And you're welcome to implement them and submit them as a PR.

The yt-dlp contributors are not in the business of writing or finding JS runtimes, they're trying to download videos.

As of somewhat recently, Kotlin has a language server: https://github.com/Kotlin/kotlin-lsp

Using it in vscode, while not perfect yet, is starting to be alright.

Asahi is only supporting M1, and partly M2 I believe. M3 was enough of a change that there are no drivers for it.

"I can't stand the word empathy. I think empathy is a made up new age term that does a lot of damage" -- Charlie Kirk, who would be very angry at your condolences apparently.

But then again, when it comes to quoting a culture war grifter, you can find a lot of stupid ass quotes.

Sorry, the "npm ecosystem" command has been deprecated. You can instead use npm environment (or npm under-your-keyboard because we helpfully decided it should autocorrect and be an alias)
It's not, because Apple purposefully lied on their marketing material. Letting a 3090 go on full blast brings it pretty much in line in perf/watt. Your 3090 will not massively thermal throttle after 30 minutes either, but the M1 Ultra will.

So, yes, if you want to look good on pointless benchmarks, a M1 ultra ran for 1 minute is more efficient than a downclocked 3090.

Re:996 on Saturday September 06, 2025 @03:26PM (#45152158)
No, it isn't. Every single definition of violence includes forms other than just physical.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines violence as "the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation

Re:996 on Saturday September 06, 2025 @01:17PM (#45151091)
A company is quite literally the one of most violent environments you could find yourself in (especially when talking about the united states). Violence isn't just physical: a single person having the right to decide whether you live or die (because finding a new job isn't always easy, because they don't care if it's a tough time in your life, etc), whether you thrive or you're being miserable. A single person having the ability to make 8+ hours of your day hell, able to turn it into the most alienating thing you've ever done in your life.

You speak from a position of privilege, where you could reasonably expect to find a job quickly should anything happen. That's not the case for the vast, vast majority of people.

>But that is strictly because of the fundamentally violent nature of the concept of a state, which does not apply to companies or corporations.

Putting aside the fact that we've established you're wrong about companies: no, absolutely not ? Democracy isn't better because state violent. Would democracy be unneeded in a completely pacific, disarmed state ? Would democracy be the best political system if suddenly the majority decided that beating up brown people in the street is legal again ?

I'd encourage you to read a little bit more about political theory and how societies have formed. Your reading is that of a stereotypical tech bro, and that's just not good for anyone.

Re:996 on Saturday September 06, 2025 @01:08PM (#45151006)
996 done on your own time without expectations of it being done can be understood if you're excited about it. It's dumb, it ruins your health and your social experiences, but whatever, you're usually young and dumb. A good employer would actively tell you to slow down and manage your energy if it goes on for too long..

996 mandated by the company is 1/ illegal 2/ straight up illegal 3/ a clear signal that they do not see you as a human being.

Worst case scenario, 996 is dumb. Not a super high bar to clear.

Re:996 on Saturday September 06, 2025 @01:05PM (#45150973)
>Who have no experience of the reality of working long hours themselves?

The vast, vast majority of investors are nepo babies that inherited dad's company and his trust fund. The rest of them that may have worked have deluded themselves into thinking it was because of their "hard work" they got there

So uh, yeah, they're dumbasses. But even then: they don't care that long hours have no significant benefit: the people that will accept 996 will do it for the same salary as someone doing a 9-5. Don't anthropomophize investors, they never see people, they see numbers.

And for the same reason, you don't _have_ to do Path of Pain, or Pantheon.
Re:Liquid Glass? That's what your M4 CPU is for on Thursday September 04, 2025 @08:02AM (#45126310)
>you never compute individual pixels because you never need to

Pixel shaders are looking at this laughing at you. PS_OUTPUT is a single pixel whether you want it or not. PS wavefronts are usually very small, so you're still going to be doing a lot of sampling.

Re:Liquid Glass? That's what your M4 CPU is for on Thursday September 04, 2025 @07:53AM (#45126249)
>3rd party UI frameworks can't copy it without a massive performance hit.

