Not at all, it's structural problem. I've seen this in LA as well and it's the number one reason I left. Since I lack the personal capacity to fix LA, I no longer live there.
If anything if you live in a city or a nation where unemployment is rampant , you just need to leave. Not worry about what the government is going to do to fix it.
The weird transpilation system constantly breaks. I guess maybe one day they'll be better tooling around this, but it's not there yet. And I've worked with node in some capacity since 2013, things always feel fragmented and broken
I do think Dart is the best of both worlds though. Having real types, not hacked together typescript stuff is very good. That's the other thing the nodejs ecosystem feels like a bunch of duct tape slap together again and again
I'd actually argue you shouldn't offer anything for free, but instead charge whatever makes sense factoring in you're going to have to support customers even if it was a free product. For example if your offering website uptime monitoring, but it's not accurate that can cause a real cost to me
The unions just lost a major fight to try and get into Amazon's warehouses, they have every interest in disparaging Amazon.
Much wrong has been done in this country by telling people their behavior is a moral. As long as you don't hurt me or anyone else do whatever you want, you're free to drink yourself silly every night
I hate these moralizing articles, if we have a drunk driving problem then write an article about that. But if people want to drink in their own homes let them be.
I think the eviction moratorium wasn't thought out very well. You can't just stop evictions while not compensating landlords, and not developing clear plans for what happens when the moratorium ends. No one is going to catch up on their rent of their behind. What I suspect will largely happen is many landlords will forgo a formal eviction as long as the tenants decide to leave voluntarily. Then those tenants will effectively swap houses with someone else who's behind, wiping the rental debt clean. You only understand this if you've gone through an eviction, but the vast majority of the time the landlord just want you to leave. If you vacate before you actually get to court you can often avoid having the eviction on your record.
Once I went to car free I got rid of about 25,000 in credit card debt in 6 months or so. Much of why so many Americans are so desperately poor has to do with car ownership. While it's possible to get Uncle Jimmy's Old Jeep running, most people just finance something. Once you make your car payment your insurance and gas, that's easily a third of your income. Compared to a $100 a month bus pass
It's stressful, expensive and dangerous. I'm really hoping work from home becomes a permanent thing.
The biggest problem with so much access to information, is it's simply impossible to absorb it all. You can read tweets from hundreds of people before you can get through the first chapter of Harry Potter.
I fear this has caused a permanent dumbing down of society
Don't let perfect become the enemy of good.
You can get an e paper hat for a raspberry pi zero and accomplish the same thing.
I hate the social media aspect of LinkedIn so much. I don't want to validate you , I don't think physical appearance was any role in the hiring process, but LinkedIn keeps telling me to upload a picture.
It's still the best way to find a job, but I try to avoid the social aspects.
I've long accepted no one cares about how I live my life. A friend of mine spends a ton of their good energy getting upset over the latest 'take' some influencer has. It's like getting upset over an episode of WWE Raw. In any case very very little of what other people do or believe has any direct affect on you.
However for anyone who has less than 10 years of experience, it's outright hostile. If you ask too many stupid questions in a row you just get banned. While I understand this is a very good quality control measure, unless someone's being racist or otherwise belligerent, a permanent ban is a bit harsh. I found much more help using the unity forums, and some parts of Reddit
Now I'm planning on traveling abroad and I'm realizing a lot of my junk is only holding me back. Seriously it's just stuff, you can go to a place called stuff Mart and buy more of it. But if you're thinking oh maybe I won't move after all because I'll have to buy more stuff you're cheating yourself
Ran out as soon as I could. In general it's worth remembering that if your overall team isn't performing well you still can be fired regardless of what your immediate manager thinks.
For better or worse I had a childhood which taught me not everyone's going to like me, but you just need to find people who do. In the case of employers I've left several places where I just didn't like the culture. It's worked extremely well for me.
Most successful people tend to be a bit above that.
I enjoy HN since the discourse here tends to be fairly intelligent. I've already gained a great deal of very valuable information from this site
For example if I wanted to make a 3D platformer in unity, I could probably commission an artist to create the character, download a starter kit of some sort, and be done with it in about a week.
However this means I'm tying in so much code, and if anything doesn't work exactly the way I expect it I can complain. I might complain about the starter kit I purchased, I might complain about Unity crashing when the real reason for the crashes are my own crappy code.
Particularly when I was younger, I would often try to do way too much at once and this leads to frustration. But, theoretically you could create the next gears of war with three other people in about a year. Odds are you're going to run into tons of problems though just because it's so hard to do that
If I could, I'd pay Google 50$ a month directly to disable all of their advertising across all sites which use ad sense.
The next time I have a web dev job I'll buy this
You're merely chastising a few of my opinions. There's so much detachment from the rest of me.
In the early days of Facebook I actually screwed up a relationship as I was worried my first girlfriend would post the wrong thing on my wall, and oh no all my friends would see.
Hacker News isn't really a social media site since there's no concept of followers or friends here.
If in any case you decide to go through my post history to make fun of me, I can just create a new handle. I can do this without even adding an email address.
I stopped begging for approval from the masses, I stopped going to Reddit to get "advice" from people who only seek to chastise me.
Of course you would need to navigate international copyright law, but I could definitely see a market for this
