Brain Development on Sunday November 17, 2019 @04:04AM (#21557149)
That's probabaly the wrong causation. Instead, parents of higher intelligence, education and cultures that values education make more money - and not only pass on their genes, but also are more vigillent or capabale to educate their kids.
Just that you know - it's ok no to post, if you have nothing substantial to say. Spreading hateful slander adds nothing to the board.
Re:Building a CRUD App with Datomic Cloud Ions on Tuesday November 12, 2019 @06:17AM (#21513244)
No, you're completely wrong. Graph databases, document databases, K/V stores and so on have completely different models, guarantees and performance characteristics than relational databases.
Re:Sweden's 100 explosions this year: what's going on? on Tuesday November 12, 2019 @04:03AM (#21512678)
Isn't it completely off topic for this board though? On reddit I'd agree with you.
Re:Building a CRUD App with Datomic Cloud Ions on Sunday November 10, 2019 @08:01PM (#21501338)
Obviously, if you put all data into one table, it's not a complex query. (But then you also just reinvented document databases with its own set of problems.)

Even having them in several tables is not rocket science, OP was just trying to give an easy example of types of queries that are easier with datomic than with sql.

Re:Building a CRUD App with Datomic Cloud Ions on Sunday November 10, 2019 @06:56PM (#21501035)
Both of you are missing the point. Once you normalize, car color would be an attribute on the car table, and to map those you need many-to-many lookup tables. It can be done obviously, but it's more effort to do, maintain and update. Depending on your requirements, graph db like features can provide an easier abstraction.
When I let my 5 months old investigate my keyboard, he changed my code, started the compiler and locked the device within 30 seconds. The secret? They use both hands. The give away? They re-press the same keys often, so the result would be a lot more repetitive.

Reddit is definitely being gamed, started 1-2 years ago. And it's a lot harder / impossible to identify fake recommendations, so I'm very suspicious of it.
Re:Why Enterprise Software Sucks on Friday October 11, 2019 @01:16PM (#21226382)
>Totally agree, but it takes a really strong product manager to stand up to a sales person with $10K in revenue from an enterprise buyer "if we just add this one feature they want".

Lol, let's be realistic. If a PM is in the situation to decide that and does so, in a few days he'll find himself in a meeting with some higher ups to discuss how to find a way. (Unless of course 10k is insignificant for the company and there's already a hard roadmap for higher value projects.)

Re:Sorry, we can't join your Slack on Friday September 06, 2019 @12:59PM (#20897372)
People do this because they want to know that you're available for the conversation. Like ringing the phone.
Problem solved: There should be no "opinion" at the workplace outside professional topics. Unless you're the person in charge of the Tibet strategy, your opinion should stay at home.

It's a workplace, not your buddy's couch.

That's not real, it's meant to be "satire".
Re:Anxiety Looks Different in Men on Tuesday August 13, 2019 @07:02AM (#20684512)
5-htp is associated with increased anxiety / panic attacks. Found out after I got one. (Racing heart, palpitations out of nowhere, spent a night in hospital doing bunch of heart tests.) There is very little research on it, because it's not patented, but try pubmed etc. iirc it increases anxiety especially in the first days, weeks then it levels out.

Btw its scary that they asked 500 morrocan muslims in Spain and were able to recruit 38 extremists.

Re:Berlin’s Popular Shopping Streets Will Go Car-Free on Friday August 09, 2019 @03:57AM (#20652165)
You should visit Europe once, you'll see that life here is different.

Specifically regarding Friedrichstraße: It's in the city center, brimming with tourists. 3 major subway lines have stops there. Few cars drive in there as it is, because you have bigger streets nearby that are better connections. If you still want to go with your car, you just park in a parallell side street, there are even parking garages if you don't want to look for a spot.

Having it car free will be lovely for the tourists, cafés and restaurants will put out tables.

The same was done in other city centers like Budapest or Vienna decades ago, and it worked out extremely well for everyone involved.

Their brain is not developed yet, especially critical thinking and social capabilities. It's not just a question of explaining / learning, they often don't have the mental capabilities to understand whats going on and can be taken advantage of.
Re:The Hidden Costs of Automated Thinking on Thursday July 25, 2019 @04:30AM (#20523642)
Is it "bias" if it's true? The issue is that we want to override statistics and distort the analysis for ideological reasons, but that's not a fault of the algoryhm, it's a feature request.
Did you even read the article? 40.000 people went there.
Re:US 'launched cyber-attack on Iran weapons systems' on Sunday June 23, 2019 @04:21AM (#20253910)
Is that smart? Isn't that just a free pentest for Iran, so they can close some holes?
