Re:Why use GraphQL, good and bad reasons on Friday August 24, 2018 @10:37AM (#17835163)
Does anyone know how GraphQL manages (or if it even can) to sort and filter across microservices? It seems impossible to me to do from any client. If you have a list view that is made up of data from microservice a, b, and c and you try to sort on a column from microservice b, how does microservice b know how to sort then data when there are additional constraints applied to data on other microservices such as a filter applied to microservice a. Does that make sense?

Basically I feel very frustrated when it comes to sorting and filtering across microservices, some people at work think that GraphQL will solve this and I have found absolutely nothing to support the claim that it would help us with this. Thoughts?

Re:A megathread on breaking away from Google on Tuesday May 22, 2018 @02:12PM (#17128120)
This is essentially just swapping out one perceived bad egg for other bad eggs. Microsoft is no better when it comes to privacy concerns.
Is the cache global?
Re:Why is setState asynchronous? on Thursday January 25, 2018 @12:12PM (#16232466)
JS is a mess because React is using a concept similar to double buffering to prevent bad rendering? That's all this is, they are batching updates to the DOM before reconciliation to reduce redraws.
States arguably also inhibited the path to gay marriage as well. You can't really know that one for sure.
Re:Amazon Seeks to Ease Ties with UPS on Thursday December 24, 2015 @12:08AM (#10787195)
I've been noticing the same thing with their third party couriers. They get a lot of complaints from people too. I complain every time, I look through the forums and see people complaining. They are essentially these shipping companies that formed purely to undercut UPS and work with Amazon. I wouldn't even be surprised if Amazon had some type of stake in these alt couriers that are coming out of nowhere. They all have horrible reviews and nobody likes them, but apparently Amazon sees this as acceptable because they are the biggest and the best and losing a few customers probably doesn't hurt them.
Re:Ask HN: Books you read in 2015? on Wednesday December 23, 2015 @12:31PM (#10784414)
Aha I get that way with the end of most books. I just power through the last 20 percent of it in one sitting. Must... have... closure...
Re:Human Brains Are Wired to Blame Rather Than Praise on Friday December 04, 2015 @10:16PM (#10680647)
I think 'wired' is the wrong word to use as it implies we're all kind of like that which isn't true. People who judge other people more harshly for their actions generally judge themselves pretty harshly too. The faults we see most in others are the faults we see in ourselves the most. If we were really wired this way than cognitive behavioral therapy wouldn't work, but I guess that depends on your definition of 'wired'. This is more a product of low self esteem than how we are 'wired'. I think the social conditions which are creating a society of low self esteem should be under a microscope instead.
Re:What Web Can Do Today on Sunday November 29, 2015 @10:32PM (#10647508)
> Unfortunately, most "web developers" have made the web worse over the past 10 years because simple, functional, minimal technology is not impressive, and hipsters love to show off

No it's because when I go into work someone says to make it a certain way and if I want to get paid I have to. If you want to blame anyone blame designers who see proof of concept stuff from developers and throw it in designs.

They won't extradite for student loans. For someone that far in debt, leaving is likely the best option for them. They can still be sued though and I'm not sure how that works exactly when you're in different countries.
Re:Show HN: Responsify.js on Friday November 27, 2015 @06:11PM (#10639265)
I don't think anyone has really wet themselves over this library. Your app is cool, but it doesn't solve anything for me. This library aims to solve a problem some developers have easily.
Re:Software Developers’ Growing Elitism Problem on Friday November 27, 2015 @12:14PM (#10638027)
I think people can write good code in PHP and JS and I think those standards for what is "good" have been elevated a lot in the past 5 years. PHP and JS still seem to carry this tarnished reputation with a lot of people and so many (especially in IRC) immediately discredit it with some hyperbole. Yeah both languages have their shortcomings, but there are so many patterns in place to use that can make the code well structured, perform well, maintain well, etc. If there is one thing that drives me up the wall a bit, it's people who go on sites like this one and internalize all the PHP and JS hate without hardly ever using them. By the time they have to at some point they already hate it so much that any part of the language that is "different" is now a negative quality.
Re:Mturk Tracker on Thursday November 12, 2015 @07:21PM (#10557182)
Pretty cool. I remember making my beer and weed money in college doing mturk assignments. For the most part its a total waste of time, but if you get one of the editorial/writing jobs where you write like product descriptions for foreign websites you can make about 5 bucks for 300 words.
Why is there always so much focus on the "F student turned inventor" trope. What purpose does it serve? It's definitely not the norm. I think that people identify with it because from their perspective it was like oh this guy was just naturally smart and he just didn't buy into the educational system which is why they had bad grades. Many people think the same of themselves in that way. The part that I feel always gets under reported or not digested by readers very well is the amount of work that the people usually had to put into their endeavors. Oftentimes the work was far more intensive than any education they could have received. I think the emphasis should always be on the work instead of what their grades were in high school or college. I guess that headline wouldn't sell though.

Re:Online Cheating Site AshleyMadison Hacked on Monday July 20, 2015 @11:11AM (#9916556)
Because it encourages the behavior and even makes it seem socially acceptable to some degree when it isn't.
Re:Online Cheating Site AshleyMadison Hacked on Monday July 20, 2015 @11:10AM (#9916545)
Yes, but we shouldn't encourage it.

Good. I hope the company goes bankrupt. People murder other people and kill themselves over shit like this.

Re:Is It Bedtime for Benzodiazepines? on Tuesday June 09, 2015 @06:30PM (#9688928)
Lots of fear mongering (I'm assuming in this article). I suffer from bad panic attacks, but I also have a history of drug abuse so benzo's are basically not an option for me except in extreme cases. I tried buspirone instead and it works great for panic attacks. However, I've never once had a doctor who didn't lecture me for at least 20 minutes on the dangers of benzos whenever I brought it up for anxiety. I think these people are going to "special" doctors. We have a lot of them in seedier nearby areas where you can get anything you want prescribed to you within reason. Maybe these are the places they are referring to? It just seems weird that any doctor would be downplaying the side effects and dangers of benzos.
Your education in school has nothing to do with your efficacy as a software developer or engineer. There are so many other variables that have nothing to do with how much you know or how fast you are. Soft skills are way more important.
Re:Google Ends Page Speed Service on Wednesday May 06, 2015 @01:07PM (#9500117)
It wasn't a very good measure of page speed anyways. For example the Microsoft dev site scores 83/100 and loads faster than any site I've ever seen before.
