Re:Methods for Random Gradients on Monday September 07, 2026 @04:01PM (#49602357)
Creating the gradients first with clever hacks and then with AI prompts made me a bit sad. The end results are beautiful but I feel something was lost.
Re:Want your images back? Sure... That'll be $5! on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @04:01PM (#48576021)
Photobucket has sent me the “do you want to keep your old photos?” email every three days or so, from 8/2023 onwards.

Some of the emails specifically mention that there’s 35 photos, so at least mine’s not empty.

I’d assume that at some point the emails must cost more than $5?

Could you link to it? I couldn’t find it on your site.
I don’t think people who play a lot use the AR mode when catching Pokémon. It’s easier without it, and saves some battery. But I could be mistaken.
Re:Southwest Headquarters Tour on Monday May 04, 2026 @06:04AM (#48006610)
I find it fascinating how with flight attendants there’s such a gap between what your everyday work is and what you need to know. Like every flight is just normal, but then once a career you might find yourself in a plane that’s now upside down on the tarmac and need to evacuate it in one minute. And they manage to do that.
Re:EU Age Control: The trojan horse for digital IDs on Sunday April 26, 2026 @01:45PM (#47912228)
Yeah, the bigger chain stores already have most of this information. I don’t know if tying it to an actual ID would make much difference.
Re:A Tour of Oodi on Sunday April 12, 2026 @04:15PM (#47743979)
The article mentions it in passing, but Oodi is an important stop for parents with babies. The third floor is quite often packed with strollers.

Sure you can hang out in any cafe, but I find it valuable to have a place like Oodi that's free, easy to access, and built with kids in mind. When taking the kids on trips in Helsinki, we often visit Oodi to eat lunch, just because it's so easy. Or the whole trip might be just to visit Oodi, eat, and grab a couple books. Of course the central location helps a lot.

Re:Are We Idiocracy Yet? on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @08:51AM (#47674536)
Part of the joke is that the new Super Mario movie has been criticized for being overly violent. So it’s partly commenting on that discussion.

I think it’s useful to know, that all Onion jokes start with the headline, and the rest of the article is sometimes bit of filler.

Re:Death to Scroll Fade on Wednesday March 18, 2026 @03:10PM (#47430116)
That’s not why user scrolls up, or at least not the only reason. For example, reading this discussion I constantly scroll up and down to center the text on screen.

If the header only appears after scrolling up for a bit then it’s not so bad, but most implementations show the header after scrolling 1px up. That’s infuriating.

Re:New YC homepage on Saturday January 24, 2026 @05:29AM (#46742419)
The carousel is way too fast to be able to read the texts. I’ve made the same mistake as a developer when I already know each text by heart, but actual users can’t read them fast enough.
It’s mostly just WTF repeated over and over again
Re:Severe performance penalty found in VSCode rendering loop on Monday October 27, 2025 @12:58AM (#45717544)
Adding a new data structure just for this feels like such an AI thing. I've added to our agents.md a rule to prefer using existing libraries and types, otherwise Gemini will just happily generate things like this.
Re:How to Motivate Yourself to Do a Thing You Don't Want to Do on Wednesday September 17, 2025 @01:34PM (#45278881)
Muscles don’t burn that much calories, only like 13 kcal/kg/day. So if I suddenly gained 10 kg of muscle, I could theoretically burn half a donut per day. Plus the extra calories spent moving those 10 kg of muscle around. But it’s not a free meal.

Re:Patrick Winston: How to Speak (2018) [video] on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @12:53AM (#45099281)
If you need to share the idea of the talk using just the slides then that’s a totally different problem. You shouldn’t make the slides worse for people who can attend the talk.
Do wolves have a light source or what are the antlers reflecting in this scenario?
Re:Passing planes and other whoosh sounds on Thursday April 17, 2025 @05:51AM (#43714747)
I think it’s some engine type that makes the sound at some specific speed / throttle setting. But I can’t remember the specifics. Some planes passing us make the sound, most don’t.
Re:Advice for a friend who wants to start a blog on Thursday January 30, 2025 @01:16PM (#42880472)
Well said. Sometimes I notice that I’m thinking about a thing for days or weeks and the only way to make it stop is to write a post about it.
Re:One Square Minesweeper on Wednesday October 23, 2024 @01:07AM (#41921993)
This is really hard. Anyone got any tips?
Re:Is the World Really Running Out of Sand? on Wednesday October 02, 2024 @01:12AM (#41717389)
My favorite example of this is trucks transporting Finnish bottled water to France and then bringing French bottled water back.
I think the point was that every new washing machine already does these things (measures how much detergent to use, checks when the water is clean enough etc.) without any AI. It’s not a very difficult problem domain.
Re:For the Colonel, It Was Finger-Lickin’ Bad (2016) on Saturday July 13, 2024 @02:17PM (#40955779)
Could someone copy and paste it here for us lowly EU folks?
Re:Donating Forks to the Dining Hall on Friday May 31, 2024 @07:18PM (#40541259)
I did a similar thing at a startup where I was working as a consultant. We would constantly run out of coffee cups so I started smuggling in more cups each day, some 50 in total. Luckily they were using cheap IKEA mugs so the total cost was roughly 100 €.

The problem could have been solved in many ways but it was a nice hobby for me. I ended up switching to work there as an employee and have been for ten years. I still use the mugs so it worked out OK.

Re:The day I canceled my Spotify subscription on Monday February 19, 2024 @02:04PM (#39433395)
I digitized the CDs I still had left a couple years ago. Over half of them were not on Spotify. And they weren’t even anything obscure, just electronica where licensing is often a bit complicated.
Re:Can Flow Batteries Finally Beat Lithium? on Monday December 25, 2023 @05:54AM (#38761556)
At least around here you open an app on your phone, select which pump you are on, and the total is charged from your debit card. The total time is just the time it takes to pump fuel to the car.
That’s me too. I disliked having podcasts in otherwise perfectly OK music app, and also Spotify’s efforts to rebrand ‘podcasts’ as something else than “mp3s on RSS”. But I was a paying customer for 10+ years so they had a good run.

Re:As an AI Language Model on Monday April 24, 2023 @05:54AM (#35685542)
A danish electronics store tried to generate translations using GPT: https://www.proshop.fi/?s=as+an+ai+model

"Sorry, as an AI language model, I cannot translate random letter and number combinations like "HD29HLVx" into Finnish or any other language."