Do you believe pixel shaders are some unique magic that only Apple has the secret sauce to and noone else can use? There were some efficient implementations of liquid glass for flutter before the iOS beta was even released. Glass effects are dime a dozen on shadertoy, they're one of the most basic effects you could learn to do when learning about texture sampling.

The platforms that will take a large performance hit are the ones that can't drop down to the native platforms, i.e. the web.

Re:Liquid Glass? That's what your M4 CPU is for on Thursday September 04, 2025 @07:40AM (#45126146)
No, Hashimoto is a dumbass and definitely has no idea how GPUs work either, or how compositors work.

Sampling has a cost. Doing it with the previous frame makes it cheaper, but when half your products are running at 60FPS you can't afford to do that, so they're sampling the current frame.

Additional composition work has a cost, additional pixel shader work has a cost, additional video memory bandwidth has a cost. Glass effects that might sample pixels way outside just neighboring pixels have a cost.

Is liquid glass as expensive as some heavy duty visual effects like HBAO+, or lighting a scene with a hundred light sources? No. But pretending it's "free" is a dumbass take, and Hashimoto writing half baked shaders once for ghostty does not make him an expert in GPU performance. GPU running for longer and having dependencies on other passes is, fundamentally, more work.

(Additionally, the top answers to that tweet are a who's who of dogshit tech influencers and wannabe rendering dumbasses regularly having the worst opinions one can imagine. Quite telling)

Re:Apple pulls iPhone torrent app from AltStore PAL in Europe on Thursday September 04, 2025 @04:23AM (#45124950)
No, an iOS 0day _is_ less valuable. Every exploit acquisition program pays out more for an Android RCE than it does for an iOS RCE. And it's not surprising: give iMessage a mean look and a .png that looks funny and it breaks under the pressure.

The rest of the thread above is merely the delusions of an Apple fanboy, followed by dozens of people listing out reasons why an iPhone is more vulnerable to attacks, both from external actors _and_ from Apple collecting massive amounts of data and having total remote control of "your" device.

Re:Next.js Is Infuriating on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @05:21PM (#45109214)
yeah | it's | so | much | better | with | bash | tr | cut -d' ' -t5 | jq .entry[].text | sed -i s/who/evenknows/g

Anyone who has ever maintained a semi complex set of bash invocations and pipes knows it's a fragile incantation that breaks anytime you look at it funny, or something in your chain produces unexpected output.

Powershell, while absolutely horrible to read and only slightly less horrible to write (hey look, proper auto completion instead of trying to cut on the 4th, wait no sorry 5th, ah fuck it's the 6th there's an invisible space) at least produces consistent and reproductible results.

No, your python script doesn't count, it makes me do a pip install requests. Oh, sorry, pip can't be used like that, gotta run apt instill python3-pip or my whole system breaks.

Re:Next.js Is Infuriating on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @11:14AM (#45104165)
Windows had most of these APIs _before_ UNIX ever dreamed them up. You can jerk yourself off about the superiority of io_uring all day long, but it had been in Win32 for 15 years prior, and has kept compatibility throughout. I can't promise that io_uring will still be in the kernel by 2040.

So, yeah, speaking in hindsight is really easy.

PS: no, the UNIX way is also shit, just in a different way.

Journalists ? Judges ? What's that ? Real americans get their news from random propaganda accounts on X.

>The amount of money you can get for a iPhone 0day confirms it.

Less than for an Android 0day then. Yes, it's quite telling.

Re:Unfortunately, the ICEBlock app is activism theater on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @07:47AM (#45101818)
No, that is merely what the US government alleged. There's an allegation from a suspended cop that he is a gang member because he wore a Chicago Bulls hat, and that's all ICE is basing itself on to call him a gang member.

The court said not to send him back to El Salvador because he applied for asylum, and was granted asylum because he faced dangers in El Salvador. Not because he's a gang member, which are allegations that have never been proven.

Re:Unfortunately, the ICEBlock app is activism theater on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @07:37AM (#45101699)
ICE blew up a family's door with explosives, geared like tacticool nerds equipped to capture Bin Laden because one guy blocked them with his van.

