News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

ohdrat

Have gotten 6 for decades, but I used to swim/run/yoga. Now I don't do anything because there's no time and am still productive, but need lots of caffeine and morale boosters, like I traded a couple pairs loafer mesh shoes I didn't like for a high end pair of proper fitting ASIC running shoes at Nordstrom's today. In fact I lost a couple hours sleep just thinking about trading those shoes today...
Re:Socratic method to teaching by asking on Tuesday October 03, 2017 @12:41PM (#15393753)
If you're Dad, dumb questions are the only way to get a word in edgewise.

They definitely do not want your input, they don't want your experience, or any of your thoughts or reflections... but it can be surprisingly effective to just ask dumb questions.

Isn't official title "facilitator"? :)

You can do a lot of preparation and perfection, over years, and finally get up there and suddenly realize that you are not an entertainer, or even a teacher, and don't want to be either of those, even though the assumption was that this was a good idea, or the main idea. Then what, you're the guy from the Advanced Bashing The Shell talk, or a like guitar player who does not want to play for an audience, what do you do?
where's the Rocket Hub? Seriously how long is Docker Hub expected to float up there? Some are good quality, all the versions of tomcat for example. How long can such quality continue to exist?
"they" refers to the business creating the software--extjs or docker.

It's viral, any connection whatsoever, not sure where they draw the line. GPL is just not enforced except when it comes to selling software licenses.

Smaller vendors are making money from turnkey k8s. There are at least two I won't mention.

Docker is out on a limb with the dynamic mesh, nobody else is using the p2p gossip protocol that I know of and there are problems, and Docker paid-for support is just dropping tickets related to networking issues making this work. The service outages caused by mesh gossip problems are simply measureable by NewRelic free ping synthetic monitors. Docker is getting paid--they are falling down on support.

thank you, makes sense now. why do they think we think that you can take an open source thing and make it closed source? All you can do is force them to buy commercial licenses by using a GPL on Moby. That is common use of GPL after the fact (see ExtJS history), but I'm not sure how they get around the viral aspect of GPL when they are using source from GPL project in their commercial offering. They'd have to be completely separate. If tomorrow the free "CE" product went away, what would happen? Imagine if we had to pay for the Java runtime or JDK.
Re:The Art of Writing One-Sentence Product Descriptions on Tuesday April 18, 2017 @03:55PM (#14142306)
Read old TV Guide plot summaries, e.g. Mr Ed, Season 1 Busy Wife: Carol gets wrapped up in a woman's club and completely ignores Wilbur. It's up to Ed to try and help her overcome the obsession.
Adjacent seems like just low-hanging fruit. What about triz-type patterns or silly patterns like lateral thinking that activate dormant attributes?
Re:WTF is a container? on Thursday October 20, 2016 @11:48AM (#12753359)
no it's worse now. There's also all the PKI required compounding the pain and suffering.

Phusion baseimage-docker seems to help.

Worth nothing Atlassian stepped back and does scaleout approach using regular cloud instead of container orchestration technology. https://www.atlassian.com/company/events/summit/2016/watch-s...

Also worth noting you can take away all the PKI and registry pain and have instant scaling with the registry by using cloud store for registry and having Jenkins gatekeeper be the only writer, all dev and production nodes use the same store only readonly.

Re:Microcontainers – Tiny, Portable Docker Containers on Tuesday February 02, 2016 @04:56PM (#11022989)
I predict that the term "micro" will be replaced by the term "modular", and that docker will create a replacement for the microcontainer named the modular loader/container.
