Re:How we wrote our app for MS Office 2013 on Thursday March 28, 2013 @03:00PM (#5456939)
Microsoft's Development Center has a lot of good information on building apps as well as documentation on all the APIs.

The Apps for Office API seems to be fairly limited right now to reading from a document and inserting text and images. For insertion, you can only insert data at the cursor point or replace currently selected text. There aren't yet options to move the cursor or insert more advanced document objects. (Although, the Outlook Mail apps are an entirely different story) I think the typical use cases that work well with this API are easier information retrieval while working on a document and inserting images or passages of text.

Excel supports task pane and content apps. So for a task pane app like this, it would be possible to make the same app work in both Word and Excel by modifying the "Capabilities" part o the manifest file. All that needs to be added is the following tag: <Capability Name="Workbook"/>

If the user experience is appropriate, then apps typically work very well in both Word and Excel without any changes to the application code.

In college, we had a few weeks of Humans v. Zombies with nerf guns. Those games are so fun.
Re:Group of Men Have Played Game of Tag for 23 Years on Monday February 04, 2013 @03:51PM (#5167029)
This is adorable. It always makes my day to read about the creative things people do with friends.

Way better than a simple "Oops, page not found, blah, blah, blah"

This looks like fun. I'm totally cool with them having my data. Just give me pretty graphs. :)
Re:When and Why to Learn to Program on Wednesday January 23, 2013 @02:36PM (#5104820)
I had to ask seemingly "dumb" questions a lot when I started programming. I switched to software after having been a classical musician for many years and the transition in just learning a whole new world of vocabulary and how everything worked was pretty rough for about a year. Luckily, there were enough patient people to help me get through that and answer my questions. I wanted to learn to program pretty badly, I just didn't have the background to converse fluently right away.
Re:What If Cars Were Rented Like We Hire Programmers? on Wednesday January 16, 2013 @03:24PM (#5068852)
hehe, yeah, I've been through this several times.

I think it's funny when the recruiters try and lie at the beginning by saying a later interviewer may or may not be out sick and there is the possibility for some interviews to be cancelled and the day cut short. We all know they want to send you home if you screw up in the beginning. It's not a secret.

Re:Introducing Graph Search on Tuesday January 15, 2013 @06:26PM (#5063859)
Many users have already been adding random people for the social games that have been going for a few years now. Like Farmville or Sorority Life. I know several people who ended up talking to some of those random "game friends" and ended up befriending them in real life. Granted, it hasn't been incredibly common or straight-forward.
So many pretty things! I'm a huge fan of seeing what people can do with HTML5.
Oh this is cool! As a programmer and ex-musician, this definitely gets the wheels turning in my head. Thanks for sharing!
Re:Life ToDo on Friday January 11, 2013 @06:40PM (#5045689)
This article is a welcome reminder that I've been intending to do this. Somehow, I usually remember all the things I want to do around 2am and then forget them again by the morning. It would be nice to have a more frequent reminder. And I love using Google docs for things like this. Things to do, places I want to go, etc.
Re:An easy to follow design course for programmers on Friday January 11, 2013 @06:32PM (#5045659)
I can't get the page to load, but judging by the title, this is something I desperately need as a programmer with zero aesthetic talent.
There is no chance that I would pay Facebook a monthly fee. I love Facebook, but I would start using it differently or jump ship entirely if I suddenly had to start paying for it.
Re:Raspberry Pi Gets its Own App Store on Tuesday December 18, 2012 @01:03PM (#4938646)
Somehow, I totally managed to forget about these! Sad, as they would have made awesome Christmas presents for some of my geek friends.
Re:Become a pro web developer in 9 weeks on Thursday December 13, 2012 @03:45PM (#4917980)
Wow, that's fascinating. I occasionally tell some of my friends that it wouldn't hurt to pick up programming, but I never expect anyone to actually go do it. I like the idea of this school. They can learn a very marketable skill in a short (and intense) period of time and repent for their sins of majoring in something like comparative literature. (I'm just kidding, I love literature and I'm greatful there are people who understand it more than I do)
Re:Ask HN: What should I buy a "mentor" for a gift? on Thursday December 13, 2012 @03:31PM (#4917909)
Does he have a lot of little knick-knacks in his workspace? If so, you could get some sort of geeky toy, like a usb rocket launcher. If not, get something edible so he doesn't have another thing sitting around.
Re:Oxygen-Powered Jet Travels The World In 4 Hours on Thursday December 13, 2012 @12:59PM (#4917034)
If the load is lighter because the aircraft doesn't need to carry liquid oxygen, then does that mean it requires less fuel?

Or does oxygen-powered mean it requires no fuel?

I'm a bit confused by the brevity of the article...

Re: on Thursday December 13, 2012 @12:23PM (#4916794)
This is fantastic! This tool is actually perfect for someone like me who doesn't feel nearly as comfortable with front-end development. I always have to do a lot of playing around with HTML and CSS. Now I can finally give my F5 key a break.
Re:Dealing with Timezones in PHP and MySQL on Thursday December 13, 2012 @12:10PM (#4916692)
Thanks for posting. This is actually pretty critical to be aware of. I've seen problems come up a handful of times when developers weren't paying attention to timezones. The code was in one time zone and the database in another, so things got messed up really fast.
This is pretty awesome. It will make it so much easier to prepare for code reviews and be able to tell someone about how much time it will take to do one.
Re:Design Details of Google Maps for iOS on Thursday December 13, 2012 @11:15AM (#4916314)
kind of like Bauhaus style? I think that's where Metro was inspired from too
Re:Mona Lisa in 50 polygons, using a genetic algorithm (2008) on Wednesday December 12, 2012 @06:16PM (#4913059)

Mormons love to be asked this question
Re:Why founders shouldn't be the developers on Wednesday December 12, 2012 @05:58PM (#4912953)
How about finding a co-founder to handle those things, while you handle development and architecture?
For many of the backers, it seems to me like that's just the risk of investing in new products/companies. If they didn't receive the promised reward for their level of contribution, that seems like a problem though.
Re:Pound Dwolla: Tweet money to your friends with #dwolla on Wednesday December 12, 2012 @03:54PM (#4912405)
I'm assuming the receiving entity also has to have an account with dwolla, or is at least instructed to create one to receive their $?

Bats and pigs! It's like Contagion!

Re:Students helping students launch startups on Wednesday December 12, 2012 @02:43PM (#4912026)
This is pretty cool. I think it's a really good idea for a student to try and start at least one business before graduation. Whether or not it works out, it teaches them a lot about how many aspects are involved in a business besides whatever role they choose to focus on or are studying in school.
