Re:We Are the Last People Who Know How It Works on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @04:16PM (#48738602)
>To play a computer game in in the 1990s, you first had to understand how the computer worked.

As someone who played plenty of computer games as a teen in the 90s I assure you that I did not know how it worked. I learned how it worked later when I got a CS degree at university. Following the instructions from the booklet that came with the game may have helped me to get it working, but there was minimal understanding.

Re:Tidal AI Policy on Monday June 29, 2026 @10:10AM (#48719492)
I've encountered AI copies of songs from popular artists, hopefully this will stop or at least slow that down. I suspect the only reason those songs are uploaded is because people will accidentally listen to it and then the up loader gets the streaming revenue.
Re:The Cost of Owning a Home on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @12:21AM (#48289599)
If you're comfortable doing DIY a lot of equipment can be rented at your local Home Depot or similar store. I had a clogged sewer line and rented a drain snake for the afternoon. Much cheaper than calling the plumber.

The thing I won't do is roof work. Too scary.

Here's an interesting article by the photographer about fake AI generated macro photos: https://www.nickybay.com/ai-abuse-to-skirt-copyright-law/
I got the episode page for the podcast.
Re:Show HN: Micasa – track your house from the terminal on Thursday February 19, 2026 @04:50PM (#47080012)
That was exactly my first thought. Could I mod this use with boats. I already have some spreadsheets for tracking engine maintenance, etc, but this looks really cool.
This is basically the plot of the Bobiverse novels. They're a fun read.
Re:Hackers (1995) Animated Experience on Saturday February 07, 2026 @09:30AM (#46924181)
I've never seen Hackers. It was War Games for me, too.
Re:The long wait is over, Ganymede has arrived on Thursday December 04, 2025 @02:18PM (#46151594)
I recently put Endeavour with KDE on an old laptop (c. 2013). It runs great. Much snappier than it ever did with windows. Great distro.
Re:Gastronorm on Wednesday December 03, 2025 @08:45AM (#46134405)
There's an unexpected optical illusion in the size diagram. The 1/6 block appears narrower than the 1/9 block.
Re:Review of Anti-Aging Drugs on Sunday August 17, 2025 @04:48PM (#44934815)
I recently saw a patient with overwhelming MRSA sepsis with multiple foci of infection including epidural abscess (around the spinal cord), and meningitis. This person was taking rapamycin presumably for "life extension" purposes. Almost certainly the immunosuppression from the rapamycin made the infection much worse.

I'd be very wary of taking an immunosuppressive drug as an otherwise healthy person for theoretical life extension properties.

Re:GPT-5 on Thursday August 07, 2025 @10:50PM (#44832904)
Interesting. Yes, that's basically what I've been going for but none of my prompts ever gave a satisfactory response. Plus I noticed you just copy/pasted from my initial comment and it worked. Weird.

After my last post I was eventually able to get it to work by uploading an example image of Santa pulling the sleigh and telling it to use the image as an example, but I couldn't get it by text prompt alone. I guess I need to work on my prompt skills!

Re:GPT-5 on Thursday August 07, 2025 @10:32PM (#44832807)
So far GPT-5 has not been able to pass my personal "Turing test" which has been unsuccessful for the past several years starting through various versions of Dall-e up to the latest model. I want it to create an image of Santa Claus pulling the sleigh with a reindeer in the sleigh holding the reins, driving the sleigh. No matter how I modify the prompt it is still unable to create this image that my daughter requested a few years ago. This is an image that is easily imagined and drawn by a small child yet the most advanced AI models still can't produce it. I think this is a good example that these models are unable to "imagine" something that falls outside of the realm of it's training data.

I also misread it as Gnome editors and was briefly very confused when I started reading the article.
Re:I have tinnitus. I don't recommend it on Wednesday May 21, 2025 @09:42PM (#44057962)
I have had tinnitus for years, I suspect partly genetic and exacerbated by spending a lot of my 20s and 30s at loud concerts. But just recently I noticed I now have deafness to certain frequencies in one ear. I had an air leak a tire and realized I could hear the hiss of air escaping with one ear but not the other. Protect your ears, folks.
Re:Visiting – Epic on Tuesday April 22, 2025 @03:55PM (#43765649)
I've used multiple hospital EHR systems and, while it's not great, of the systems I've used Epic is the best of the bunch.
Re:A Reddit Bot Drove Me Insane on Sunday April 13, 2025 @08:40AM (#43672347)
A tortoise? What's that?
I also use it in cooking, add a spoonful to a soup or a stew and it really adds some great umami flavor. Marmite roasted potatoes are delicious, too.
As someone who both loves marmite and is currently learning Rust I was unable to resist clicking.
Re:Dead Internet (2023) on Tuesday October 01, 2024 @12:40PM (#41710812)
I doubt simply mentioning a forum on HN is going to lead to an influx of "noobs" who will descend upon them en masse. Those people are too wrapped up in their world of tiktok, Instagram, YouTube, etc.

Any in particular that you recommend?
Re:The creatives pushing nail art to sculptural new lengths on Tuesday August 20, 2024 @12:11PM (#41301329)
Same here. I was thinking expecting the nails you fasten things with. Fingernail art doesn't interest me much, but now it's got me thinking about what kind of cool art you could make with hammer and nails.
Re:I Put a Toaster in the Dishwasher on Wednesday August 14, 2024 @10:41PM (#41252692)
A while back on a whim I put my stainless steel coffee cup in the microwave and it just warmed the coffee. No sparks or drama. The metal didn't even get hot.
Re:Making 'food out of thin air' on Wednesday August 14, 2024 @02:44PM (#41249231)
By the title I was expecting to read about some process to synthesize carbohydrates by capturing CO2 and water out of the air. Which I guess is basically what plants do.
Very interesting, thanks for posting.
itis = inflammation

Infection can cause an itis, but not all itis is due to infection. Such as inflammatory arthritis (noninfectious) vs septic arthritis (infectious).

I moved to Linux (Manjaro KDE) as my primary desktop OS about 3 years ago and it's been great. I'm a casual gamer and all of my Steam games run good on Linux. I run Windows 10 in a VM that I use occasionally for work stuff using MS Remote Desktop.
Any source for the chatGPT claim? Typically (in the US) when doctors disagree with an insurance denial they have to do a "peer to peer" call, and plead their case with a doctor employed by the insurance company.
Re:Are Flying Cars Here? on Monday April 15, 2024 @10:29PM (#40047826)
Longer than that even. Here it is on the cover of Popular Mechanics in 1991:

I always popped out the silicone valve for that very reason. You would have to squeeze until the pressure overcame the resistance of the silicone valve then the ketchup would squirt out at high velocity. It was nearly impossible to get exactly the amount you wanted. With the valve removed it only takes a gentle squeeze.