The whole point of this was to show the consequences of not complying with the brownshirts. Shoot one of them down, you might well discover they have the budget to buy F35s now.

>Some of the border states where they’re doing this like Texas and Arizona I’d say no more than three houses.

Great news: they've been doing this to thousands of houses in the very states you mention. Just not the white ones.

Re:Unfortunately, the ICEBlock app is activism theater on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @07:34AM (#45101666)
You're being naive. ICE has had _zero_ problems taking away legal immigrants. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the most notorious case was an illegal immigrant, granted a right to stay and work by a judge, and spent months in a prison. Forgetting your papers at home (having an ID on you is not a legal requirement. Nor is having an ID in the US, which is another set of problems. Nor is actually getting any legal immigration documents, since the systems are setup to make your life as miserable as possible)

ICE does not behave like a well mannered cop that will check your papers and let you go. They're an unregulated fascist militia that will blow up your door while your children are sleeping because you stopped their car two days ago, and will take you away simply because you're being too brown for their liking today.

Re:Next.js Is Infuriating on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @07:16AM (#45101509)
Windows has had envvars since before Linux existed. It also has FindFirstChangeNotification (or ReadDirectoryChangesW if you hate yourself) since before inotify existed, etc.

Windows has pretty much everything you can dream of (although sometimes in the form of complete abominations), it's just that the people employed by Vercel don't give a shit about using native APIs well, and will map everything towards a UNIX-ish way of doing things.

Re:The future of 32-bit support in the kernel on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @07:09AM (#45101449)
I wish there were strong enough words to tell you about how few shits I give about the name of a branch.

> Not that it really matters either way

But you still decided to make it your personal battle to make a comment remind people that the evil inclusive people did a no no by forcing you to rename your branches from master to main, yes.

>pays to be accurate.

No, it doesn't. Source: you knew exactly what I was talking about when I said main. You also would have known what I was talking about had I said trunk, master, develop or latest.

Re:The future of 32-bit support in the kernel on Monday September 01, 2025 @05:30PM (#45096798)
Nothing prevents you from maintaining nommu as a fork. The reality of things is, despite your feelings, people have to work on the kernel, daily, and there comes a point where your tinkering needs do not need to be supported in main. You can keep using old versions of the kernel, too.

Linux remains open source, extendable, and someone would most likely maintain these ripped out modules. Just not at the expense of the singular maintainer of the subsystem inside the kernel.

Don't get me wrong: I am not blaming anyone for liking alcohol, I have plenty of wine and various liquors, and it's a fun indulgence.

There is no "used wisely" with alcohol. It is destructive from the first drop to the last. It is about one of the worst things you could put in your body. Alcohol gets a free pass because it's socially acceptable, but it is, objectively, dangerous, and every single doctor and research in the world agrees with that.

Re:Isolated(any) on Monday September 01, 2025 @04:56PM (#45096531)
And thus grows the ever increasing list of reserved keywords in Swift. All for a badly designed feature. Along with another pile of crap on top, approachable concurrency, that will still work weirdly and be prone to so many bugs and impossible to understand behaviours.

Swift's insistence on having NIH syndrome made them ignore all proper concurrency management systems of the past fifteen years. What's that, structured concurrency, Erlang's lightweight processes, Project Loom, goroutines? all better concurrency systems than anything Apple has ever put forward, all publicly available in the form of implementation or research paper years before.

It's written like this because making a circular, infinite list that repeats and recycles the same few components is awful to write, and "(0..60).times(50).flatten()" solves 99% of the problems with 1% of the effort.

Product would probably raise this as a blocker after QA managed to scroll to the end. Who cares.

Re:Can You Develop Film in a Jägerbomb? on Monday September 01, 2025 @04:24PM (#45096320)
The absolute lack of self awareness, putting the danger on the energy drinks when Jägermeister contains something infinitely more dangerous than anything Red bull will ever put into their drinks.

Did you forget that alcohol is a drug, and a dangerous and destructive one at that?
